10 Best Action Movie Remakes, Ranked

As a longtime horror movie enthusiast and someone who grew up with George Romero’s “Dawn of the Dead” (1978) being a staple in my film education, I was initially skeptical about a remake. However, having watched both versions, I can confidently say that Zack Snyder and James Gunn’s “Dawn of the Dead” (2004) is an impressive and unique take on this horror classic.

Reinterpretations of prior films are a debated topic among film enthusiasts. Some believe that updating classics is unnecessary and disrespectful, merely an attempt to cash in on nostalgia for established properties. however, a select number of remakes surpass their predecessors or pay tribute to them in a meaningful way. In the realm of action movies, the challenge becomes more intricate due to the genre’s continual evolution and innovative methods for portraying car chases, gun battles, and various fights.

Ten revamped versions might not surpass their predecessors in every aspect, yet they introduced fresh perspectives and invigorated the action genre, meriting the interest of action movie enthusiasts.

10 13 Assassins (2010)

Remake of 13 Assassins (1963)

Set in Japan’s Edo Era, the thrilling film “13 Assassins” portrays a country on the brink of collapse under the rule of a cruel and merciless lord, supported by the Shogun. When rumors spread that this tyrant is to be elevated in rank, widespread anxiety ensues, fearing the outbreak of civil war. To prevent further chaos, a noble samurai named Shimada Shinzaemon is recruited with the mission to eliminate the corrupted lord before his power and influence expand. Shimada then assembles 12 valiant warriors to confront the treacherous lord, who is guarded by an army of 200 men.

A Long, Grueling, Bloody Battle Brought to the Screen

Eiichi Kudo’s original “13 Assassins” is worthy of recognition, but it is outshone by the intense action in Takashi Miike’s 2010 adaptation.

In the film “13 Assassins,” a remarkable 45-minute battle scene serves as the climax, showcasing a small band of 13 men taking on and eliminating an impressive 200 adversaries in a continuous sequence of traps and close-quarter fights. This extended scene is filled with raw chaos, making it an indelible visual experience. Additionally, renowned director Takashi Miike infuses the movie with his distinctive brand of humor, resulting in a thrilling, unconventional adaptation of a cherished Japanese tale.

In a surprising turn of events, ex-car thief Randall “Memphis” Raines (Nicolas Cage), enjoying his retired life, is compelled back into action when his brother Kip’s safety is at risk. Reuniting with his accomplished car thief associates, including Sara “Sway” Wayland (Angelina Jolie) and mentor Otto Halliwell (Robert Duvall), Memphis embarks on this daring mission to protect his brother. Simultaneously, he pursues the elusive 1967 Shelby GT500, a coveted vehicle that has evaded him throughout his career.

New Model or Classic?

Modernizing a classic movie by adding a fresh coat of production values doesn’t guarantee superiority. For instance, Dominic Sena’s 2000 remake of H.B. Halicki’s 1974 car chase action film “Gone in 60 Seconds” brought a more refined Hollywood style to the action sequences. However, opinions remain divided as to which version is superior.

For people seeking an exciting and flashy experience, the 2010 remake of “Gone in 60 Seconds” would be their preferred choice. However, car enthusiasts will find more appeal in the original 1974 film due to its classic cars and extensive use of stunts for the high-speed chase scenes. On IMDB, both versions have similar ratings: the 1974 version scores a 6.3, while the 2000 version earns a 6.5.

You can watch “Gone in 60 Seconds” from the year 2010 on Apple TV. Additionally, you have the option to stream the 1974 version of this movie on various platforms such as Hoopla, Tubi, Plex, or Pluto TV.

8 Ambulance (2022)

Remake of The Ambulance (2005)

Will Sharp, played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, is reluctantly pulled into his adoptive brother’s plan to rob a bank to cover their wife’s escalating medical expenses. As they attempt to make their getaway with hostages in tow, they find themselves embroiled in a thrilling and perilous pursuit. In the heat of their escape, they hijack an ambulance carrying an injured police officer and emergency medical technician. This action-packed chase is filled with heart-pounding high-speeds, extended gun battles, and the unyielding effort to secure the safety of the hostages. The tension never eases in the gripping film, “Ambulance.”

A Frantic Chase Around the Streets of LA

As a devoted fan, I have to admit that Michael Bay’s flair for spectacular style doesn’t always translate into successful films for him. But in the case of “Ambulance,” he took things up a notch, significantly expanding on the original with an explosive runtime of 136 minutes compared to the original’s 80 minutes.

As a gamer, I’d say: When it comes to action-packed movies, Michael Bay’s take on “Ambulance” outshines the Danish version with its explosive sequences and over-the-top elements. It showcases Bay at his finest, delivering thrilling scenes that are just as implausible as they are exhilarating. Although the original film has a more character-driven approach to action and drama, “Ambulance” is one of my favorite Michael Bay productions.

7 The Departed (2006)

Remake of Infernal Affairs (2002)

Billy Costigan (played by Leonardo DiCaprio) and Colin Sullivan (Matt Damon) represent two antithetical figures engaged in risky professions. While Billy functions as an undercover police officer, infiltrating the criminal world, Colin serves as a criminal with deep-rooted connections within the Massachusetts State Police as an informant. As their true identities become endangered, they are compelled to reevaluate past and emerging loyalties while attempting to survive.

Two Outstanding Movies With a Different Approach

If you enjoyed “The Departed,” I’d recommend checking out “Infernal Affairs” as well. These films are highly praised action thrillers, boasting impressive scripts and exceptional acting from their renowned directors. “Infernal Affairs” offers valuable insights into Chinese culture and the criminal underworld, delivering the action in an intriguing, rapidly-paced style.

Martin Scorsese could have toned down the action in “The Departed” for a more authentic and intense feel under his direction. However, don’t overlook “Infernal Affairs,” which also delivers gripping action sequences.

6 The Mummy (1999)

Remake of The Mummy (1932)

In simpler terms, American explorer Brendan Fraser as Rick O’Connell discovers an ancient Egyptian city, Hamunaptra, with a team. Unintentionally, they stir up an age-old curse, reviving the mummy Imhotep. Seeking to regain his power and be reunited with his love Anck-su-namun, Imhotep goes on a rampage, targeting the expedition members.

A New Take on a Horror Classic

The 1932 “The Mummy” film marked a significant milestone in horror genre, featuring Boris Karloff in an unforgettable performance. However, the allure of this classic will primarily resonate with aficionados of gothic horror and old cinema. In contrast, the 1999 remake is more contemporary and stylistically different from its predecessor.

Following Brendan Fraser’s remarkable career-peak performance in “The Mummy” (1999), director Stephen Sommers skillfully blended horror, action, and comedy elements, enhancing the classic tale with impressive special effects for the time. Despite being distinctly different films, there is no denying that “The Mummy” (1999) transformed this timeless story into a breathtaking spectacle that became an unforgettable favorite among action cinema enthusiasts.

5 Scarface (1983)

Remake of Scarface (1932)

In a captivating portrayal, the film Scarface recounts the journey of Tony Montana, a Cuban immigrant who arrives in Miami destitute. Through sheer determination and cunning, he transforms into one of America’s most notorious and productive drug dealers. Al Pacino delivers an indelible performance as this iconic gangster in Brian De Palma’s gripping crime-thriller, chronicling Tony’s meteoric rise and eventual demise.

Sensational Crime Thrillers Made Decades Apart

As a gamer, I can tell you that some people might not realize that the “Scarface” game I’m playing is actually a remake of an earlier film. Yes, the original 1932 version was a huge success back in its day, but the movies are quite different from each other.

Two films have their unique strengths, but “Scarface” directed by Brian De Palma stands out for action enthusiasts with thrilling sequences such as the club shootout and the climactic confrontation. Additionally, Al Pacino’s powerful portrayal in this film is truly unforgettable.

4 True Lies (1994)

Remake of La Totale! aka The Jackpot! (1991)

Harry Tasker (Arnold Schwarzenegger) leads a double life, appearing as an unremarkable computer salesman to the outside world, while in reality, he is a highly accomplished secret government agent for Omega Sector.

While pursuing stolen nuclear weapons, Harry’s world is turned upside down as he discovers his wife Helen (Jamie Lee Curtis) has been unfaithful, seeking thrills absent in their marriage. In an effort to win her back, Harry devises a spy operation for Helen, but this secret mission overlaps with his current task.

Peak ’90s Arnold Schwarzenegger Gold

True Lies, released during Arnold Schwarzenegger’s peak acting career, offers an enjoyable blend of action and comedy. The duo of Schwarzenegger and Jamie Lee Curtis added humor effectively amidst the intense sequences. However, it is important to note that some critics argue that the original French film presented its female lead with more dignity and created a more evenly balanced narrative for both leads.

Despite being more packed with action and exaggerated than the original film, “True Lies” by Arnold Schwarzenegger remains an entertaining watch.

3 The Gunman (2015)

Remake of Le choc (1982)

In an attempt to start anew and leave his previous life behind, ex-special officer Jim Terrier (Sean Penn) now resides in the Congo, working for a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO), where he assists in constructing water wells. However, the sins of Jim’s past, which involved assassinating the mining minister to renegotiate contracts, come back to haunt him as he is targeted by a hit squad dispatched by his former superior to cover up their own illegal activities. As a result, Jim is forced to go into hiding and reach out to individuals from his past in order to protect them and save himself.

An Assassin on the Run

The stories of the 1982 film “Le Choc” and the 2015 film “The Gunman” differ slightly. The main distinction lies in their handling of action sequences. While both films contain intense moments of action, “The Gunman” places greater emphasis on these sequences and is more polished as an action movie. In contrast, “Le Choc” provides a more even balance between drama and action, giving equal weight to each element.

Among the two films, “The Gunman” stands out as the more impressive choice despite some variation in style and minor plot alterations. The 2015 remake, titled “Le Choc,” may offer enjoyment but is ultimately forgettable when compared to the thrilling and captivating performance of Sean Penn in “The Gunman.”

Longing to leave his past behind and start anew in his childhood home, Chris Vaughn (played by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson), makes his way back to a small town in Washington. Upon returning, he is dismayed to find that the local mill has shut down and a casino run by his long-standing adversary is now the primary source of income for the community. However, after uncovering that the Casino serves as a front for illegal drug trading, Vaughn secures the position of sheriff and embarks on a mission to restore his hometown to its former glory.

Early Action Rumblings From The Rock

Dwayne Johnson’s acting career has solidified his status as a cinematic mainstay, marked by exceptional performances. However, the initial film “Walking Tall” emerged during his early attempts to make it in Hollywood, and its subpar sequel mirrors that era. Adapted from real-life events, the original “Walking Tall” remains true to its source material, resulting in a compelling drama with raw, authentic violence scenes. In contrast, the 2004 version of “Walking Tall” is a typical action movie filled with clichés and lacking depth.

The size of something isn’t necessarily superior, but the revamped “Walking Tall” offers more extravagant and continuous action. If you’re seeking a thrilling movie that allows you to unwind and have fun, go for the 2004 adaptation.

1 Dawn of the Dead (2004)

Original: Dawn of the Dead (1978)

After coming home to discover her husband has become a zombie, Ana (Sarah Polley) leaves in terror and finds shelter in a mall. There, she encounters other survivors who are also trying to live decently amidst the ever-present threat of the undead who invade the shopping center. As days go by, the group acknowledges they need to leave before the zombie numbers increase and external dangers reach their sanctuary.

An Impressive Remake of One of the Most Influential Horror Movies

George Romero’s “Dawn of the Dead” (1978) is considered a groundbreaking horror film. Therefore, the prospect of a remake raised some concerns before its premiere. Nevertheless, Zack Snyder and James Gunn successfully delivered by staying true to the original while adding more action sequences and intense violence.

As a horror enthusiast myself, I can’t help but appreciate the distinct qualities of both “Dawn of the Dead” versions. The original from 1978 offers a more deliberate build-up with a strong emphasis on character development and tension. On the other hand, the 2004 remake delivers an unrelenting blend of action and terror that leaves you at the edge of your seat. While each has its unique merits, I would strongly recommend experiencing both to fully immerse yourself in the zombie apocalypse saga.
