Zachary Quinto Was Asked About Whether There's A 'Cutoff' For Doing Star Trek 4, And I Love His Response

As a hardcore Star Trek fan who’s been following the saga since the original series first graced our screens (way back when I was still young enough to believe that Captain Kirk and Spock could be my friends), I must say I find myself both excited and apprehensive about the prospect of Star Trek 4. On one hand, I’ve grown with these characters, seen them evolve over the years, and can’t help but feel a strong attachment to their stories. On the other hand, I’ve also seen how Hollywood loves to milk franchises past their prime, and I fear that Star Trek 4 might become yet another example of this unfortunate trend.

Several new Star Trek ventures are in the pipeline, and indeed, the fourth Kelvin film is among them. However, fans have been less than enthused due to numerous delays throughout its development history. Even this year’s updates on its progress didn’t spark much excitement. To be fair, Chris Pine admitted he was puzzled by the news that it might be moving forward, which isn’t exactly a ringing endorsement. So, how does Zachary Quinto feel about it now? That’s an interesting question.

As Quinto, the gaming enthusiast and actor who’s set to grace our screens with the new NBC series “Brilliant Minds” on the 2024 TV schedule, I recently shared some thoughts with Variety about the potential timeline for Star Trek 4 featuring the Kelvin cast. When discussing whether there might be a deadline for its production, I hinted: Could it possibly be too late?

There’s no end date. The initial team worked on films for many years, even into their 50s and 60s. While the tales may change, I believe that anything can be achieved, and I think there’s nothing more rewarding for an artist than to revisit something after a period of time has elapsed, and develop a fresh connection with it from a completely new standpoint, offering a distinct viewpoint.

He’s completely right, and as any Star Trek fan will know, the story is never truly over for the characters. The fourth Kelvin movie can always happen, but it’ll be a matter of how the script adapts to find the Enterprise crew down the stretch. Quinto is only 47, and Leonard Nimoy was 55 when he did the fourth TOS movie, The Voyage Home.

This was surprising to hear.

It’s not really appropriate to draw such a comparison, since from 1979 to 1991, there was usually only a two to three year gap between each TOS film. However, Star Trek: Beyond, the third installment in the Kelvin timeline, just celebrated its eighth anniversary this past July. If production on a new movie were to begin today, we’d likely surpass the nine-year mark before it hits theaters.

Actors might be patient, yet it remains to be seen if Paramount is prepared to wait as long. In the meantime, Star Trek is making a comeback on streaming platforms with Star Trek: Section 31, and they are also working on a big-screen movie focusing on the origins of the Federation. If these movies resonate with audiences and become successes, what implications could this have for Star Trek 4?

There could be increased motivation for everyone to put in extra effort towards this collaborative film project, but there’s also a possibility that the studio might find other priorities due to the rising costs of an ensemble cast in 2024 compared to earlier times. Considering the expenses incurred during Beyond, I suspect it wasn’t a cheap production even then. As we approach the decision-making process, there will likely be debates about whether the cost of making this movie outweighs the potential audience interest it may generate.

As someone passionate about “Star Trek,” I’m eagerly anticipating the film no matter what, but for it to be a financial hit, it’ll need a broader audience beyond just die-hard fans. Simultaneously, the movie wouldn’t exist without its talented cast, so it’s reassuring to know that Chris Pine is willing to take on more roles, regardless of his age.

While we eagerly await Zachary Quinto’s return as Spock, viewers can catch him in the role of a doctor instead on NBC’s “Brilliant Minds” every Monday at 10:00 p.m. ET. Don’t miss out, it’s quite entertaining to see him in this new character!
