Eight long years since its BBC One debut, I, a devoted movie enthusiast, am thrilled to share that the gripping Tom Hardy series Taboo has been brought back to life for a second season! In March 2025, Hardy himself confirmed this delightful news, teasing tantalizing new plot points as we dive into the development of this captivating period drama. The historical fiction tale revolves around my character, James Delaney, an adventurous entrepreneur who returns to England after a lengthy sojourn in Africa, only to find profound shifts in the social and economic landscape.
Despite it being rare for a TV series to resume production seven years after its initial premiere, Tom Hardy continues to play an integral role in the second season of ‘Taboo’. Notably, Tom and his father, Chips Hardy, collaborated on the storyline for ‘Taboo’, which further increases Tom’s influence and control over the show’s direction. Although it may be some time before we see its return to our screens, let us all rekindle our excitement for ‘Taboo’ Season 2 by focusing on the essential details surrounding this anticipated comeback.
What Was ‘Taboo’ Season 1 About?
To fully appreciate Season 2 of the show “Taboo”, let’s take a moment to understand its initial season. Created by Steven Knight, who collaborated with Tom Hardy on the underappreciated film “Locke” and the popular British crime series “Peaky Blinders”, this period drama revolves around the character of James Keziah Delaney, played by Tom Hardy himself. This complex protagonist is an explorer, adventurer, and ruthless capitalist who returns to England to attend his father Horace’s (Edward Fox) funeral after a long absence.
Previously believed to be gone for good, James makes his reappearance following a ten-year stint in Africa, only to discover that he stands as the new owner of Nootka Sound – a piece of territory situated off the western shores of the United States. Despite the East India Company’s attempts to acquire Nootka Sound, James’ half-sister and potential romantic interest, Zilpha (portrayed by Oona Chaplin), remains steadfast, foreseeing that the land’s value will escalate once the War of 1812 concludes.
Tom Hardy Says ‘Taboo’ Season 2 is in Development
For Paramount+ subscribers aware, Tom Hardy graces the small screen in the British gangster series “MobLand.” During a promotional interview with LadBible, Hardy spoke about “Taboo” Season 2 and eased fans’ concerns by stating, “We are currently drafting that.” This announcement was made a month following an ambiguous Instagram post by Hardy, which many of his followers interpreted as a hint for “Taboo” Season 2.
A day after the initial statement, Hardy reaffirmed his commitment to fans, stating that Taboo would be released only when it’s fully prepared and not hurried to meet viewer expectations. This aligns with Knight’s conversation with Collider about Season 2, where the showrunner indicated that “six out of the eight episodes have already been scripted.
‘Taboo’ Remains a Personal Project for Hardy
For Hardy, the allure of Taboo is deeply rooted in collaborating on scripts with his father, a close and meaningful experience that emphasizes quality rather than volume. In an interview with MovieWeb, Hardy expressed:
“The attraction of Taboo lies in writing alongside my father, an experience that’s both intimate and personal. We prioritize quality over quantity.
Sure thing! “Taboo is an activity or project that’s special to me, my family, and Steven. We decided to dedicate time and effort to making it right.
Although I’ve dedicated the past seven years to Venom, other projects have required my attention, but my passion for it remains strong. When I find the right opportunity to devote adequate time, I will revisit it wholeheartedly. So it’s not a matter of if we’ll return to it, but when, and ensuring that it’s done correctly.
As a movie connoisseur, I found myself drawn to the durability that “Taboo” promises, echoed three times by its creator Tom Hardy, indicating his intent to create a TV series that stands the test of time. This show harks back to the era of scheduled viewing, where each episode was a highly anticipated event, rather than today’s binge-worthy programs filled with predictable filler that often get canceled prematurely, leaving viewers yearning for a complete narrative.
It’s essential that TV showrunners invest more effort into creating well-structured narratives throughout their shows, instead of rushing them for quicker releases. This focus on quality over speed would undoubtedly lead to a better viewing experience for audiences and streaming platforms alike.
‘Taboo’ Season 2 Plot, Cast & Release Date
Although specifics are still unclear, it appears that Taboo Season 2 will carry on James Delaney’s commercial ventures in London during the 19th century post-War of 1812. The first season ends with Delaney exacting a deadly revenge on East India Company Chair Stuart Strange (Jonathan Pryce) by positioning a bomb nearby. Simultaneously, Horace’s faithful servant, Brace (David Hayman), manages to break free and intends to disclose the East India Company’s underhanded business dealings with incriminating evidence.
In Season 1, Jonathan Pryce and Oona Chaplin will not make an appearance in Taboo Season 2, except possibly through flashbacks. Since Zilpha, played by Oona Chaplin, committed suicide by jumping into the River Thames, her character will not return. In Season 2, James Delaney must confront his half-sister and lover’s suicide after discovering this tragic news in the Season 1 finale, leaving him desolate.
Beyond this, it’s worth mentioning that Winter (Ruby-May Martinwood), the child of brothel owner Helga (Franka Potente), and East India Company employee Benjamin Wilton (Leo Bill) were both killed off in Taboo’s first season. Consequently, it’s uncertain if they will reappear in Taboo Season 2. Additionally, there is currently no definitive release date for when new episodes of the popular period TV series might become available.
Without disclosing any new cast members, it has been confirmed that Taboo Season 2 will follow the structure of Season 1 by providing eight captivating episodes. Characters such as Lorna (Jessie Buckley), Thorne (Jefferson Hall), Robert (Louis Ashbourne Serkis), Atticus (Stephen Graham), and others who survived from the previous season are anticipated to take center stage in the upcoming plot.
Taboo is available to stream on Peacock & Prime Video.
