As a seasoned movie buff with a keen eye for behind-the-scenes drama and a deep appreciation for the stories that unfold both on and off the screen, I find myself deeply troubled by the recent revelations surrounding “It Ends With Us“. The allegations against RHYE frontman Mike Milosh and his past actions towards Alexa Nikolas are truly appalling, and it’s disheartening to see such a questionable figure associated with this film.
The controversy surrounding “It Ends With Us” persists, stemming this time from an unexpected quarter unrelated to the film itself. Previously a child actress, Alexa Nikolas, has publicly criticized the movie following her viewing, claiming that it employs a song from a band fronted by a man who is accused of abusing and grooming Nikolas when she was only 16 years old.
Previously known for her role in “Zoey 101”, the actress publicly criticized the release of the film on social media. She not only accused it of poor handling, specifically calling out Blake Lively, but also pointed out the use of music by an individual alleged to be an abuser. Nikolas claims that this person, who is now a singer, abused and manipulated her when she was 16 and he was 33. The actress emphasizes that this information about the abuse case is readily available online, as it has been documented in a public lawsuit, and expresses disappointment that the creators of “It Ends With Us” didn’t conduct thorough research before incorporating the music. Nikolas also mentioned RHYE, a Canadian electronic band led by Mike Milosh, who was once married to Nikolas. Milosh, the band’s leader, has been involved in a well-publicized case that made headlines.
Alexa Nikolas’ Lawsuit Is Well Documented
In the year 2021, Nikolas filed a lawsuit against her former husband Milosh, accusing him of inappropriately grooming her for sexual abuse when she was only 16. Nikolas claimed that she was coerced into marrying the musician in 2012, at age 19. The lawsuit depicts Milosh as a “musician who exploited the innocence of a teenage fan to manipulate and force her into enduring his repeated acts of sexual assault.”
During that period, Nikolas shared her accusations on Instagram, describing how she first connected with Milosh on MySpace when she was 16 years old. She claimed their online conversations became sexually suggestive, but they didn’t meet in person for another two years after Nikolas turned 18. The accusations of assault that Nikolas made have since been removed from Instagram, but they were highlighted in a Rolling Stone article. Later on, Milosh dismissed the allegations as “preposterous and unfounded claims.”
In simpler terms, Milosh took legal action against Nikolas’ lawyers, accusing their lawsuit of being baseless and groundless, referring to it as “unfounded.” This case was dismissed from court early in 2023 following an anti-SLAPP motion filed by Nikolas’ lawyers. An anti-SLAPP motion is a defense tactic used when a lawsuit aims to restrict the defendant’s freedom of speech.
2022 saw Nikolas abandoning her legal dispute, whereas Milosh continued pursuing his malicious prosecution claim following the actress’s withdrawal. The judge in Los Angeles dismissed the singer’s countersuit for damages, and despite Nikolas indicating plans to refile, no such activity has been observed up until now.
Nikolas is no stranger to speaking out against abuse. Although she is a YouTuber now, she began her life as a child actor, best known for playing Nicole Bristow on Nickelodeon’s Zoey 101. Nikolas ultimately retired from acting and founded a movement called Eat Predators, whose primary goal is to end predatory behavior in the entertainment industry and point to unsafe working environments for children in that field, particularly protecting kids from child predators at Nickelodeon. The actress was featured in the Investigation Discovery documentary Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV, where she spoke about her time at Nickelodeon and her interactions with Dan Schneider, a producer and showrunner on various Nickelodeon series who allegedly fostered a toxic and unsafe work environment for children and young adults on his shows.
Ever since its debut, It Ends With Us has been mired in off-screen controversies. Tensions between lead actress Blake Lively and director-co-star Justin Baldoni, along with the media resurfacing past interviews of Lively to tarnish her image amidst the turmoil, have swirled around the film like a tempest. Despite this tumultuous publicity, the movie has continued to captivate audiences. This week it surpassed $100 million at the domestic box office and has amassed over $180 million worldwide on a production budget of just $25 million.
