As an avid follower of Bollywood, I can’t help but empathize with Zayed Khan’s journey. The young actor, who started his career with a bang alongside Esha Deol and later shared the screen with the legendary Shah Rukh Khan in Main Hoon Na, seemed destined for stardom. However, it appears that multi-starrer films may have been his downfall.
First appearing on the big screen alongside Esha Deol in Chura Liyaa Hai Tumne, Zayed Khan found his major breakthrough playing a role in Farah Khan’s Main Hoon Na (2004), starring Shah Rukh Khan as the lead. Subsequently, he featured in numerous multi-starrer films such as Blue, Fight Club, Dus, among others. Regrettably, these movies failed to impress at the box office. In a recent interview, Zayed candidly discussed his career struggles and attributed them primarily to multi-starrer productions.
In a candid conversation with Zoom, Zayed Khan revealed the reasons behind his career setback, attributing it mainly to his involvement in multi-starrer films.
He shared that he underestimated his fame and didn’t pay heed to many who suggested focusing on solo-hero movies. Once you become popular in an industry, it’s crucial to prove you can carry a film alone. It’s a significant task. I was drawn towards big productions. I wasn’t brought up for artistic films. My passion lay in the action genre; large-scale action films often appealed more to me.
In further discussion, the actor mentioned that when multiple actors collaborate, it warrants larger budgets to produce such projects. He also acknowledged that he may have jumped into big-budget films too hastily. Reflecting on this, he expressed regret, stating, “I suppose I wish I had established my brand first. Not every film I took on was a surefire success. After all, who wouldn’t want to be part of ‘Blue’?”
Apart from disclosing other details, Zayed Khan mentioned that his father, the esteemed actor Sanjay Khan, often disagreed with the movie roles he chose. They frequently had heated discussions due to this difference in opinion.
During that very interview, I shared that I chose to distance myself from film projects and take a well-deserved rest. The reason being, the roles that were being presented to me were ones where I would be playing a supporting character, and I felt it was not the right fit for me at this stage of my career.
In his own words: Even though opportunities are still plentiful, he’s careful about what he accepts. He explained that when you’re at a critical point in your career, it doesn’t mean you should settle for less. Instead, he’s turned down roles where they wanted him to play second lead or a villain because he wasn’t ready to assume those characters yet.
Additionally, Zayed has acted in movies such as Speed, Om Shanti Om, Shaadi No. 1, Cash, Sharafat Gayi Tel Lene, among others.
