Zach Braff And Donald Faison May Not Have Won Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, But Their Titanic Door Debate Was Priceless

As a die-hard fan of both Scrubs and Titanic, I must say that episode of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire was pure gold! The banter between Zach Braff and Donald Faison over the infamous “Titanic door debate” had me rolling with laughter. Their back-and-forth was a delightful throwback to their on-screen chemistry from the Scrubs days, and it brought an exciting twist to the classic game show.

Spoilers ahead for the sixth episode of Who Wants To Be a Millionaire in the 2024 TV schedule.

A few weeks back, just like John Stamos and Dave Coulier did on “Who Wants To Be a Millionaire”, Zach Braff and Donald Faison from the show “Scrubs” came together to try and rack up some cash for their chosen charities. They’ve been working together on a “Scrubs” rewatch podcast, so they teamed up again, this time with Jimmy Kimmel as host. Although they didn’t quite make it to the $1 million, their hilarious perspectives on the everlasting Titanic door debate were truly golden.

The “Titanic” debate among fans over the years revolves around whether Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio) truly had to perish at the end of James Cameron’s famous movie, given that there appeared to be sufficient space on Rose’s (Kate Winslet) floatable door. Zach Braff and Donald Faison, who were participating in “Who Wants To be a Millionaire” for Midnight Mission and the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation respectively, touched upon this topic when they encountered the $32,000 question. The question was:

Following its sale at auction for more than $700k, Time magazine referred to a substantial piece of balsa wood as arguably the third most important character in which movie?

  • A. Cast Away
  • B. Brokeback Mountain
  • C. Die Hard
  • D. Titanic

Zach Braff had already correctly guessed the title of Titanic before Jimmy Kimmel even began listing the A-D options, making it clear that discussions about whether Cast Away, Brokeback Mountain, or Die Hard were possibilities weren’t really in question. Instead, the debate centered around a topic that has been hotly debated ever since the release of the film featuring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet in 1997: could Jack have fit on the door next to Rose and survived the sinking? Braff and his co-stars/friends weighed in on this longstanding question.

  • Braff: “When everyone debates whether there was room for Jack on the door ––”
  • Faison: “There was room for Jack on the door, bro.”
  • Braff: “But James Cameron has said ‘no, everyone who’s saying I was wrong. It was a matter of buoyancy.'”
  • Faison: “Bullcrap, because he’s hanging on the door the whole time like this [poses like Jack in Titanic] looking at her, man! And she threw him in the water! She threw him in the water!”
  • Braff: “I agree, but this has been tested. James Cameron did a whole special in a tank. I saw it.”

As a longtime fan of both Scrubs and Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, I eagerly anticipate the upcoming episode that will be available for streaming on Hulu. Having watched the show multiple times, I can attest to the fact that it’s more than worth a second (or third) viewing. One scene in particular stands out for me – the emotional and dramatic moment when Donald Faison strikes a pose to mimic Jack’s final moments before Rose made her fateful promise to “never let go” in the icy waters of the Atlantic Ocean. The irony of Rose ultimately letting go of Jack is not lost on me, given my own experiences with loss and the complexities of human relationships. I believe that this scene offers a powerful reminder of the impermanence of life and the importance of cherishing our connections with others while we still can.

In simpler terms, Kate Winslet expressed her views on the ongoing discussion about the movie ‘Titanic’, and director James Cameron elaborated that the door couldn’t have supported both Jack and Rose as it wasn’t intended to. He also acknowledged that Jack’s death was essential for the storyline, resembling the tragic love story of Romeo and Juliet. Indeed, without Jack’s tragic demise and the poignant music, ‘Titanic’ might not have captured hearts or sparked so much debate! In essence, some movies are designed to evoke powerful emotions rather than end on a happy note.

If Zach Braff and Donald Faison debating Jack’s fate put you in the mood for three hours of Titanic action, you can find the movie streaming with a Paramount+ subscription. If they instead put you in the mood for Scrubs, all nine seasons of the beloved sitcom can be found streaming with a Peacock Premium subscription and/or Hulu subscription.
