It’s not surprising that Showtime’s series Yellowjackets has turned out to be a success for the network. This survival drama boasts an impressive ensemble cast, including Melanie Lynskey, Christina Ricci, and rising star Sophie Thatcher. Viewers are captivated by the captivating characters and mysterious storyline of this female-driven thriller. What’s more, they can’t seem to get enough of the show’s elements like cannibalism, murder, and cult practices.
Yellowjackets stands out for skillfully integrating hints about future events into its narrative. For instance, Jackie’s (Ella Purnell) death is suggested numerous times throughout the initial season. Moreover, Lottie (Courtney Eaton) experiences a vision of Laura Lee’s (Jane Widdop) demise and her own. A striking example from recent episodes is Mari (Alexa Barajas), who fell into a pit, reminiscent of the character from the pilot episode. While the show abounds with obvious signs of what lies ahead, there are also many instances of subtle hints that might be overlooked on a first watch. Here are ten noteworthy examples.

Jackie Switches Out a Liz Phair Tape for Snow
Season 1, Episode 1 – “Pilot”
Right from the start, Yellowjackets immediately lets me know that Shauna (Sophie Nélisse) and Jackie are key characters in this tale. The show zeroes in on them after the chilling opening scene featuring the pit girl, with Shauna giving Jackie a lift to school as Jeff discreetly exits Jackie’s window – a detail that becomes significant later on.
A Small But Telling Moment
When Jackie climbs into the vehicle, she switches Shauna’s Liz Phair cassette, opting instead for Snow on the radio. This disparity in their musical preferences serves as a reflection of their distinct personalities. Moreover, this moment carries a hint of things to come, marking the start of several instances where the show subtly predicts Jackie’s tragic fate – being frozen to death. The heated argument that culminates in Jackie spending the night outside is also foreshadowed by this seemingly minor shift in music selection. As Shauna notes during their dispute, Jackie had a tendency to make unilateral decisions about things like car tunes, boyfriend choices, college applications, and more.

Ben’s Leg Is Concealed at Soccer Practice
Season 1, Episode 1 – “Pilot”
In the opening episode, we meet more of the team members during a pep rally and soccer practice, giving insights into their group interactions and individual traits. Prior to the match, Coach Ben Scott (Steven Krueger) rallies the team by having them kneel down. Misty Quigley (Sammi Hanratty), who later proves crucial in the wilderness, stands beside him during this moment, always enthusiastic and ready to help.
The First Loss of Many
During Coach Ben’s talk, Taissa (Jasmin Savoy Brown) presses her body against his leg. Initially seeming casual on screen, this scene hinted at Coach Ben’s eventual leg amputation after the plane crash. resourceful Misty would later resort to hacking at his knee with an ax, a desperate move aimed at preventing infection, gangrene, and imminent death. Sadly, Coach Ben would end up losing more than just his leg in the wilderness; he lost faith in the girls, his hope, his beloved partner, and eventually, his life itself.

Natalie Hallucinates Misty at the Keg Party
Season 1, Episode 1 – “Pilot”
In the very first episode of Yellowjackets, all but the solitary outcast Misty participate in a party involving alcohol (kegger). Among them is Natalie (Thatcher), who partakes in LSD with a few unconventional companions. During this trip, she perceives her friends’ faces transform into something unsettling. Additionally, she has a hallucination of a distant, tearful Misty, but the vision quickly fades away. It is later disclosed in Season 2 that Natalie was experiencing a sort of premonition about her own demise at the time of this experience.
The Most Heartbreaking Moment Yet
As grown-up Natalie (Juliette Lewis) rescues Lisa (Nicole Maines) from a lethal fentanyl injection given by Misty (Ricci), the scene swiftly cuts to when Nat had inadvertently caused Javi’s (Luciano Leroux) death by drowning in the lake. This flashback serves as a resolution to her guilt and demonstrates Natalie’s character development, and it subtly references her previous hallucination involving Misty.
As Nat lies still in an ambulance, the camera zeroes in on a distraught Misty, bathed in the flashing lights of the sirens. The loss of her best friend will forever linger with her. Karyn Kusama, the executive producer and director, explained during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that this scene was a symbolic leap across time, suggesting that Misty would always serve as a harbinger of death for Natalie.

Dracula’s Crypt
Season 1, Episode 2 – “F Sharp”
In the series “F Sharp,” Taissa (Tawny Cypress) and Simone (Rukiya Bernard) discuss Sammy’s (Aiden Stoxx) difficulties with socializing at school. Later, while Taissa is working in her office, Simone enters unannounced to inform her that Sammy needs her, as he prefers Tai for his bedtime stories. Simone voiced her worries about their child again, mentioning that it’s been dark inside his room all day, making it feel like a gloomy place similar to Dracula’s tomb.
A Missing Dog Is Found
In the season finale, it turned out that a seemingly innocuous remark by Tai had foretold the gruesome discovery of the altar in the family’s basement crawlspace. Throughout the series, Tai had been experiencing blackouts, during which her darker persona, “Other Tai,” would take control. This hidden side of hers had beheaded the family dog, Biscuit, and arranged his severed head as an offering. The scene was adorned with candles, a human heart, Sammy’s lost doll, and a blood-streaked wilderness symbol.

“You’re on Fire Today”
Season 1, Episode 2 – “F Sharp”
As I sat down to pen my thoughts on the gripping survival drama, Yellowjackets, let me share with you a chilling scene that left an indelible mark on me. The aircraft carrying the Yellowjackets team met its untimely end in the unforgiving Canadian wilderness, leaving some parts ablaze. In an instant, several lives were tragically cut short. Those who miraculously survived found themselves gripped by sheer terror, frantically trying to escape a plane that was swiftly consumed by flames. In this desperate moment, Jackie found herself in a race against time to rouse Shauna from her benzodiazepine-induced slumber. Upon regaining consciousness, Shauna was horrified to find Van (Liv Hewson) trapped in her seat. Determined to help, Shauna made an attempt, but Jackie, driven by a primal instinct for self-preservation, forcefully dragged her away from the doomed plane.
Flames Foretold
Gladly, I managed to escape that predicament, leaving Jackie feeling both ashamed and stunned. It’s no surprise I was furious with her later on, so I quipped sarcastically, “Boy, you’re really setting the world on fire today, Jackie… Or should I say, I was supposed to be the one doing that?”
In the gripping eighth episode of the season, my character and the girls assumed I had perished after being attacked by wolves, nearly cremating me on a pyre. In an eerie twist in season 2, it was Jackie who ended up as a charred corpse instead. My offhand comment would turn out to be frighteningly accurate.

The Blue Blanket
Season 1, Episode 5 – “Blood Hive”
As they find themselves stuck in the wilderness with an uncertain length of stay, possibly for good, Jackie, known for her high maintenance lifestyle, finds it challenging to adjust. Lacking survival skills and showing little contribution to the group’s combined efforts, her peers begin to grow weary and frustrated. Gradually, Jackie’s influence starts to wane.
More Than Just a Blanket
In “Blood Hive,” Jackie is having a late sleep-in as everyone else heads out to work. As Nat wakes her up, Jackie complains, “I’m so cold,” and pulls a blue blanket closer around herself. At that moment, her words seem to predict her own tragic end. A few episodes later, Jackie is found frozen outside, still clutching that same blanket, which she also wore during the dream she had before dying. Once more, the show hints at Jackie’s sad and solitary death that was yet to come.

Taissa Foreshadows Jackie’s Death
Season 1, Episode 7 – “No Compass”
Throughout the first season, Jackie’s demise is repeatedly hinted at as it serves as a crucial turning point in the series. This tragic event plunges the Yellowjackets into darkness, pushing them towards a more primitive lifestyle. The absence of Jackie sets off changes within the group dynamics, causing them to become increasingly divided. Her passing foreshadows the terror and distress that would follow. It also symbolizes the start of their cannibalistic tendencies and Shauna’s evolution into a more ruthless individual.
An Accurate Prediction
In the seventh installment, driven by fears of winter’s perils, Taissa makes up her mind to act before winter arrives. She intends to traverse on foot in search of civilization, believing there must be a road or settlement somewhere. Facing the risk of death seems preferable to her than enduring starvation. It’s not merely the scarcity of game that worries her, but the impending severe weather, as she warns it will feel like freezing to death. As Taissa had foreseen, Jackie would drift into a dream as life ebbed away from her.

A Strong Hint That Natalie Might Be Their Savior
Season 1, Episode 7 – “No Compass”
In a different phrasing: Natalie, Taissa, and Shauna (Lynskey) are devising a plan to trace their blackmailer by secretly placing a GPS tracker inside a bag filled with money. While Taissa and Shauna wait for Natalie to perform the drop-off, Shauna scolds Tai for being supportive, finding it hard to believe that she’d fund Natalie’s rehab and constantly help her out. Taissa clarifies that without Natalie, they wouldn’t be in their current situation. As she continues explaining, she states, “We wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for her actions.
From a Queen Dethroned to a Hero
Taissa’s statement hinted at a connection between Akilah’s (Keeya King) interpretation in Season 3, where she and Lottie thought that Ben served as their pathway home. Following the revelation, the girls chose to keep him alive, but Nat ultimately ended his suffering by mercy killing him during “Thanksgiving (Canada)”. This act led to her being shunned and losing her position among them. The girls held a boisterous, extravagant feast in Ben’s memory, which drew the attention of birdwatchers. Some fans speculate that the girls and Travis (Kevin Alves) might be rescued by an upcoming search party for the trio of avian enthusiasts. If this happens, it would be their salvation resulting from Nat’s difficult sacrifice.

Javi’s Death Is Foreshadowed
Season 1, Episode 9 – “Doomcoming”
In the second-to-last episode of Season 1, Mari accidentally puts the magic mushrooms that Misty had gathered into the stew she cooks for dinner, causing Coach Ben to unknowingly consume them. As the girls experience an intense trip, they lie on the floor, overcome by the effects. Javi is with them, lying down between two logs. It’s easy to overlook this scene amidst all the chaotic events that occur in a single episode, but the camera subtly pans over him three times, giving the impression that he’s dead or buried.
The Group’s Second Cannibalistic Meal
In Season 2, Episode 8, Javi tragically perished by falling through a frozen lake while his companions watched helplessly. The chilling phrase “the wilderness claimed him” described this incident. This event left an indelible mark on Natalie, and it continued to torment her until the end of her life. Javi’s demise symbolized the group’s loss of their naive outlook. In the Season 2 finale, their act of consuming Javi pushed Coach Ben over the edge, causing him to flee in terror from them.

Walter’s Choice in Music
Season 2, Episode 8 – “It Chooses”
In Walter’s charming and comfortable abode, the melody of “Not While I’m Around,” a song from the musical Sweeney Todd, fills the air. This tune is sung by Tobias Ragg and Mrs. Lovett, with Tobias promising to safeguard her. As the words “Nothing will hurt you, as long as I am here” resonate, Walter (Elijah Wood) learns that Adam’s (Peter Gadiot) body has been found.
Smitten With Love
In the upcoming episode, Walter takes significant steps to shield Misty and her companions from discovery regarding Adam’s murder and dismemberment. To achieve this, he eliminates Kevyn Tan (Alex Wyndham) and coerces Matt Saracusa (John Reynolds). Despite knowing about Misty’s violent history with homicidal tendencies and cannibalism, Walter continues to perceive the positive side of her personality.
