Instead of what was anticipated, Everyday’s Hero Spider-Man is all set to commence production for a serialized Marvel Disney+ show. Marvel Studios is initiating 2025 with the unveiling of Everyday’s Hero Spider-Man, which will stream on Disney+ starting from Jan. 29, 2025. Initially planned as a precursor to the MCU titled Spider-Man: College Days, the series underwent modifications and was rebranded to take place in an alternate universe, providing the creators with more creative liberties.
According to Dana Vasquez-Eberhardt, the executive producer, on The Official Marvel Podcast, your favorite character, Spider-Man (also known as Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man), will carry a TV-G rating. This makes it suitable for all audiences, which is different from the usual TV-14 rating of most Marvel Disney+ series. Shows like Echo and Daredevil: Born Again are rated TV-MA, but I Am Groot, another Marvel series, also has a TV-G rating. However, I Am Groot is a collection of shorts rather than an episodic series like Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, making it the first TV-G-rated episode show on Disney+.
1997 marked the introduction of the television rating system during the run of “Spider-Man: The Animated Series” on Fox Kids. Since then, all subsequent Spider-Man animated shows have been rated TV-Y7. Thus, “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man” was the initial TV-G series based on the character, but this doesn’t necessarily mean it is more suitable for children than Disney Jr.’s “Spidey and His Amazing Friends.” The TV-G rating simply indicates that “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man” has a higher rating than any other Spider-Man series.
What Does This Mean for ‘Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man’
It’s worth mentioning that the term ‘TV-G’ signifies something different than a G-rated movie in certain aspects. Contrary to a G-rated film, which is the least restrictive rating a movie can have, indicating it is appropriate for all ages, TV carries lower ratings. A TV-G program, like a G-rated film, is suitable for all audiences but is not specifically tailored for children. It typically contains minimal or no violence, but may include mild language. Many educational programs fall under this category. Television has two more restrictive ratings below ‘TV-G’, namely ‘TV-Y’ and ‘TV-Y7’. ‘TV-Y’ is programming intended for young children. ‘TV-Y7’, similar to previous Spider-Man series, is the rating above that, meaning it is suitable for children aged seven and older, and may incorporate elements of fantasy violence.
The family-friendly rating of “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spiderman” means it’s accessible for all, inviting a broad audience to appreciate it. While older fans can certainly tune in, the show is particularly tailored for young children who are eager for a Spider-Man adventure. Each generation of kids should have their own take on Spider-Man, and this series provides that for today’s viewers. The 90s had “Spider-Man: The Animated Series”, the 2000s had “The Spectacular Spiderman”, and “Ultimate Spiderman” ruled the 2010s. Given the title of the series, a TV-G rating aligns more with its friendly nature than a TV-14 rating would.
