As a cinephile with over three decades of movie-watching under my belt, I must say that this year has been a veritable feast for horror enthusiasts like myself! The sheer number and quality of terrifying tales have left me both thrilled and slightly sleep-deprived.
2024 has been yet another amazing year for movies across all genres, but the horror genre has truly stood out. We’ve been treated to numerous terrifying masterpieces this year. And as if that wasn’t enough, Robert Egger’s long-awaited Nosferatu is set to hit theaters on Christmas Day, promising another unforgettable horror experience to wrap up 2024. From innovative found footage films like the viral sensation Milk & Serial to chilling stop-motion animation in Stopmotion, this year has been a goldmine for horror fans.
As the year comes to an end, many of us find ourselves reflecting on our favorite movies that were released this year, categorizing them by genre or overall. Narrowing down the top horror films of the year can be as challenging as choosing a favorite child, but someone has to do it. In looking back at the scariest and most impressive horrors from this year, we aim to identify which ones made 2024 an exceptional year for the genre. From original productions, sequels, and adaptations, there’s no shortage of options to consider. After much deliberation, we have managed to narrow it down to ten remarkable horror films that truly stand out. So, without further ado, here are the top horror movies of 2024:
10 ‘The First Omen’
The First Omen exemplifies how a legacy sequel or prequel should be executed skillfully. Arkasha Stevenson’s prequel to The Omen unfolds in the months preceding the birth of the Anti-Christ, Damien. The narrative centers around Margaret (Nell Tiger Free), an American woman who embarks on a religious journey in Rome. Upon her arrival, she confronts a sinister force that tests her faith and uncovers a chilling conspiracy aiming to give birth to an evil entity.
A Legacy Sequel Done Right
Beyond Stevenson’s exceptional direction and stellar editing, Nell Tiger Free delivers a remarkable portrayal of Margaret. This performance is reminiscent of Isabelle Adjani’s intense acting in the 1981 film Possession, particularly during the third act. Interestingly, The First Omen seems to be self-contained and could potentially thrive as a standalone piece, separate from the iconic horror series, The Omen. It offers sufficient depth and includes subtle hints towards the original story that might hold up independently. This film serves as an encouraging example for those aiming to expand upon an established franchise.

9 ‘Heretic’
Scott Beck and Bryan Woods reimagine the genre of religious horror with their latest A24 horror thriller titled Heretic. The story centers around two young Mormon missionaries, Sister Barnes (Sophie Thatcher) and Sister Paxton (Chloe East), as they venture from door to door seeking new members for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Their final stop of the day is at the residence of Mr. Miller (Hugh Grant), where an extensive discussion about Mormonism and conversion takes place. However, this conversation sets off a dangerous game of cat-and-mouse that will challenge their deepest convictions.
A Suspenseful Discussion on Theology
Hugh Grant excels at portraying philosophical, eccentric characters. In this movie, he’s a real troublemaker. His eerie grin and lengthy soliloquies are as intriguing as they are unsettling. The film explores the battle between faith and skepticism, causing not just the nuns to doubt everything, but viewers too. Instead of resorting to startling moments, the film maintains tension by consistently keeping our main characters one step behind Mr. Reed. Sophie Thatcher is phenomenal in the initial part, while Chloe East outshines in the latter half.
8 ‘Exhuma’
As a fervent enthusiast, I must say that when it comes to crafting chilling tales, South Korean filmmakers never fail to deliver. In the realm of horror, Exhuma stands out as a supernatural, folklore-infused masterpiece. This film follows a daring band of paranormal investigators on their quest to uncover the source of an unsettling supernatural plague, leading them to the opulent family graveyard of a wealthy clan. Once they disturb these ancient resting places, they learn the hard way about challenging the sanctity of the wrong burial site.
Intelligent Supernatural Horror
This film might appear to be just another take on exorcisms and possession, but it has more tricks up its sleeve than meets the eye. It’s vast in scale, boasting sharp writing and a skilled ensemble, spearheaded by Choi Min-sik from “Oldboy”. The visual effects are stunning, transforming what could have been a typical supernatural horror movie into something fresh and innovative. The film cleverly employs the tumultuous past between Korea and Japan as a foundation for the real terror it presents. Delving into vengeful spirits, eccentric geomancers, and rich cultural nuances, “Exhuma” stands head and shoulders above other films in the supernatural genre.

7 ‘Oddity’
In a more natural and easy-to-read paraphrase, “Oddity” is an Irish supernatural horror movie that leaves you feeling uneasy. Following the gruesome murder of her twin sister in their rural home, Darcy (Carolyn Bracken) leverages her psychic abilities to delve into the mystery surrounding her sister’s death. As she stays at Dani’s residence, Darcy gradually uncovers a malevolent plot orchestrated by her sister’s husband, culminating in a nerve-wracking showdown with supernatural powers lurking behind the scenes.
Moody Atmosphere Hard at Work
Damien McCarthy’s horror movie is both captivating and terrifying, masterfully constructing an unsettling ambiance through escalating dread and tension. A mysterious knock at the door from a strange visitor initiates a chilling narrative of vengeance, shrouded in hidden mysteries and mournful specters. The eerie atmosphere and gloomy tone transform this single-location film into something peculiar and surprisingly haunting in the most intriguing ways possible.

6 ‘Alien: Romulus’
As a cinephile, I found Fede Alvarez’s “Alien” sequel to be an exhilarating blend of the original “Alien” and its sequel, “Aliens.” The story follows a daring band of young explorers navigating the cosmos, their journey leading them to the haunting remnants of a space station. Little did they know, their scavenging expedition would place them eye-to-eye with the most dreadful creature in the galaxy – the Xenomorph. In a heart-pounding battle for survival aboard a deserted vessel, these brave pioneers find themselves squaring off against the relentless Xenomorphs.
A True Sci-Fi Horror
Alvarez has a history of creating sequels for cherished horror series. His 2013 revival titled “Evil Dead” rejuvenated the franchise and remains popular among fans who loved the original. Once more, he demonstrates his skill in the Alien franchise, returning it to its origins as authentic science fiction horror.
As a cinema enthusiast, I must say that Alien: Romulus manages to strike a chilling balance between horror and science fiction, maintaining a faithful connection to the original series. The Xenomorphs continue to be a source of sheer terror, while the cast delivers captivating performances. What truly sets this film apart is its exceptional sound design – it’s so unsettling that it gives you goosebumps and makes your skin crawl.

5 ‘I Saw the TV Glow’
Jane Schoenbrun’s drama, filled with horror elements, explores adolescence and identity, focusing on a ’90s suburban teen named Owen (Justice Smith). His life takes an intriguing turn when he encounters upperclassman Maddy (Bridgette Lundy-Paine), who shares his fascination for a peculiar late-night TV show called ‘The Pink Opaque’. This show presents an eerie, supernatural version of our world. As Owen watches the show under the soft light of his television, his understanding of reality starts to blur.
An Emotional Blend of Horror and Drama
In the narrative of “I Saw the TV Glow“, the central themes revolve around self-acceptance and personal exploration. Adolescence is already a challenging phase, but when coupled with the struggle to understand oneself, it becomes even more daunting. The horror elements in this movie serve as a reflection of these themes, amplifying its emotional impact.

4 ‘Late Night With the Devil’
Cameron and Colin Cairnes’ imaginative found-footage film, titled “Late Night With the Devil“, appears as if it were genuinely recorded during a live broadcast of a late-night program from the 1970s. On the spooky night of October 31st, 1977, Jack Delroy, host of ‘Night Owls’, plans an extraordinary taping to mark Halloween. Little does he know that he is on the brink of summoning something sinister in front of his viewers, as he invites paranormal investigators and mediums to participate.
A Unique Spin on Found Footage
This movie seems as if it’s been unearthed from the forgotten vaults of a talk show from the late 1970s. The rectangular framing, the set decoration, the costumes, and even the contentious interludes during commercial breaks all feel incredibly genuine to that era. The Cairnes cleverly adapted the found footage genre by basing it around a late-night show recording. They also wisely departed from a common annoyance of the genre by resuming conventional filming when ‘Night Owls’ went on commercial break.

3 ‘Strange Darling’
Among the captivating movies set to debut this year, “Strange Darling” by JT Mollner stands out. This film centers around a man, portrayed by Kyle Gallner, and a woman, played by Ella Fitzgerald, who have a chance encounter outside a motel. After exchanging words and drinks, they ponder the possibility of something more between them, which eventually leads to a one-night stand. However, the next morning, the woman discovers herself in a perilous situation as she must flee from the man who is pursuing her relentlessly.
An Intense Psychological Thriller
This psychological horror has an incredibly tight and engaging script that keeps you hooked from start to finish. It presents ideas and moments just to shatter its effect on the viewer repeatedly. The camerawork is mesmerizing to watch, and the top-notch cinematography comes from first-time cinematographer Giovanni Ribisi. It’s a bloodthirsty, twisted thriller that is led by two powerful lead performances in Gallner and Fitzgerald and excellent use of non-linear storytelling.
Heretic is currently in theaters
2 ‘Longlegs’
One of the most talked about films of the year, Osgood Perkins’ Longlegs is a dread-inducing blend of crime thriller and horror. Set in the ’90s, the film follows young FBI agent Lee Harker (Maika Monroe) who is in pursuit of a Satanic serial killer. She uncovers a series of occult clues that lead to a more sinister crime than she could have imagined. She must use the clues to solve the mystery and end his horrifying killing spree before it’s too late.
A Dread-Induced Nightmare
The hype surrounding Longlegs until its release in mid-July was astronomical. With a stellar marketing campaign, endless discussion on social media, and much word-of-mouth, the film became Neon’s most financially and commercially successful film ever.
Regardless of whether you thought the movie met the tremendous anticipation or not, its impact on viewers is unquestionable. The cinematography and editing build a chilling ambiance that persists throughout the movie’s duration. It’s a kind of film that keeps its audience on edge, searching for something ominous lurking in the corners. The creative sound design further enhances the eerie setting of the film.
1 ‘The Substance’
In a standout performance this year, Coralie Fargeat’s film titled “The Substance” impresses not just as the top horror movie, but as one of the finest films overall. This gripping tale features powerful themes and astounding practical effects. When Elisabeth Sparkle (Demi Moore), a former Oscar-winning actress who now teaches aerobics, finds herself let go from her show on her 50th birthday, she feels useless and neglected. A mysterious young man then approaches her, suggesting that she might be ideal for a substance called The Substance. In exchange, it promises to create a superior version of herself, but with the condition that she maintains her original form every other week.
An Excellently Crafted Body Horror with Smart Commentary
Demi Moore delivers an outstanding, career-defining act in a character that’s distinctly different from any she’s played before. Her exceptional work certainly warrants an Academy Award nomination, if not generating some serious Oscar talk.
This movie serves as a powerful critique of the rigid and impractical beauty ideals that many women encounter each day, and Fargeat’s message is unambiguously conveyed. The script, both intricate and concise, was awarded Best Screenplay at Cannes Film Festival. With themes resonating for women across various age groups, it offers a relatable experience for many viewers. Moreover, the cinematography, particularly in the way it tracks Elisabeth and her co-star Sue (Margaret Qualley), presents its own unique commentary.
The practical effects used for the extremely gory body horror moments are an excellently crafted, loving homage to body horror films of the ’80s without losing sight of the film’s themes. The last 20 minutes are absolutely bonkers, and it’s something you have to see to believe.
