“Goonies never say die!”
As a devoted fan, I’ve always held onto the hope that more Goonies adventures could be on the horizon, even after 40 years since the initial movie was unleashed. And it seems my dreams might just come true! This year, Warner Bros. officially confirmed that a second Goonies film is in development, with the original masterminds Steven Spielberg and Chris Columbus returning as producers.
Unfortunately, we can’t bring the whole group back together as Director Richard Donner passed away in 2021. However, his wife, Lauren Schuler Donner, is still involved in the production. Sadly, Anne Ramsey (Mama Fratelli) and John Matuszak (Sloth) are no longer with us, having passed away in the late ’80s.
If we consider that the group from The Goonies might reunite (which appears probable), it could require a search as challenging as navigating a wet cave, passing a bottomless wishing well, an armed organ, and finally, the decayed ship of One-Eyed Willy the pirate. At journey’s end, there may be a treasure chest filled with gold and gems (or in this case, box office success). Here’s what the endearing group of underdogs has been doing since they last parted ways on Astoria’s coast back in 1985.
Sean Astin (Mikey Walsh)
Following an unforgettable portrayal as Mikey, the unofficial leader of the Goonies group, Astin went on to feature in movies such as “The War of the Roses” (1989), “Encino Man” (1992) and “Rudy” (1993). He also received an Oscar nomination for his directorial work alongside his wife, Christine, in the live-action short film “Kangaroo Court” (1994). These accomplishments were made before he achieved Hollywood immortality by playing Samwise Gamgee in Peter Jackson’s “Lord of the Rings” films, which culminated in the 2004 Academy Award winner for best picture, “Return of the King.
Instead of being satisfied with past achievements, this versatile actor, boasting almost 200 film and TV roles on his IMDb profile, lent his voice to Raphael in over a hundred episodes of the series “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” from 2012-2017. Lately, he’s made appearances on “Stranger Things” as Bob, Joyce Byers’ (Winona Ryder) boyfriend, provided voiceovers for several “Captain Underpants” TV series, and played Tyler, Becky’s boyfriend, on “The Conners”. Additionally, he joined forces with his “Goonies” co-star Ke Huy Quan in the 2025 film release “Love Hurts”.
Jeff Cohen (Lawrence “Chunk” Cohen)
Chunk’s character stood out significantly during Cohen’s film career. Afterward, he took on sporadic roles in shows like ABC Afterschool Specials, The Magical World of Disney, Family Ties, and a few others. However, his final screen appearance was in Disney’s 1991 TV movie Perfect Harmony. He openly admitted that he stopped receiving roles once he went through puberty and no longer had the “chubby child” look.
It’s fortunate that Cohen has other talents, such as being an entertainment lawyer. After studying business at UC Berkeley and obtaining his J.D. from UCLA School of Law, he co-founded Cohen Gardner LLP with Jonathan Gardner in 2002. As a lawyer, Cohen represents clients like Ke Huy Quan (whom he helped broker a deal for the hit movie Everything Everywhere All at Once) and Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh. In 2023, he was included on THR‘s Power Lawyers list, where he shared that Quan’s comeback didn’t inspire him to return to acting: “I’ll stick to my legal office,” he said, “I don’t have to audition and I still get to attend the parties.”
Ke Huy Quan (Richard “Data” Wang)
Following his successful debut as a child actor in Steven Spielberg’s “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom” (1984) under the stage name Jonathan Quan, which he continued to use for years, Quan experienced a largely unnoticed career in Hollywood. This period included roles as a stunt coordinator and assistant director, with notable appearances on the sitcom “Nothing Is Easy” (1986-87), where he played one of several adopted children, 27 episodes of “Head of the Class” (1990-91), and a reunion with Sean Astin in “Encino Man” (1992) as the president of the computer club. Behind the scenes, Quan worked as a stunt rigger on “X-Men” (2000), where he first met Kevin Feige, future head of Marvel Studios, and served as stunt coordinator for the short film “Enigma” (2009).
Quan’s career took a significant turn when he collaborated with the Daniels on an independent film titled “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” In this production, he portrayed Waymond Wang, the devoted spouse of Evelyn, played by Michelle Yeoh. This role catapulted him to fame during the 2023 awards season, culminating in his win for Best Supporting Actor at the Oscars. During his acceptance speech, he shared that his childhood was spent in a refugee camp, and this journey to the stage at the Academy Awards symbolized achieving the American dream for him. He also paid tribute to his lifelong “Goonies” companion, Jeff Cohen, and his wife, Echo, for always having faith in his success.
Following the resurgence of his popularity, Quan found himself cast in Disney+’s series “American Born Chinese” (once more alongside Yeoh) and “Loki” (depicting Ouroboros, whom he humorously referred to as “the Data variant from The Goonies”), lent his voice for Han in the upcoming “Kung Fu Panda 4” (2024), and is set to star in “Love Hurts” (2025) – a role that includes numerous stunts. This character is a hitman-turned-real-estate-agent who is compelled to re-enter the criminal life he believed he had abandoned.
Josh Brolin (Brandon “Brand” Walsh)
Josh Brolin, son of actor James Brolin known for “The Amityville Horror” and “Traffic”, initially played Brand, Mikey’s older brother, and later starred in the ’80s film “Thrashin'” (1986) about rival skateboarding gangs. Subsequently, he made appearances on television shows such as “21 Jump Street” (1987) and “Private Eye” (1987-88), and had a leading role in the series “The Young Riders” (1989-92) about the Pony Express, alongside Stephen Baldwin.
In the transition to cinema, Brolin found himself in a string of forgettable films until the late 2000s. This was followed by his appearance in Quentin Tarantino’s 2007 double feature, Grindhouse. Subsequently, he took on roles in the Coen brothers’ film, No Country for Old Men (2007), Oliver Stone’s W. (2008) where he played the 43rd president, and Milk (2008) opposite Sean Penn. He then collaborated with Stone again for Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps (2010), portrayed writer Roy Channing in Woody Allen’s You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger (2010), played outlaw Tom Chaney in True Grit (2010), a younger Agent K in the time-traveling Men in Black 3 (2012), among others.
Brolin’s fame grew significantly when he was chosen to play Thanos in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, debuting in Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) and Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), then becoming the main antagonist in Infinity War (2018) and Endgame (2019). He also took on roles as Cable in Deadpool 2 (2018), Matt Graver in Sicario (2015) and its sequel, Day of the Soldado (2018), and opposite George Clooney in Hail, Caesar! (2016). More recently, he portrayed Gurney Halleck in Dune: Part One (2021) and will reprise this role in Dune: Part Two (2024). Some of his upcoming roles include the mystery film Wake Up Dead Man within Knives Out series in 2025, as well as The Running Man and Zach Cregger’s horror movie Weapons.
Brolin has been married on three different occasions – firstly with Alice Adair from 1988 until 1992, then with Diane Lane from 2004 up to 2013, and currently he’s wedded to Kathryn Boyd Brolin.
Corey Feldman (Clark “Mouth” Devereaux)
Feldman portrayed the character Mouth in The Goonies, and went on to maintain a consistent career. His greatest recognition came during the 1980s. He is arguably best remembered for Stand by Me (1986), where he teamed up with Wil Wheaton, River Phoenix, and Jerry O’Connell as a gang of boys looking for a missing boy, and shared the screen with Corey Haim in Joel Schumacher’s The Lost Boys (1987).
The collaboration between Haim and the team turned into something more significant, leading to their friendship being known as “The Two Coreys.” They were even featured in a reality show called by the same name before Haim’s death from pneumonia in 2010. Unfortunately, both struggled with drug addiction, which had a negative impact on Feldman’s career. Additionally, Feldman was well-known for his friendship with Michael Jackson and stood up for him amidst child sexual abuse allegations. However, he has since retracted that support in more recent times.
Besides his television appearances, Feldman was part of the star-studded cast in the popular ’80s comedy “The ‘Burbs” (1989) featuring Tom Hanks and Carrie Fisher. In between these roles, he lent his voice to Donatello in the 1990 blockbuster “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,” which earned over $202 million globally on a budget of just $13.5 million. Additionally, he starred in “Meatballs 4” (1992). From 2004 to 2006, Feldman appeared in over 50 episodes of the animated series “Robot Monkey Team Hyperforce Go!”.
Beyond his acting career, Feldman is a musician in the band The Truth Movement and has been married thrice; his latest divorce was with Courtney Anne Mitchell in 2023. His appearance on Celebrity Wife Swap in 2015 stirred controversy, revealing aspects of his management company, Corey’s Angels. Later, some members of Corey’s Angels alleged that Feldman had abused and harassed them, causing him to be dismissed from SAG-AFTRA’s Sexual Harassment Committee in 2020.
Kerri Green (Andrea “Andy” Carmichael)
In a past role, Kerri Green portrayed Andy, the enthusiastic cheerleader with feelings for Brand. Notably, she shares an unintended kiss with Mikey in the shadows. Since her appearance in the 2012 movie “Complacent,” she has not been seen onscreen.
Following her role in “The Goonies”, she made appearances in various films including “Summer Rental” (1985) starring John Candy, and “Lucas” (1986), where she played the love interest of the title character alongside Corey Haim and Charlie Sheen. She later shared the screen with Sheen once more, along with Alan Ruck, in “Three for the Road” (1987) as a senator’s daughter. Her acting career also includes roles on television shows such as “In the Heat of the Night” (1990), “The Burden of Proof” (1992), “Mad About You” (1992), “ER” (2000) and “Law & Order: SVU” (2001). It’s said that she temporarily paused her acting career to attend Vassar College, and in 1999, she wrote and directed the film “Bellyfruit”, a story about teenage pregnancy.
Martha Plimpton (Stephanie “Stef” Steinbrenner)
Martha Carradine, Keith Carradine and Shelley Plimpton’s daughter, portrayed Andy’s close friend Stef in ‘The Goonies’. Following her role in ‘The Goonies’, she made an appearance in the 1986 film ‘The Mosquito Coast’, starring Harrison Ford, where she played Emily Spellgood, the child of a missionary. She later worked alongside River Phoenix, who had previously played Ford’s son in ‘The Mosquito Coast’, in ‘Running on Empty’ (1988). The two even dated during that time. In the same year, she featured in Woody Allen’s ‘Another Woman’ and Ron Howard’s ‘Parenthood’ (1989), which starred Steve Martin.
In the 1990s, she kept busy with acting roles in films such as “Stanley & Iris” (1990), “Samantha” (1991), and “The Beans of Egypt, Maine” (1994), where she took center stage. She also graced the stage, performing at Steppenwolf Theatre from 1998 to 2019, portraying Hedda Gabler in 2001. On Broadway, Plimpton has made numerous appearances and was nominated for three consecutive Tonys for her roles in “The Coast of Utopia” (2007), “Top Girls” (2008), and “Pal Joey” (2009).
In subsequent roles, Plimpton gained recognition for her performances in “Raising Hope” on Fox and was nominated for an Emmy in 2011. She clinched an Emmy the following year for her recurring character in “The Good Wife.” Later, she lent her voice to Yelena, the Northuldra leader, in “Frozen II” (2019). In the future, she portrayed Sen. Judith Holt in the miniseries “The Regime” with Kate Winslet (2024). Earlier in 2025, she appeared as Jane Torres in the Apple TV+ series “Prime Target,” a drama centered around Leo Woodall, a mathematician whose field of study puts his life at risk.
Beyond her acting career, Plimpton is also a vocalist and an advocate for reproductive rights. She currently has numerous ventures underway, with the miniseries “East of Eden,” scheduled to premiere on Netflix in 2026, being one of them.
