The television show titled “Shifting Gears” starring Tim Allen and Kat Dennings, which airs on ABC, concluded its first season with a surprising turn of events that I didn’t anticipate at all. Although we have appreciated the series for evoking the classic sitcom vibe reminiscent of the 90s, this unexpected plot twist in the finale was quite unforeseen. In fact, I am glad that the outcome of the “kiss” scene didn’t follow my expectations.
The final episode of the season started by Matt, who is about to be Riley’s ex-husband, revealing he landed a job as the bassist for Foo Fighters, and expressed his desire to reunite their family. This left Riley grappling with whether to cancel the divorce and try again, or continue with what she has going on now.
As a passionate cinephile, I must admit, my heart skipped a beat when she finally made the decision I had longed for. However, there was another moment I had anticipated, which thankfully didn’t materialize. But before we delve into that, let me share with you an unexpected twist that left me utterly surprised.
Matt And Eve Kissed, And They Might Be A Romantic Item
At the end of Riley’s divorce celebration, Matt apologized to Eve in an indirect way for his excessive reaction over her scratching his car door. He accepted responsibility for the damages but didn’t express regret verbally. In a familiar pattern, Eve interpreted this silent apology as genuine even if it wasn’t spoken aloud. Later on, unexpectedly, she kissed Matt passionately, and though only the Shifting Gears audience witnessed this, Tim Allen’s character hinted before the closing credits that things escalated much more between them beyond just a kiss.
Just a while back, I admired the ABC sitcom for keeping Matt and Charlotte (portrayed by Nancy Travis from “Last Man Standing”) apart as a couple, which came as a relief. But now, it seems like Jenna Elfman’s character Eve might be heading towards a romance with Matt, a twist that I didn’t anticipate so soon. Frankly, I never thought this would happen this fast, but I’m thankful Jenna Elfman decided to answer when “Shifting Gears” reached out. I’m eagerly looking forward to seeing where this relationship could lead in future episodes, if the series gets renewed for Season 2.
I’m Glad Gabe Didn’t Kiss Riley When She Tried For It
I’ve consistently maintained that “Shifting Gears” stands out as an unexpected gem in the 2025 TV lineup, and the season finale’s twist on expectations only served to reinforce this belief. When “Gabe” suggested taking a tipsy “Riley” home following her divorce party, I had a strong feeling about where the story was headed. However, I was taken aback when Riley went in for a kiss and Gabe unexpectedly stepped back instead.

It would be better if we allowed their storyline some time to unfold organically, giving their relationship a chance to develop naturally. If Shifting Gears comes back for additional episodes on ABC, it could provide that opportunity.
