In the recent episode of “Dexter: Original Sin” titled “The Big Bad Body Problem,” viewers were left dumbfounded by an unexpected turn of events. Dexter, portrayed by Patrick Gibson, finds himself in a predicament when Tony Ferrer’s (Roberto Sanchez) severed arm surfaces in Alligator Alley. However, this case pales in comparison to a larger one that Miami Metro PD is grappling with.

After the kidnapping of a prominent city’s child, Captain Aaron Spencer’s (Patrick Dempsey) son has also gone missing under similar circumstances. Time is running out for the investigation, and recent findings hint that the kidnapper and possible murderer could be someone we least expected. It’s an unexpected suspect.

What Happened With Aaron Spencer’s Son in ‘Dexter: Original Sin’?

In the early installments of “Dexter: Original Sin“, we witness a narrative revolving around a young boy named Jimmy (portrayed by Brayden Gleave), who happens to be the son of a high-ranking judge. One fateful day, following school hours, he mysteriously vanishes. The captor keeps him confined in a gloomy underground cell and maintains a monotonous diet for him: Sunny Smiles boxed meals. This mysterious figure can only be glimpsed in a full black bodysuit, including a mask that obscures their face entirely.

After some days, I find myself in a chilling situation where I sever Jimmy’s finger using pruning shears and send it to the authorities, hoping they can confirm it’s his. As the probe unfolds, tragedy strikes – Jimmy’s lifeless body is found hanging from a bridge overpass several days later, painting a gruesome picture in one of the most harrowing scenes within this film series. The police speculate that this abduction and murder could be gang-related, possibly as retribution for a judge who may have been instrumental in putting one (or more) of their associates behind bars. However, solid evidence remains elusive, leaving us without any leads to pursue.

Shortly afterwards, Captain Aaron Spencer’s son, Nicky (also known as London Thatcher), is kidnapped in a similar manner. His mother gets unconscious during the abduction, only realizing her son’s disappearance when she regains consciousness. She is devastated upon discovering that Nicky is missing. Later on, Nicky is found in a room that resembles a dark basement, shackled just as Jimmy was earlier. He attempts to create a makeshift weapon by removing a metal object from a lamp and sharpening it on the floor. When the man tries to slide a Sunny Smiles meal through a slot in the door, Nicky demands that he comes personally to hand it over if he wants him to eat it.

In a different scenario, the man acts, while Nicky attempts to assault him, accidentally slicing the man’s wrist. However, he lacks the strength to overpower him. The man seizes Nicky’s arm, retrieves pruning shears, and amputates his finger instead. He then sends this evidence to the police, similar to what Jimmy had sent earlier. This raises concern because if the same perpetrator is responsible, it suggests that Nicky might not survive for long unless they can catch the killer in time. Understandably, Spencer is alarmed but maintains composure to let his team continue their investigation and apprehend this murderer before it’s too late.

How and Who Figures Out the Killer’s Possible Identity in ‘Original Sin’?

Following the delivery of the mysterious container holding a severed finger, Tanya (Sarah Michelle Gellar) along with her crew immediately set about searching for leads and verifying that it was indeed Nicky’s digit. In their investigation, Dexter (Patrick Gibson) detects a smear of blood on the box’s edge. It’s a bit of a stretch, but if the kidnapper got hurt during the abduction, this could be their blood. Tanya commends his sharp observation and instructs him to analyze the sample.

It’s been determined that the finger belongs to Nicky due to school records indicating his blood type. Tanya is hesitant to share the grisly details she uncovered with Spencer, but he presses her for them. She reveals that the cut was made using pruning shears, and by examining the blood, they can conclude that Nicky was still alive when this occurred. Later in the evening, once everyone has left, Dexter scrutinizes the finger more closely and notices something unusual: there seems to have been a moment of hesitation during the cut, which wasn’t present when Jimmy’s finger was severed. It appears that the killer paused before fully applying pressure on the shears to amputate the finger, suggesting a lack of certainty or indecision in the act. Unlike Jimmy’s clean cut, this one appeared more hasty and unrefined.

In the morning, Dexter locates Spencer at his desk, examining the results of a blood report. The findings indicate the same blood type, leading Spencer to appear disheartened as it seems the dropped blood was Nicky’s instead of the killer’s. Trying to console him, Dexter emphasizes that many individuals share the same blood type, so there is still a good chance the blood belonged to someone other than the perpetrator.

As a movie enthusiast, I’d put it this way: Delving deeper into the mystery, I’ve come across some intriguing insights about that abrupt cut. My hunch is that the kidnapper was either a greenhorn in the gang, unsure of his actions and not as comfortable as the one who cleanly sliced off Jimmy’s finger, or someone with a personal connection to Nicky. This potential bond might have caused them to pause before committing the act.

At the present moment, Dexter observes a bandage on Spencer’s wrist. Spencer jokes about it being the consequence of DIY air conditioner repair. However, Dexter is skeptical. When Spencer departs, Dexter takes a blood slide, questioning himself as to how he didn’t spot this earlier. Dexter intends to compare the blood sample with Spencer’s DNA, suspecting that there might be a match. Could Spencer have kidnapped his own son? And did he also kidnap Jimmy, sever his finger, and commit murder as well? The scene then shifts to a supermarket where a man in a suit is at the cashier buying two Sunny Smiles meals. The cashier looks them over and enquires if they’re any good. The camera focuses on the man, who turns out to be Spencer, stating that his son appears to enjoy them.

What Does This All Mean for ‘Dexter: Original Sin’?

Although not definitively proven, it seems highly probable that Spencer might have been involved in his son’s kidnapping, possibly even abducting Jimmy too. Is he a notorious serial killer, or did he simply resort to this desperate act to retaliate against his ex-wife Becca (Amanda Brooks), who had an affair and shattered their family? If Spencer is indeed the kidnapper and potential murderer, this revelation would have significant consequences for Miami Metro PD. It could account for why Spencer no longer works there by the time the story unfolds in Dexter. (Keep in mind that he might simply have retired, given his advanced age compared to others.)

In my perspective, it could shed light on another heart-wrenching reason why Harry Morgan (Christian Slater) contemplated taking his own life. Spencer wasn’t just a mentor; he was a cherished friend to me. He stood up for me in numerous situations. He even managed to save my job when my error led to the capture of Levi Reed (Jeff Daniel Phillips), who later turned out to be a serial killer. The realization that my dearest friend is a callous, heartless individual capable of hurting children would have been more than shattering.

Spencer continued to support both Dexter and Debra (Molly Brown) following Harry’s heart attack, even extending a warm reception to Dexter within Miami Metro PD. However, it appears that only Maria LaGuerta (portrayed by Christina Milian), one of the returning characters from the original series, seemed to sense that Spencer was acting strangely towards him, as she initially clashed with him throughout their interactions.

If Spencer manages to reach Dexter’s table when the vigilante killer admits his crimes, I can’t help but wonder if Harry will be there too, ready to voice his opinion. Could it be the very body Harry discovers Dexter dismembering that sparks him into action? With no word on a second season just yet, viewers are eagerly waiting for some answers before the current one concludes. Another critical thread left hanging is the grisly demise of Laura Moser (Brittany Allen), a fate we know from the original series will eventually come.

If Dexter kills Spencer and Harry witnesses it, it’s plausible that Slater won’t reappear in the show should it continue, except perhaps in flashbacks. This is because, in this series, we learn that Harry died when Dexter was 20 years old. Given that Dexter is also 20 in this narrative, Harry’s death is impending. It’s quite likely that Harry took his own life not just because he caught Dexter in the act of dismembering a body, but because he recognized the victim as someone he once cared for deeply.

As a dedicated movie enthusiast, I can’t help but ponder the intricacies of the Spencer storyline in Dexter. It’s quite possible that this narrative has been strategically crafted to deceive viewers, serving as a clever red herring. However, the evidence seems to suggest that Spencer possesses a sinister side, potentially making him the most chilling villain the show has ever seen. This plot twist also hints at Dexter overlooking a murderer who was right in front of him and raises questions about just how dark and mysterious Harry’s circle truly was.

And while I can’t guarantee it, I strongly recommend you dive into the latest season of Dexter: Original Sin on Paramount+. The suspense is unparalleled!
