Zack Snyder Comments On The Russo Brothers Returning To Marvel For The Next Two Avengers Movies

As a long-time Marvel enthusiast with decades of comic book lore under my belt, I must say that the recent announcement at San Diego Comic-Con has me buzzing with excitement! The return of Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom and the Russo Brothers to helm the upcoming Avengers movies, titled “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars,” feels like a triumphant homecoming for these beloved creators.

As a long-time fan of Marvel Studios and their cinematic universe (MCU), I was absolutely thrilled to learn about the exciting news that emerged from San Diego Comic-Con this week. The revelation that Robert Downey Jr., who has played Iron Man so brilliantly, will don the villainous mantle of Doctor Doom in the upcoming movies Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, sent shockwaves through the Marvel community. I can’t help but feel a mix of anticipation and nostalgia, as Downey’s portrayal of Tony Stark has been an integral part of my cinematic journey within the MCU over the past decade.

Snyder, undeniably, played a pivotal role in shaping the DC Extended Universe, directing films like “Man of Steel”, “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” and an earlier version of “Justice League”. The extended cut of “Justice League” was released to Max subscribers in 2021. During a conversation about the director’s cuts of the upcoming “Rebel Moon” movies on Netflix, which will be available to subscribers on August 2, our own Sean O’Connell asked him about the Russos potentially returning for “Doomsday” and “Secret Wars”, and he expressed his thoughts on the matter.

As someone who has worked with countless teams throughout my career, I can confidently say that I believe these individuals are exceptional. Their work ethic and talent have truly impressed me, and I am certain they have a bright future ahead. With their skills and dedication, they have already accomplished great things together, and I am excited to see what amazing feats they will conquer next. They possess a unique blend of creativity, intelligence, and determination that sets them apart from others in the field. It’s evident that they are destined for success, and I think it’s time for them to take their talents to the next level by shaking things up a bit. Let’s challenge ourselves and push the boundaries of what we can achieve together!

As a long-time fan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), I find it fascinating to ponder the upcoming changes that the Russos will bring to the franchise after their groundbreaking work on Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame. Having been immersed in this world for years, these movies have left indelible marks on me as a viewer, so the prospect of more familiarity isn’t necessarily unwelcome.

Previously, Destin Daniel Cretton was set to direct “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty”, initially planned as the fifth Avengers movie. However, he left the project in November 2023. Subsequently, Marvel dismissed Jonathan Majors from his role as Kang the Conqueror. Now, Downey’s Doctor Doom has stepped into the lead antagonist role for these two films, with a group of unspecified Earth’s Mightiest Heroes reuniting. Additionally, “Doomsday” and “Secret Wars” will feature the Fantastic Four after their MCU introduction in “The Fantastic Four: First Steps”.

We’ll observe how Joe and Anthony Russo fare with “Avengers: Doomsday” on May 1, 2026, followed by “Avengers: Secret Wars” on May 7, 2027. Regarding Zack Snyder, while his next film hasn’t been disclosed yet, he’s been associated with “Planet of the Dead,” the sequel to his 2021 movie titled “Army of the Dead,” for several years now.
