As a longtime follower of Zack Snyder’s work, I’ve seen my fair share of visually stunning yet narratively undercooked stories. From “Man of Steel” to “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” I’ve learned to appreciate the spectacle while accepting the storytelling flaws. With that in mind, I approach “Twilight of the Gods” with a mix of excitement and caution.
Once more, Zack Snyder is stirring up debate among critics with his latest animated project titled “Twilight of the Gods“. Rooted in Norse mythology, this series focuses on Sigrid (played by Sylvia Hoeks) as she embarks on a vengeful quest against Thor (Pilou Asbaek) and other deities from Asgard. Marking Snyder’s sixth collaboration with Netflix and his debut in the realm of animation, the show has critics divided over its quality, much like Snyder’s previous works.
The initial assessments for Twilight of the Gods are varied. Most critics have characterized the series as having its high and low points, while others have praised it as a masterfully crafted epic with an abundance of action and violence. Despite some criticisms about its storyline, which is seen as shallow compared to Snyder’s visual prowess, some reviewers have been highly complimentary. Steve Seigh from JoBlo expressed his admiration for the show, stating that it “is a brilliantly bloody masterpiece that hints at great things in the filmmaker’s animation endeavors,” and Daniel Kurland of Bloody Disgusting described it as an “Adrenaline-Pumping, Gory Spectacle.” This latter description gains clarity when remembering that the word “sex” was used to market the first trailer.
Yet, while many viewers may have enjoyed it, approximately twice as many critics seemed unimpressed with the series, finding it merely average. IGN gave the series a rating of 6 out of 10, with critic Isaiah Colbert arguing that “Twilight of the Gods” uses its mature content more to justify itself than to serve the story. Similarly, Angie Han from The Hollywood Reporter expressed a similar viewpoint, stating:
Visually speaking, it’s a breathtaking piece. However, when it comes to emotional engagement, it could use some improvement.
As a film aficionado, I’m thrilled to share that all episodes of “Twilight of the Gods” are now available on Netflix for streaming! While the Rotten Tomatoes score is yet to be announced, early reviews hint that the show might find itself around the midpoint with critics. However, given Zack Snyder’s track record and the fervor among his dedicated fanbase, I have no doubt that “Twilight of the Gods” will likely receive a warmer reception from audiences, as his first foray into animation is sure to bring out Snyder supporters in full force.
What Is Twilight of the Gods?
Drawing inspiration from the epic Nordic tale of Ragnarök, the cataclysmic battle marking the world’s demise and renewal, “Twilight of the Gods” sets the stage for an intense clash between Earth’s mortal armies and the Norse gods. Billed with the tagline “Blood. Sex. Dragons.” in its debut trailer, it seems that “Twilight of the Gods” delivers on every promise made.
Netflix offered a more detailed glimpse at their upcoming series during Geeked Week. The newly released trailer features Sigrid seeking Loki’s aid and mobilizing her forces for an impending conflict against Thor, Odin, the Valkyries, and various other Norse deities, as suggested by the official synopsis.
In the legendary realm where valor, conflict, and sorrow reign supreme, King Leif, a mortal monarch, owes his life on the battlefield to Sigrid, an indomitable warrior. Their bond deepens into love. On their wedding night, they face a fury unleashed by Thor, propelling them, along with a band of crusaders, onto a perilous quest for vengeance that defies odds and spares no mercy. This epic tale of love, loss, and retribution is a trek through the depths of Hell and beyond, traversing enchanting landscapes, brutal battlefields, and wars against divinities and demons.
