As a gamer with a deep-rooted love for cinema and a knack for spotting patterns, I can’t help but feel a sense of intrigue about Zack Snyder’s latest venture. After years of weaving tales filled with fantastical elements, it’s refreshing to see him taking on a project that’s grounded in reality – the high-stakes world of the LAPD.
After the debut of “Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire” towards the end of last year, Zack Snyder added to the 2024 film lineup by not only releasing “Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver” in April but also making his director’s cuts for both films accessible for Netflix subscribers in August. It remains uncertain if the “Rebel Moon” series will carry on, but for quite some time now, he has been tied to directing “Army of the Dead 2“, officially named “Planet of the Dead”. Yet, that’s not what Snyder will be focusing on as his next project following “Rebel Moon”.
Instead, the filmmaker is planning to direct and co-write a yet-unnamed movie for Netflix which centers around the Los Angeles Police Department. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Snyder is writing the script alongside Kurt Johnstad, who he has previously collaborated with on the “Rebel Moon” series and “300”. Although no specific plot details have been disclosed, this film is said to be set in a world of life-and-death stakes, focusing on an elite LAPD unit that faces relentless encounters with the harsh clash of law and morality.
This new project represents a significant turning point in Zack Snyder’s filmmaking journey. Up until now, all of the films he has directed have incorporated fantastical elements, such as Watchmen, Sucker Punch, and his work within the DC Extended Universe. However, unlike these movies, this upcoming LAPD movie will be based in reality. Interestingly, before making his directorial debut in 2004 with the Dawn of the Dead remake, Zack Snyder was under consideration to direct the 2003 film, S.W.A.T., a role that eventually went to Clark Johnson. In a statement to THR, Snyder spoke about his LAPD movie for Netflix:
A while back, Dan Lin (Netflix’s film chief) and I had a chat about our mutual passion for creating an engaging, emotional, and gripping narrative set within the intricate, dynamic, and enthralling milieu of the LAPD. This discussion left a lasting impression on me. Consequently, I’m thrilled to now be collaborating with Dan, along with my other talented colleagues at Netflix, in shaping this storyline.
