Translating video games into television or streaming can sometimes be tricky, as certain games necessitate prior playing experience, and others include mechanisms that aren’t easily adaptable to video format. However, there are some games that have been successfully transformed into animated series, offering an engaging watch for both players and non-players alike.
On this list, you’ll find numerous animations that originate from multiple games or belong to larger franchises. Some of them faithfully recount the original game’s story, while others offer unique interpretations. Regardless, all these adaptations make for enjoyable viewing experiences for both gamers and non-gamers alike.

‘The Legend of Zelda’ (1989)
In 1986, Japan first introduced the initial “Legend of Zelda” game, which later made its way to the US in 1987 on the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). Players took on the role of Link, embarking on a quest to find the Triforce of Wisdom fragments, battle Ganon, and rescue Princess Zelda. Since then, the game franchise has gained immense popularity, leading to numerous sequels, comics, and an animated adaptation.
So Bad, It’s Good
The initial item on our list is a topic likely to stir debate and stand out from the rest. It refers to the animated version of “The Legend of Zelda,” which debuted in 1989 as part of “The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!”. This animation isn’t typically considered great, but in a specific perspective, it can be quite poor. However, over the years, it has provided plenty of laughs and inspired numerous memes.
As a film enthusiast, I must caution that this series might not be suitable for young viewers. However, if you’re open to unexpected humor, grown-up audiences are in for a treat! (And if it doesn’t tickle your funny bone, well, let’s just say, “Apologies, Your Highness.”)
Intriguingly, a live-action adaptation of the legendary The Legend of Zelda is slated for release in 2030.

‘The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!’ (1989)
Moving on from “The Legend of Zelda”, we must also give credit to “The Super Mario Bros Super Show” based on its unique qualities. Like “The Legend of Zelda”, it might not be traditionally considered ‘good’, but it certainly makes an impact. Debuting in 1989, the show stands out due to its blend of animation and live-action. In this case, the wrestler Lou Albano portrayed Mario, while Danny Wells took on Luigi in the live segments. The animated parts then featured their voices as they worked together to safeguard Princess Toadstool’s kingdom from the malevolent King Koopa.
Game Similarities and Differences
The TV series drew considerable influence from Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) games “Super Mario Bros.” and “Super Mario Bros. 2,” incorporating their music and sound effects. However, it should be noted that while the overall theme was consistent, certain storylines and game mechanics were modified in the transition from game to show. These alterations ranged from minor adjustments in King Koopa’s appearance to more substantial changes in how power-ups like the Fire Flower impacted Mario’s abilities.
As for updates on a new animated series, there isn’t much to report at this time. However, fans are eagerly anticipating the upcoming sequel of the animated movie.

‘Danganronpa: The Animation’ (2013)
As Ultimate Lucky Student Makoto Naegi, I found myself ensnared within the walls of Hope’s Peak Academy, but that was just the beginning of my troubles. Before long, a peculiar teddy bear named Monokuma made itself known to me and announced that we were all participants in a deadly game: a game where one student would have to commit murder and the rest would need to employ our sleuthing abilities to unmask the perpetrator, or else face execution. Each installment of this grim spectacle centers around a fellow student attempting to take a life, while the rest of us scramble to decipher clues and solve the mystery before the wrongdoer escapes the Academy unscathed.
An Ultimate Anime
The adaptation of the game “Danganronpa” featured modifications that were sometimes successful and other times not. For instance, to fit within a shorter duration, the tempo was accelerated, possibly accounting for some plot shortcuts. Simultaneously, enhancements in animation enriched certain mysteries and character responses. It’s worth noting that the sequel to “Danganronpa: The Animation”, titled “Danganronpa 3: The End of Hope’s Peak High School”, is crucial for fully immersing oneself in the game’s overall experience.

‘Kirby: Right Back at Ya!’ (2001)
Back in 2001, I found myself deeply engrossed in a captivating animation titled “Kirby: Right Back at Ya!” which initially graced Japanese screens before making its way to the US the following year. The central figure of this series was a valiant Star Warrior named Kirby, who possessed an extraordinary ability – the power to ingest creatures and absorb their magical prowess. This unique skill allowed our hero, Kirby, to evade King Dedede’s monstrous minions and ultimately vanquish the ominous ruler of darkness, Nightmare.
While sharing many similarities with the games that inspired it, this series distinguished itself in several intriguing ways.
Anime-Only Additions
In the animated series “Kirby: Right Back at Ya!“, many characters were borrowed from games like “Kirby’s Dream Land 1-3, Kirby Super Star” and their spin-offs. However, these characters often had distinctly different personas compared to their game counterparts. Moreover, the show incorporated humor by parodying popular works such as “Jurassic Park, Psycho,” and “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone“. It also delved into various social issues, ranging from animal rights to global warming.
7
‘Mega Man’ (1994)
From 1994 to 1996, the series known as “Rockman USA” in Japan, also recognized as “Mega Man”, featured its titular character – a Japanese-American superhero collaborating with Dr. Light – as he defended humanity against the malicious Dr. Wily. Many of the show’s characters and storylines were influenced by the video game universe, resulting in an adaptation that continues to stand out as one of the finest. At its peak, it was ranked number one among children’s shows based on Nielsen ratings.
Other Adaptations
Although the initial TV show was considered the best, it wasn’t the sole Mega Man adaptation. Other adaptations like MegaMan NT Warrior and Mega Man: Fully Charged were also made. To this day, fans continue to cherish memories of the original series and hope that a live-action movie will be developed based on it.
6
‘Carmen Sandiego’ (2019)
In simpler terms, Carmen Sandiego (played by Gina Rodriguez) is an expert thief who specializes in catching other crooks across various continents. The animated series provides an account of how she came to be and follows similar storylines as previous adaptations. Throughout the show, Carmen collaborates with different companions to dismantle the evil V.I.L.E., all while avoiding the pursuing agents from A.C.M.E. Along her journey, she discovers more details about her heritage and past, acting as a contemporary version of Robin Hood by stealing from thieves and giving to those in need.
Who, Not Where
Although designed primarily for a younger audience, this educational series remains captivating for gamers as well. Instead of concentrating on locating Carmen like the game does, the series delves into exploring her identity, encouraging viewers to join in the quest to uncover who she truly is.
5
‘Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog’ (1993)
Regarding outstanding interpretations of Sonic, multiple candidates vie for the title of “best.” Each animation is worth your time, and the cinematic portrayals of Sonic are equally captivating. Yet, the original animated series stands out in our memories due to its humor, nostalgia, and meme-worthy moments. Featuring Sonic alongside his friends as they combat Dr. Robotnik, this show occasionally felt repetitive, but it never lost its charm for younger audiences who found it consistently amusing.
Where the Series Heads Next
In 2024, a new installment of the animated Sonic series, featuring Knuckles, was launched, shattering previous records. This show connects with the movie series, which has been making waves in the entertainment industry. Here’s hoping that this collaboration leads to more exciting Sonic animated series and serves as a stepping stone for other adaptations too.
4
‘The Cuphead Show!’ (2022)
In the enchanting land of Inkwell Isles, siblings Cuphead (Tru Valentino) and Mugman (Frank Todaro) embarked on a thrilling journey, aiming to resist the soul-stealing antics of the Devil (Luke Millington-Drake). The show’s visuals mirrored the games and were crafted in a 1930s-inspired art style. With an episodic narrative, it retained the essence of its characters while dramatically altering their environment.
Different Audience
One method to rephrase this in a natural and easy-to-understand manner is: The transition from video game to show brought about several significant alterations such as reduced boss encounters, a more approachable King Dice (portrayed by Wayne Brady), an expanded part for Elder Kettle (Joe Hanna), and a shift in the Devil’s objectives. This resulted in a more humorous, less ominous version. Though it remains entertaining for game enthusiasts, it might be more appropriate for a younger demographic.
3
‘Castlevania’ (2017)
In 2017, I found myself captivated by the series “Castlevania,” a television adaptation derived from Konami’s video game franchise. The story centers around Vlad Dracula Țepeș, a vampire whose wife was tragically slain under false charges of witchcraft. Driven by vengeance, Dracula, voiced skillfully by Graham McTavish, wreaked havoc. To thwart him, I joined forces with Trevor Belmont (Richard Armitage), a seasoned monster hunter, Adrian “Alucard” Țepeș (James Callis), Dracula’s son, and the powerful Speaker Sypha Belnades (Alejandra Reynoso).
Good and Bad Changes
In the series, various alterations were warmly received by fans, like the expulsion of the Belmont family from the Church and their increased struggle against Dracula. However, some modifications, such as Isaac’s revised background and the omission of Elisabetha, Dracula’s first spouse, didn’t sit too well with them. In summary, the series stands out for its improved character growth, thrilling action sequences, and compelling narrative, making it one of the finest video game adaptations around.
2
‘Arcane’ (2021)
In the television series Arcane, featuring characters Vi (portrayed by Hailee Steinfeld) and Jinx (Ella Purnell), a conflict arose between the inhabitants of Zaun and Piltover. This struggle, which delved into themes such as loss, power, and familial ties, garnered immense popularity not only among League of Legends gamers but also with viewers who were new to the game. Regrettably, the series concluded in 2024; however, fans can anticipate more exciting content in the upcoming spin-off series.
More Depth and Substance
The Arcane series expanded upon the game by introducing captivating layers, such as revealing Vi and Jinx are sisters, suggesting Vi and Caitlyn share a romantic relationship, revising the backstory of Hextech for the better, and introducing fresh characters like Silco. It’s speculated that these new characters might eventually become playable Champions in the game, offering fans more excitement to anticipate.
1
‘Pokémon’ (1998)
Encouraging spectators to strive for excellence and collect them all, there’s nothing quite like the Pokémon series. Our protagonist Ash Ketchum traversed through various adventures accompanied by Pikachu, fought gym leaders, and aimed to fill his Pokédex. Over multiple decades and numerous films, Pokémon stands as the epitome of a video game-based anime done perfectly. Many other animes have attempted to mimic its formula, but it remains unmatched in its greatness.
The Very Best
Among numerous animated versions that exist, the one that stands out is the initial series titled “Pokémon the Series“. It was filled with heartwarming episodes, introduced delightful new characters and exotic locales, not forgetting countless new Pokémon. Each episode was a journey waiting to unfold. Let’s hope future adaptations like “Pokémon Concierge” and the sequel “Pokemon: Horizons the Series” maintain this legacy. We’re also eagerly anticipating the upcoming “Detective Pikachu“, which promises to be a thrilling expansion for the franchise.
