You Won’t Believe What’s Coming to The Big Bang Theory’s Stuart Spinoff!

The ongoing series “Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage” maintains a strong presence at CBS, and the creators of “The Big Bang Theory”, Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady (with screenwriter Zak Penn), are venturing into unexplored territory with an upcoming spinoff titled “Stuart Fails to Save the Universe”. This new direction marks a significant shift for Lorre, as he has announced that the streaming series will heavily utilize computer-generated imagery (CGI) effects, allowing it to delve deeper into its sci-fi comedy influences.

In the case of The Big Bang Theory, most of the Computer-Generated Imagery (CGI) was employed primarily for the opening credits and scene transitions, rather than being woven into the lives and stories of the characters. As a result, Lorre and Prady have been diligently learning about this process while simultaneously writing scripts for the spin-off focusing on Stuart. Earlier in the year, Kevin Sussman and other cast members gathered for a photo shoot as part of this project. Recently at the Banff World Media Festival, Lorre shared with Variety their thoughts on this endeavor.

This project has an abundance of computer-generated imagery (CGI). For someone like me who’s spent their career in the industry, a major production would typically consist of just two people chatting on a couch over coffee! This is a different ballgame altogether. It aims to blend elements of science fiction and fantasy into a comedic setting. Frankly, I’m way out of my comfort zone, which was exactly what I hoped for – a challenge that tests my boundaries and offers me an opportunity to learn new skills as we progress.

I can’t help but feel a thrill at the prospect of what lies ahead when Stuart Fails to Save the Universe begins. I’m curious about how it will distinguish itself from the vibrant sitcom style of The Big Bang Theory, the subdued drama-comedy vibe of Young Sheldon, and the cozy color palette of Georgie and Mandy. Moreover, I’m eager to find out how the CGI effects will be incorporated in this upcoming show.

Will Stuart, as portrayed by Kevin Sussman, undergo a transformation reminiscent of Bugs Bunny, allowing him to magically produce carrots and oversized mallets from his extraordinarily deep pockets? Alternatively, might he engage in high-tech combat with Barry, played by John Ross Bowie, complete with explosions, damaged furnishings, and an abundance of destruction? Or could the digital effects be primarily used for enhancing background scenes?

For someone who firmly believes that conventional sitcoms will always endure, Chuck Lorre appears to be an unlikely candidate for experimenting with something far removed from his usual territory. However, having Zak Penn on the writing team might make it easier, given his background in crafting action-packed stories like “Free Guy,” “Ready Player One,” and “X2,” among others. The prospect of witnessing a genuine superhero scene is intriguing, particularly if it’s set within a comic book store. What an exciting turn of events!

As of now, HBO Max hasn’t confirmed the new project, which is still under development rather than being ready for the 2025 TV schedule. This potential project was first mentioned in 2023 when “G&M’s First Marriage” was in the works, and Lorre didn’t reveal any details until everything was set. It was then announced that Sussman would be reuniting with Bowie, Lauren Lapkus as Denise, and Brian Posehn as Bert.

For just $9.99 per month, HBO Max offers the exclusive streaming of “The Big Bang Theory” spinoff, among other content. Subscribe to their Ads plan, with three more tiers available after your initial subscription. Plus, prepay for a year and enjoy savings up to 20%. Check out this great deal here!

Currently, fans should continue to hold onto their optimism, as HBO Max’s decision-makers are encouraged to expedite the approval process for the series “Stuart Fails to Save the Universe“. If possible, it would be delightful if the production could commence immediately upon approval. Additionally, bringing Sara Gilbert back into the mix, given that “The Conners” has concluded, would add an extra layer of excitement to the show.
