Recenty, “The Gorge” debuted on Apple TV+, and this romantic action movie focuses on two top-notch snipers who develop feelings for each other as they safeguard the world from an unknown danger lurking deep within the vast chasm beneath them. For a year, Levi (Miles Teller) and Drasa (Anya Taylor-Joy) are stationed in separate towers on opposite sides of the gorge, with no contact allowed between them. Levi stands watch on the western side while Drasa protects the eastern side. Their mission isn’t to keep people out; instead, they must ensure that nothing within the gorge manages to escape.

Following several months apart, the duo devise a method to reconnect despite a 600-meter chasm separating them. Their connection deepens into something profoundly affectionate, which is further strengthened when Levi sets up a zipline leading to Drasa’s side of the canyon. However, the next day, an explosion causes the line to break, sending Levi tumbling downwards. Without a moment’s hesitation, Drasa leaps into action and equips herself with her tactical gear to save him. She successfully rescues him, but their predicament now finds them stranded in the ominous depths of the canyon. This means they must face a nightmarish landscape filled with grotesque horrors known as the Hollow Men.

When Levi gets to the western tower, he encounters his forerunner, J.D. (Sope Dirisu), who fills him in on all the crucial details about the tower and the chasm beneath, including the eerie and grotesque Hollow Men. The Hollow Men, as named by the first inhabitant of the west tower, Bradford Shaw (James Marlowe), are a terrifying outcome from some faulty biochemical experiments that were contaminated after an immense earthquake within the chasm. However, Levi doesn’t discover this information from J.D. Instead, to J.D., the chasm was like a gateway to hell, and it was their duty to keep watch.

It’s not until Levi ventures into the ravine with Drasa that he uncovers the entire truth. Inside this pit, they face numerous fearsome creatures. What appears to be a deserted town greets them, with flags from America, Britain, and the Soviet Union fluttering weakly in the wind. They eventually stumble upon a laboratory, where they learn that towards the latter half of WWII, scientists were conducting similar experiments as those at Los Alamos, and the atomic bomb was their goal. Unfortunately, this international group met their tragic end due to an earthquake, which damaged all their facilities in the ravine.

After World War II, research initially focused on containment transformed into something entirely different. Following a catastrophic earthquake, human DNA intermingled with that of all life forms within the ravine – animals, plants, and insects alike. This tragic event turned the ravine into a desolate wasteland, inhabited by monstrous creatures born from this fusion. To add to the misery, three military units were dispatched to the ravine in the late 1940s but never returned. Eventually, they too succumbed to the ravine’s effects and became the Hollow Men, victims of their own environment.

Do Levi and Drasa Become Hollow Men in ‘The Gorge’?

Since the contaminated fog from the gorge affects anyone who enters it, those who do eventually succumb to its harmful influence. This was also true for Bradford Shaw, the first guard in the west tower, part of the three missing battalions after his service within the tower. Despite possessing intelligence and strategic thinking skills, he transformed into something sinister and terrifying. There’s no longer any way to control him because he is no longer the soldier he once was. Instead, he has become one of the Hollow Men, who are a manifestation of the horrific landscape within the gorge.

Instead of destroying the gorge completely, Levi and Drasa understand their mission is to prevent anything from escaping. This is because Bartholomew (Sigourney Weaver) and her corporation, Darklake, want to investigate the Hollow Men for potential use in creating genetically enhanced American soldiers who could outmatch any army globally. However, there’s concern that the mysterious horrors within the ominous chasm might not be controllable.

Anyone who spends a lot of time in the gorge will likely be changed by its terrifying experiences, unless their visit is brief. Fortunately, Levi and Drasa realize this and eventually manage to leave the gorge. Unlike Shaw, they do not transform into grotesque beings known as Hollow Men. They may still bear some scars from their ordeal, but they avoid becoming monstrous creatures. Now that they understand the truth about the gorge, they decide to take action to protect the world from its horrors forever. The Gorge is now available for streaming on Apple TV+.
