Zack Snyder Reveals Which Of His Comic Book Movies Is His Favorite, And His Choice Is Solid

As a long-time admirer of Zack Snyder‘s cinematic universe, I wholeheartedly agree with his choice of “Watchmen” as his favorite superhero flick. The intricate attention to detail and seamless transition from comic book to screen was nothing short of remarkable. It’s a testament to Snyder’s dedication and skill that the movie has aged so gracefully, despite the absence of his infamous topless scene (a missed opportunity if there ever was one!).

Zack Snyder is a filmmaker known for his bold, imaginative vision, frequently applying it to grandiose ideas that extend beyond the ordinary. This creativity has been evident in several comic book adaptations, such as the initial DCEU installments, now available for streaming with a Max subscription. In a recent interview, Snyder was asked to pick his favorite superhero film among his works, and he made an impressive selection.

Fans often rate movies directed by Zack Snyder, particularly his DC films such as “Man of Steel” and “Batman v Superman”. Recently, he’s been occupied with the Rebel Moon series on Netflix, but is still well-known for translating comic book tales into live-action. In an interview with ComicBook, Snyder shared which project he feels most proud of, and that would be the “Watchmen” movie. To quote him directly:

As a gamer, I’d venture to say that among adaptations, Watchmen stands out for me as the smoothest transformation from comic book to film. The process was almost seamless, like diving into a world that felt so real and immersive, it could have been straight out of a game. It’s the adaptation that left me feeling most satisfied, making it my go-to example when discussing the art of bringing stories to life on the big screen.

A valid observation! It was indeed Zack Snyder’s debut with a comic book adaptation, and it demonstrated his meticulous approach to transforming written narratives into visual storytelling. Over time, the film has held up quite well, even the director’s cut version, despite the fact that Snyder’s intended topless scene didn’t make it to the final cut of the movie.

The film version of “Watchmen” closely followed the original comic book, with its narrative spanning multiple years. Several scenes mirror the comics’ panels remarkably, as director Zack Snyder largely adhered to the source material in crafting this blockbuster movie.

During the same interview, Snyder spoke about his tenure in the DCEU, a period that some fans may have thought could encompass his preferred comic book film. He likened them to “Watchmen,” explaining how he approached projects like Man of Steel with unique, self-generated ideas. In his own words:

To put it simply, while Man of Steel, Batman v Superman, and Justice League share their origins as comic book characters, my personal perspective might differ from the conventional view of a classic comic book movie. However, I can see why others might categorize them as such due to their source material. This is more of a reflection of my own preconceptions about comic book characters rather than an accurate representation of these particular films.

As a die-hard fan of Snyder’s take on DC Universe, I can’t help but hold onto hope that he might return to shape the future of these iconic characters. The release of the Snyder Cut has ignited a flame among us fans, urging DC to revive the SnyderVerse and grant the director his intended Justice League sequels. However, I must admit, there’s been no whispers from the studio suggesting they’re considering this move.

James Gunn and Peter Safran are creating a fresh DC universe with an initial set of projects dubbed “Gods and Monsters.” Therefore, if Snyder works on a film, it’s not probable that it will be connected to his original ideas for a Justice League trilogy.

Starting July 11th, 2025, the DC Universe will kick off with Superman! Until then, keep an eye on upcoming 2025 movie releases to schedule your cinema outings for next year.
