10 Devdas dialogues ft. SRK and Aishwarya Rai’s timeless romance

As a cinephile who has witnessed countless films, I must confess that the dialogues from the timeless masterpiece ‘Devdas’ have left an indelible mark on my heart. Each line, delivered with such passion and depth by the stellar cast, resonates deeply within me.

One way of paraphrasing the given text could be: “Devdas is a highly cherished romantic drama from Bollywood. Directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, this film features Shah Rukh Khan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Madhuri Dixit, and Jackie Shroff. Over the years, it has remained deeply ingrained in the hearts of its audience. The dialogues in Devdas are powerfully charged with intensity, sorrow, love, romance, and raw emotions, which help to explain why it continues to endure.”

The captivating love story was drawn from Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s novel with the same title. This tale unfolds around Devdas, a young man whose life takes a turn for the worse after his family disallows his marriage to his childhood sweetheart, Paro. Subsequently, he succumbs to alcohol and finds solace in the company of a courtesan. The cinematic mastery of Sanjay Leela Bhansali adds an aesthetic charm to the movie, but let’s examine some timeless, cherished quotes from Devdas instead.

10 evergreen Devdas dialogues from Shah Rukh Khan and Aishwarya Rai starrer

1. “Dus saal pehle tumhare naam ka diya jalaya tha maine, aur use aaj tak bujhne nahi diya!”

In this dialogue from the movie Devdas, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan recounts words spoken by her character Paro: “Ten years ago, I lit a lamp with your name on it, and I have yet to understand its meaning.” This line showcases the enduring love she holds for her beloved. Nowadays, it’s uncommon to come across someone who waits patiently for their lover for ten years and actually lights a lamp in their honor.

2.  “Ek baat hoti thi tab tum bahut yaad aati thi… Jab jab main saans leta tha tab tab”

Paro and Devdas harbored a deep, unshakable love within them that neither the march of time nor distance could separate or weaken. For a whole decade, Paro patiently waited for Dev to return from London, while he too felt her absence with equal intensity. When asked if he missed her, Dev responded emotionally, saying, “There was something about you that I often thought of.” Upon further inquiry, he confessed, “Each time I took a breath, it was you I felt.”

3. “Kaun kambakht bardasht karne ko peeta hai… Hum to peete hai ki yaha par baith sake, tumhe dekh sake, tumhe bardasht kar sake! “

Could anyone have foreseen that hardship would drive Devdas to such a dismal state? Ultimately, he becomes an alcoholic and takes up residence in a brothel. This poignant dialogue from the movie was spoken by Shah Rukh Khan when Madhuri Dixit’s character Chandramukhi urged him to cut back on his drinking. It is fair to say that this line played a significant role in defining the distinctive nature of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s direction.

4. “Yun nazar ki baat ki aur dil chura gaye… Hum to samjhe the boot, aap to dhadkan suna gaye!”

In another well-known dialogue from the movie Devdas, Chandramukhi poetically expresses her feelings towards Dev for the first time. She says, “Your gaze speaks more than words, and it has captured my heart… I sensed you were aware, but it was as if you were listening to our heartbeats!”

5. “Jahan ‘kh’ se khush hokar jeena chahiye wahan ‘kh’ se itne khamosh baithe ho, arre ‘kh’ se itne khoye khoye ho, ki pata hi nahi chalta ki aap ghar pe ho”

Let’s pause for a moment to admire Jackie Shroff’s portrayal as Chunnilal in the movie. Despite every character having intense dialogue, it was only Shroff who managed to deliver deep lines with an air of lightness. His distinct acting style in the film has certainly captured everyone’s affection.

6. “Babuji ne kaha gaon chhod do, sabne kaha Paro ko chhod do, Paro ne kaha sharab chhod do, aaj tumne kaha haveli chhod do… Ek din aayega jab woh kahenge, duniya hi chhod do”

As a devoted admirer, a dialogue that undeniably resonates with this film is, “My father said to leave the village, everyone said to let go of Paro, Paro said to give up alcohol, and now you say I should abandon my home. One day will come when they’ll tell me to give up everything… The world itself.”

7. “Aurat maa hoti hai, behen hoti hai, patni hoti hai, dost hoti hai…aur jab wo kuch nahi hoti to tawaif hoti hai”

In this romantic drama movie, Chandramukhi delivers another poignant line. As a courtesan, she keenly perceives the intricacies of femininity, and her statement, “And if there’s nothing else, then one becomes a courtesan,” resonates profoundly.

8. “Kyun na karun guroor, tumhare pass hai hi kya Dev, sirf roop aur daulat. Mere pass guroor bhi hai, roop bhi hai aur aaj ke baad daulat bhi. Aaj se tunhari humari barabari hogi Dev. Agar log tumhe zameendar khahenge toh me bhi thakurayeen suun kar itraungi”

Here’s another poignant exchange between Devdas and Paro, a dialogue that will undoubtedly tug at your heartstrings. In the heated exchanges between Devdas, Paro, and her family, it was the lovers who bore the deepest wounds. When Paro is betrothed to a landlord, she confronts Devdas, who ridicules her for her pride. With her heart brimming with complex feelings, she delivers the dialogue mentioned above.

9. “Har dukh aane waale sukh ki chitthi hoti hai… aur har nuksaan hone waale fayde ka ishara”

In a more natural and easy-to-understand paraphrase, Chandramukhi conveys “For every pain that comes, there is a message of joy… and for every loss, there is an indication of gain.” This sentiment wouldn’t have left such a deep impact if it weren’t for the Dhak Dhak girl. Don’t you think?

10. “Apne hisse ki zindagi toh hum jee chuke Chunni Babu, ab to bas dhadkano ka lihaz karte hai. Kya kahe yeh duniya walo ko jo, aakhri saans par bhi aitraaz karte hai…”

The list should end with a conversation depicting the poignant finale, which vividly illustrates how deeply Devdas was attached to Paro and couldn’t imagine his life without her. This quote alone is powerful enough to bring tears to your eyes, don’t you agree?
