As a die-hard Dexter fan who has spent countless hours dissecting the moral complexities of our favorite serial killer, I can wholeheartedly recommend these shows to fellow enthusiasts. If you’ve ever wondered what Dexter might have been like without Harry’s guidance, then “You” is a chilling exploration of that very concept.
Enthusiasts remain captivated by the show Dexter, even after over ten years since Showtime broadcast its debated series finale in 2013. Originating from a collection of novels by Jeff Lindsay, this popular crime drama featured Emmy nominee Michael C. Hall as the central character, Dexter, a forensic investigator who finds an outlet for his murderous impulses by eliminating the most despicable criminals plaguing Miami.
In the future, Dexter: New Blood, a continuation limited series set in upstate New York in 2021, will pick up where we left off with our beloved antihero. A prequel series titled Dexter: Original Sin is also on its way, taking us back to his early days at Miami Metro. Additionally, there’s another sequel series, Dexter: Resurrection, that might see Michael C. Hall return as Dexter once more. Until then, quench your thirst for shows similar to Dexter with these other exciting options!
The Sinner (2017-2021)
Detective Harry Ambrose, portrayed by Bill Pullman, delves into enigmatic cases such as an unexplained instance where a woman felt driven to kill a random individual, a young man accused of deliberately poisoning his adopted parents, and a questionable automobile collision.
As a fellow enthusiast, let me share my perspective: Much like our fascination with the complex character Dexter, The Sinner offers an equally compelling experience. This time, we find ourselves drawn to empathize with the intriguing array of characters who, much like Dexter, grapple with their own unique brands of darkness. Created by Derek Simonds and loosely based on Petra Hammesfahr’s novel, this quasi-anthology series presents a new investigative journey for its lead character each season, keeping us hooked episode after episode.

In the role of a seasoned killer (portrayed by co-creator Bill Hader), he stumbles upon a hidden talent for acting when surveilling a potential target in LA. He yearns to escape his ominous past and pursue his newfound love for acting.
As a die-hard fan, I’d highly recommend “Barry” for fellow Dexter enthusiasts like myself. Bill Hader, best known from Saturday Night Live, delivers an outstanding performance in this series that offers a unique perspective on the life of a conflicted killer striving for normality, but with a comedic twist – albeit a more pronounced one compared to Dexter at first glance.

The Fall (2013-2016)
As a gaming enthusiast immersed in an engrossing narrative, I find myself stepping into the shoes of a London detective, portrayed by none other than Gillian Anderson from “The X-Files”. In this chilling tale, I’m on the hunt for a pattern in a string of unsettling murders. The suspect? A seemingly ordinary family man, played by Jamie Dornan, who hides a dark secret beneath his placid facade. The game is afoot!
“Allan Cubitt’s crime drama, set in the UK, shares similarities with Dexter as it explores the perspective of a killer who balances family life alongside his dark deeds. What sets it apart is that the detective chasing him is also a key character.”

In a twist of events, an exceptionally talented yet emotionally troubled young man, portrayed by the multi-award-winning actor Rami Malek, is persuaded to employ his unblemished hacking abilities against his corrupt employers, who are secretly manipulated by a enigmatic figure, skillfully played by Christian Slater.
For enthusiasts of the series “Dexter,” it’s highly recommended to watch “Mr. Robot” as Elliot, the main character created by Sam Esmail, shares many similarities with Dexter. He is a vigilante who resorts to criminal activities in his pursuit of justice, and he has an imaginary ally akin to his father for assistance.

Lucifer (2016-2021)
Following a sense of dissatisfaction with his role as the ruler of Hell, Satan (Tom Ellis) decides to assume human identity. He then uses his extensive knowledge about Earth’s most notorious sinners to provide consultation services for the police department in Los Angeles.
As a gaming enthusiast who’s always on the lookout for engaging TV shows, I’d highly recommend Lucifer for any fan of Dexter. This gripping DC series on Netflix is based on a unique take on Satan from Vertigo Comics. Just like Dexter, Lucifer uses his supernatural skills to serve justice in a way only he can – as the actual Devil!

Hannibal (2013-2015)
An exceptionally skilled FBI profiler, portrayed by Hugh Dancy, delves into a succession of chilling investigations, oblivious to the fact that one of his closest colleagues – a remarkably insightful criminal psychologist, brilliantly played by Mads Mikkelsen – harbors a hidden secret: he is a clandestine cannibal.
For enthusiasts of Dexter, Bryan Fuller’s critically acclaimed but brief series, Hannibal, based on Thomas Harris’ novels, offers another captivating crime drama. In this show, the iconic character Hannibal Lecter employs his exceptional understanding of criminal minds to aid law enforcement in apprehending individuals similar to himself.

You (2018-2024)
Tale of a Young Man’s Journey (portrayed by Penn Badgley) in Seeking the Ideal Romantic Partner, Even Resorting to Violence if Necessary.
For fans of Dexter, it’s an engaging watch to see how the story might have unfolded if Dexter hadn’t been mentored by his adoptive father, Harry. In this scenario, Dexter could have developed into a character similar to Badgley’s Joe, whose actions on You, including murder, go far beyond what we’ve seen as evil.

Breaking Bad (2008-2013)
Following the revelation of a fatal illness, a dedicated high school chemistry teacher, portrayed by Emmy-winning actor Bryan Cranston, joins forces with an old pupil (played by Aaron Paul) in their illegal endeavor to produce and distribute methamphetamine. This illicit activity serves as a means for the teacher to secure his family’s financial future once he is no longer around.
For enthusiasts of the show Dexter, this is another series worth watching: Similar to Breaking Bad, created by Vince Gilligan, Dexter is a show where the audience finds themselves supporting an unlawful protagonist. However, unlike Walter White, Dexter maintains a more solid moral compass.

Burn Notice (2007-2013)
As a seasoned gamer, I found myself in an unexpected predicament, much like the character played by Jeffrey Donovan – a masterful secret agent mysteriously marked for disgrace, compelled to leave my high-stakes missions behind and settle back into the familiar streets of my hometown. Taking up the mantle of a private investigator, I’m ready to tackle the puzzles and unravel the secrets that lie hidden within these once-familiar walls.
As a long-time fan of Dexter, I must say that Burn Notice is a fantastic show for fellow enthusiasts to watch. Having grown up watching crime dramas, I found myself immediately drawn to the unique blend of action, humor, and suspense that this USA series offers. The protagonist, Donovan’s Michael Westen, with his quick wit and unconventional methods, reminded me a lot of Dexter Morgan. His interactions with Gabrielle Anwar’s Fiona and Bruce Campbell as Sam were both entertaining and engaging, making the show feel like a modern-day take on the classic crime genre. If you’re looking for a show that combines the intrigue of Dexter with a fresh twist, I highly recommend giving Burn Notice a try.

Limitless (2015-2016)
Through ingesting an experimental drug that unleashes one’s full cognitive capabilities, an ordinary young man (characterized by Jake McDorman), transforms into a crucial asset to the FBI, serving as a consulting expert.
As a dedicated Dexter fan, I can’t help but be excited about the prospect of watching Jennifer Carpenter on Limitless. Having portrayed Debra Morgan so brilliantly in Dexter, it’s intriguing to see her transition from a detective to an FBI agent. On this new show, she collaborates with a man who employs extraordinary abilities to combat crime – specifically, drug-enhanced mental acuity. It’s a fresh take on crime-fighting that’s sure to keep us engaged and entertained!
