As a dedicated fan and long-time user of Netflix, I find it hard to believe that around 4% of Americans have never heard of this streaming giant. Netflix has been a part of my life for over a decade now, and its evolution from a DVD rental service to a global multimedia powerhouse is nothing short of incredible.


I can’t believe it, but there are still Americans out there who haven’t heard of Netflix! This streaming giant has taken over the way we consume movies and TV shows, just like Google rules the internet. But let me take you back to the early days: Netflix started as a DVD subscription service in 1997, similar to Blockbuster and other video rental stores we used to know. Fast forward to 2007, and Netflix transformed into a streaming platform. And get this – they began producing their own original content all the way back in 2012 with the drama “Lilyhammer”!

Approximately 4% of the 1,000 American adults interviewed in a recent survey by Wedbush Securities, as reported by IndieWire, have never used of or heard about Netflix. This number represents an increase from the 2% who expressed ignorance of the streaming giant during Wedbush’s Q4 study conducted at the end of 2023.

The research provided information not only about the typical number of Netflix users but also revealed that approximately 57% of surveyed individuals are presently subscribed to the platform, representing a 3% drop compared to the previous quarter’s findings. However, financial analysts anticipate the announcement of an increase in around 1.1 million new paid members when Netflix discloses its second-quarter earnings on July 18.

For the past 25 years, Netflix has consistently advanced the at-home cinema industry. Every week, new Netflix originals are unveiled, adding to their vast collection. What began as a DVD mailing service has blossomed into a media powerhouse, now producing YouTube content, TV series, films, and even video games for distribution through its platform. Additionally, Netflix hosts various fan events such as Netflix Geekd Weekend. However, is Netflix truly the most frequently used streaming service today?

The answer is a definitive yes based on Exploding Topics’ analysis. In 2024, Netflix boasted over 260 million paid subscriptions, though it’s important to note that one account may be shared among multiple users.

Disney+, introduced in 2019, ranks as the second most subscribed platform with approximately 157 million users, trailing behind Netflix. Prime Video, available since 2011, claims third place with more than 117 million members. Notably, Netflix, which leads this category, is the priciest option among these major competitors, charging an average of $15.49 per month for its services.

Netflix invests a significant amount of its earnings back into creating original content for the streaming service. Initially focusing on independent, lower-budget films and series, Netflix has since expanded to high-budget productions, including blockbuster movies and expensive shows.

“The Grey Man” (directed by Joe and Anthony Russo), featuring performances from Ryan Gosling, Chris Evans, and Rege-Jean Page, holds the record as Netflix’s costliest production to date, boasting an approximated budget of $200 million.
