As an ardent admirer of the timeless beauty and trailblazing spirit that is Zeenat Aman, I find myself captivated by her tales of daring adventures and groundbreaking performances. Her story from the set of Hare Rama Hare Krishna, where she embraced the authenticity of her character to such an extent that she became ‘high as a kite,’ is nothing short of legendary.
Zeenat Aman, a shining star in Indian cinema, offered a unique perspective for the industry with her assertive and open-minded female characters. Back then, she was often referred to as a ‘bold actress’ due to her roles. In the 1971 musical drama Haré Rama Haré Krishna, she portrayed the character of a troubled Janice, who appeared to be under the influence of drugs. To add authenticity to her character and convey a stoned appearance, Zeenat Aman took deep drags from the chillums used by the hippies on set, which were brought in specifically for the song Dum Maro Dum.
In an entertaining throwback to when she was recording the song, actress Zeenat Aman shared on Instagram a photo of herself puffing from the iconic number. The veteran star revealed that during the filming of Hare Rama Hare Krishna in Kathmandu, her co-star, director, producer, and writer Dev Anand gathered a group of hippies off the streets to be part of the song Dum Maro Dum. To maintain authenticity in this scene and her character, she participated with enthusiasm by smoking multiple times from their chillum for take after take. By the end of the day’s shooting, she was quite high.
In her post, the actress from Bun Tikki continued by explaining that due to her condition, she couldn’t go back to her hotel, so some team members put her in a car and drove her to a scenic overlook instead. She then expressed, “In the crisp mountain air, I admired the majestic Himalayas and gradually calmed down from my agitated state.” She later discovered that her mother was enraged upon hearing about what happened on set. In fact, she scolded the senior crew members severely for permitting her daughter to use drugs! Fortunately, Zeenat managed to escape her mother’s anger.
