During the festive period, several streaming services received generous presents in terms of viewership, as YouTube, Netflix, and Amazon Prime Video all set or equaled their all-time highs in Nielsen’s regular survey measuring television usage.
The December rankings from our television ratings service, which take into account the final week of November as well, indicate that streaming services are currently at a record-breaking 43.3% of all TV viewing in the U.S., just slightly below the combined 46.2% for both broadcast (22.4%) and cable (23.8%) for the month.
Once again, YouTube led as the top standalone streaming service, accounting for 11.1% of overall TV viewing, an increase from 10.8% in previous rankings and a new record high. Netflix, with two popular NFL games during Christmas, maintained its all-time best of 8.5% (achieved in July 2023), and Amazon Prime Video garnered 4% due to its weekly NFL games, the movie release of “Red One,” and the initial episodes of its high-profile competition series “Beast Games.
During December, broadcast networks aired the four largest individual broadcasts for the season, including NFL Thanksgiving games on CBS, Fox, and NBC, as well as the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade (also on NBC). However, due to many regular shows taking a break during the holidays, there was a 18% decrease in drama viewing compared to the previous month. On cable networks, news viewership dropped by 27% after the presidential election.
According to Nielsen’s December survey, which runs from November 25th to December 29th because they gather data for entire weeks (Monday to Sunday), the last day of the week starting on November 25th, which was December 1st, is included in the December rankings. Below, you’ll find the ratings for platforms and individual streaming services.
