Back then, I found myself stepping into Channing Tatum’s shoes for the G.I. Joe movie franchise. Side by side with Bruce Willis, who brought the original “Joe” to life, we starred in G.I. Joe: Retaliation – a sequel that, like its predecessor, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, didn’t quite win over critics or audiences. But fear not, longtime fans! While the films might have had their fair share of mixed reviews, they still managed to deliver some truly epic action sequences, particularly in Retaliation. And guess what? Both movies are now available for streaming at absolutely no cost!
As of April 1st, both “G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra” and “G.I. Joe: Retaliation” can be streamed for free (with advertisements) on Tubi. Fans of the series should note that the newest G.I. Joe film, “Snake Eyes,” released in 2021, is available on Netflix and does not tie into the earlier movies. In the original duology, “G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra” (starring Channing Tatum) and “G.I. Joe: Retaliation” (featuring Dwayne Johnson), there are continuity connections. Therefore, if you’d like to follow the storyline, it would be best to start with “The Rise of Cobra,” although many find “Retaliation” to be the superior film.
Introduced in 2009, “G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra” was helmed by director Stephen Sommers and featured Channing Tatum portraying Duke, Dennis Quaid as Hawk, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as Heavy Duty, Christopher Eccleston as Destro, Sienna Miller as The Baroness, Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Commander, Rachel Nichols as Scarlett, Ray Park as Snake Eyes, Said Taghmaoui as Breaker, Marlon Wayans as Ripcord, and Lee Byung-hun as Storm Shadow. Notably, the 2013 release “Retaliation” saw a shift in directorial duties with Jon M. Chu taking over. While his tenure didn’t sustain the franchise in the long run, his direction added an exhilarating element to the two-film series. The sequel also welcomed Dwayne Johnson, D.J. Cotrona, and Adrianne Palicki as the fresh leads.
The Future of ‘G.I. Joe’ Movies, Explained
Despite Snake Eyes not igniting a new film series in 2021, Paramount remained steadfast about the legendary character. In the finale of Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, it was disclosed that the G.I. Joe organization coexists with the alien robots in the same universe. It wasn’t long before they confirmed that the next live-action Transformers film would be a fusion with G.I. Joe. Information on the movie’s progress has been limited, but for now, it appears to be advancing smoothly.
It’s been said that Chris Hemsworth could potentially take the lead role in an upcoming cross-over film, an interesting twist given his recent voice work as Optimus Prime in the hit animated movie “Transformers One”. However, for this live-action project, he wouldn’t be the autobot Optimus Prime, but instead a character from the G.I. Joe team. At present, neither the storyline nor the cast have been officially announced by the studio. Initially, Steven Caple Jr., director of “Rise of the Beasts”, was slated to direct this new film, but there are rumors he might be working on “I Am Legend 2” instead, a movie featuring Will Smith and Michael B. Jordan.
