As a film enthusiast with a passion for both the art and the process behind it, I can wholeheartedly say that the Dune films are nothing short of breathtaking. The stunning visuals, intricate production design, and powerhouse performances make Dune the sci-fi franchise of this decade. However, I can’t help but empathize with Zendaya after hearing about her grueling experience filming Dune: Part 2.
In a recent interview, she opened up about the demanding physical toll that the production took on her, and shared a particularly harrowing moment when she suffered from heatstroke due to dehydration. Working in such extreme conditions is no joke, and I can’t help but admire Zendaya for pushing through and delivering an outstanding performance despite the challenges.
As someone who has never had the pleasure of donning a restrictive sci-fi costume myself, I can only imagine the discomfort that comes with it. But as she rightly pointed out, prioritizing hydration is crucial, even if it means taking frequent bathroom breaks and potentially inconveniencing the crew.
Despite the hardships, Zendaya seems to have had a great time on set, as evidenced by behind-the-scenes footage and her social media posts. I can only hope that she learned her lesson about hydration early on and took better care of herself during filming.
I’m looking forward to seeing Zendaya’s performance in Dune: Part 2, currently streaming with a Max subscription, as well as her latest film, Challengers, available with an Amazon Prime subscription. And as for my own future as a sci-fi actress, I guess I’ll just have to make sure I always keep a water bottle within arm’s reach!
P.S. – Who knew that not drinking enough water could lead to such dire consequences? I’m going to start carrying around a camel pack on set from now on…just in case!
The Dune films are undeniably captivating spectacles. With breathtaking cinematography, exceptional production design, and awe-inspiring performances, Dune stands as the most remarkable sci-fi series of this decade. However, their entertainment value doesn’t diminish the challenges that come with making them. For instance, Zendaya has disclosed the demanding nature of Dune: Part 2’s production on her body, and shares a specific incident that pushed her physical limits to the maximum.
In a recent chat with W Magazine, the celebrated actor shared insights into various on-set experiences she’s encountered and the unique demands each of Zendaya’s top films placed upon her as an actress. When it came to the film “Dune“, it demanded quite a bit due to the extended workdays and harsh weather conditions, which took a toll on her body in worrying ways. She discovered the significance of staying hydrated firsthand, particularly when laboring under intense heat. She narrated:
During our time in Jordan, the heat was intense and I frequently found myself wishing for nearby restrooms as we had to trek to various filming locations. With the need to take at least 10 minutes to break out of my costume to relieve myself, I became cautious about hydration on set. The thought of an accident in the suit was a genuine concern of mine. Unfortunately, one day I didn’t drink enough water and suffered from heatstroke, feeling quite unwell. In that instance, I called my mother from the bathroom floor, telling her I wasn’t feeling well. She inquired if I had consumed any water that day, to which I responded negatively. I thought I was being clever by skipping water, but it turns out you can’t do that on set, so I learned a valuable lesson about hydration.
I can certainly grasp her line of reasoning. The costumes used in sci-fi or action films are often intricate and limiting, and delays on set can be costly. Being the lead actor doesn’t exempt you from the need to consider the team. Taking frequent, extended bathroom breaks might seem inconvenient when everyone is sweltering and fatigued, but it’s important to remember that nobody wants an accident to happen during filming. However, forgoing hydration isn’t a solution. A hospital trip is far more troublesome and alarming than a quick bathroom break.
In essence, Zendaya didn’t appear frequently in the first Dune movie due to limited time on set. However, she plays a more significant role in the sequel, spending more days with Timothée Chalamet amidst sandy backdrops. Notably, the production of Dune: Part 2 was extensive, spanning over five months across locations like Italy, Jordan, and Abu Dhabi—much longer than usual filming periods. The extra effort certainly paid off, although it’s hoped that Zendaya learned the necessity of staying hydrated during those extended shooting days to avoid discomfort for the remainder of the production.
Despite some challenging circumstances, there were joyful moments during the filming of ‘Dune: Part 2’. Behind-the-scenes footage reveals Zendaya enjoying herself alongside her co-stars, and she even posted a beautiful sunset picture from the desert set on Instagram to keep fans updated. With the heatstroke incident behind her, she should feel better prepared for her next trip back to the desert for ‘Dune: Messiah’.
You have the opportunity to watch Zendaya’s acting in the upcoming movie “Dune: Part 2,” now available for streaming with a Max subscription, as well as the original “Dune.” For those who are enthusiasts of her work, they can also catch her in her newest release, “Challengers,” which is currently streaming on Amazon Prime.
