is coming back to the franchise as the director of “The Hunt for Gollum”, but during a recent event at C2E2 2025, the actor surprised everyone by stepping onto the set once again, almost 25 years later, wearing the motion capture suit he used to bring Gollum to life in the original production.
According to Popverse, Serkis recounted his experience joining the set over four months into filming, sparking intrigue among the crew who were unsure about “the man with a bald head wearing a slim suit, uttering strange noises like ‘[Gollum sounds].'” In simpler terms, he shared that everyone was puzzled by this individual in a tight costume making peculiar Gollum-like noises.
For nearly four to five months prior to my arrival in New Zealand, this team had been shooting. During that time, I was engrossed in the preparations to play Gollum, often finding myself alone and crawling around, rehearsing, and working on various aspects of the role. And then the big day arrived.
The scenes for the movie were filmed out of sequence, and my initial scene was number 765 in film 3. As I crept onto set, I recall transforming into Gollum while wearing a tight lycra suit, then getting into character. Peter Jackson laughed at me, and the crew seemed puzzled, saying things like, “Who is this person, and what is he doing here? Please move him out of sight so we can shoot.” It’s possible that nobody fully understood my role on set during the very first day.
After capturing the scene, it was truly enchanting, yet it represented months of careful planning and waiting. It was amusing to observe Peter, who seemed like a child giggling before my eyes. This was because we were witnessing the transformation of a character, Gollum, but all that stood before us was a man with a bald head in a slim costume emitting the distinctive Gollum sounds.
Andy Serkis’ Return to Middle Earth Seems in Good Hands
Over 10 years have passed since Peter Jackson reintroduced Middle Earth to the silver screen through the trilogy of The Hobbit, and close to 25 years since The Lord of the Rings set new standards for filmmaking. Now, it’s surprising that a movie like The Hunt for Gollum is slated for cinema release in the near future.
As Andy Serkis prepares to direct and revisit his iconic character Gollum/Smeagol once more, Peter Jackson remains involved as an executive producer. Many original crew members will also return, including writers Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens. The intriguing question arising is whether any other actors from the original cast will resurface to reprise their roles in this upcoming film, as it feels virtually unimaginable for anyone else to step into the shoes of characters like Gandalf and Aragorn.
At present, no details about who will be in the cast have been shared, but several of the original actors have expressed their eagerness to revisit Middle Earth if given the opportunity. Rest assured, we’ll find out more eventually, although with the film not slated for release until 2027, “soon enough” might still mean a bit of a wait.
