As someone who has spent countless hours immersed in both the Indiana Jones and Star Wars universes, I must say that the creators behind these iconic franchises have certainly shown their geeky side by cleverly intertwining elements from one to the other. The attention to detail is truly mind-blowing and adds an extra layer of enjoyment for fans like me who can’t help but notice these hidden gems.
As a passionate cinephile, I’d say that two colossal movie dynasties in Tinseltown stand out like no others – Star Wars and Indiana Jones. They couldn’t be more distinct. Star Wars immerses you in an epic space saga, where laser battles unfold among the stars, warriors wield telekinetic powers, and there’s this enigmatic element known as the Force. Conversely, Indiana Jones is all about action-packed adventures that trace the globe-trotting escapades of its charismatic protagonist, who embarks on a quest to uncover ancient artifacts.
Although these two franchises may appear distinct, they share a significant bond. The most striking similarity is their origin – George Lucas, who is the brain behind both universes, as he created not only Star Wars but also Indiana Jones. These series often acknowledge and honor one another across multiple movies and TV productions. If you’re a fan of both, here are 8 instances where Star Wars and Indiana Jones make references to each other.
10 The Headpiece to the Staff of Ra
‘Star Wars: The Clone Wars’ (Season 1, Episode 12)
In my opinion, Raiders of the Lost Ark is a timeless cinematic masterpiece, crafted by the brilliant mind of filmmaker Steven Spielberg. As a fan, I was thrilled to embark on this adventure alongside the legendary archaeologist and adventurer, Indiana Jones, portrayed by Harrison Ford. The movie follows Indiana Jones as he traverses the globe in a high-stakes chase against the Nazis, seeking to unearth the Ark of the Covenant, one of history’s most elusive artifacts. To achieve this feat, he must decipher puzzles and gather various historical relics, such as the Headpiece to the Staff of Ra, which serves as a compass for locating the Ark.
The distinctive headpiece used in the animated “Star Wars: Clone Wars” series can be seen in the episode titled “The Gungan General”. In this particular episode, Senator Kharrus is depicted holding a staff adorned with an identical headpiece. Luckily, Indiana Jones doesn’t have to embark on a journey through another galaxy; instead, he discovers the headpiece within his own storyline.
9 The Ark of the Covenant
‘Star Wars: The Clone Wars’ (Season 1, Episode 21)
As a film enthusiast, let me share some exciting trivia: The Ark of the Covenant isn’t just a historical relic confined to the Indiana Jones series. In Star Wars: The Clone Wars, it makes an appearance too! This ancient and powerful chest is subtly featured in the episode “Liberty on Ryloth”. Can you believe George Lucas slipped in a reference to one of the most iconic artifacts from the Indiana Jones franchise? It’s fascinating how these worlds intertwine!
8 Club Obi-Wan
‘Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom’ (1984)
The adventure titled Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom begins within Club Obi Wan, a nightclub bearing the name of the famed Star Wars character and Jedi Knight, Obi-Wan Kenobi. This establishment is managed by Lao Che (Roy Chiao), a notorious Chinese gangster who sets events in motion with his treacherous actions against Indy during the opening sequence.
7 Club Lao-Che
‘Star Wars: The Bad Batch’ (Season 2, Episode 13)
It’s quite amusing that in Disney’s animated series, The Bad Batch, Star Wars acknowledges the earlier nod by introducing a cantina named Lao-Che. This is a delightful reference to Club Obi Wan and the minor villain from Temple of Doom.
6 “I Have a Bad Feeling About This.”
‘Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull’ (2008)
The Last Jedi where BB-8 reiterates it in binary code.
Harrison Ford has spoken this famous phrase on more than one occasion, not only in his role as Han Solo, but also as Indiana Jones. In the movie “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull,” it was Indiana Jones who uttered this memorable line within the temple of Akator.
5 Chachapoyan Fertility Idol
‘Solo: A Star Wars Story’ (2018)
The Chachapoyan Fertility Idol, often called the Golden Idol, is a well-known artifact from the Indiana Jones series. This imaginary relic found in South America is the initial item that Indiana Jones sets out to find and obtain, followed by the famous chase scene involving a rolling boulder in the movie “Raiders of the Lost Ark.
In the movie “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” which focuses on the early life of Han Solo (portrayed by Alden Ehrenreich), there’s a brief appearance of the Fertility Idol. If you carefully observe Woody Harrelson’s character, you’ll notice the Golden Idol in the background to his left.
4 The Holy Grail
‘Star Wars Rebels’ (Season 3, Episode 17)
In the movie “Indiana Jones: The Last Crusade,” Indiana Jones joins forces with his long-lost father, Henry (played by Sean Connery), in a quest for another historical treasure – the Holy Grail, an artifact said to grant everlasting life upon drinking from it. In the series episode “Through Imperial Eyes,” we find ourselves inside Grand Admiral Thrawn’s office, a collector of artifacts and masterpieces. To his left, there’s a mysterious glowing object in the shadows. It appears that Thrawn obtained the Holy Grail from “Indiana Jones: The Last Crusade” and incorporated it into his collection.
3 OB-CPO Plane Registration
‘Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark’ (1981)
Did you know about the Golden Idol that Indy was searching for in South America? He was flown into the jungle by Jock Lindsey (Fred Sorenson) using his seaplane, whose registration number OB-CPO is a nod to Star Wars fans. This registration number is actually an inside joke, as it refers to two Star Wars characters: Obi-Wan Kenobi and C-3PO.
2 Indy’s Bullwhip Frozen in Carbonite
‘Andor’ (Season 1, Episode 5)
Throughout his adventures, Indiana Jones seeks numerous treasures in his series, but among his prized possessions is none other than his trusted bullwhip, a signature accessory that has shaped his character significantly, alongside his iconic hat. In any action sequence, you’ll often find him using the bullwhip (literally, he uses it quite literally) and cracking it at the villains.
In the episode “The Axe Forgets” from the series Andor, there’s a moment that seems to show a bullwhip encased in carbonite, which is an exciting nod back to Harrison Ford’s famous roles. This bullwhip symbolizes Indiana Jones, while the carbonite block recalls Han Solo from Star Wars.
1 C-3PO and R2-D2 Hieroglyphs
‘Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark’ (1981)
It’s a thrilling moment when Indy finally uncovers the long-lost Ark of the Covenant. As he’s lifting it out of its chamber, we can see a series of hieroglyphs inscribed onto the pillar on his left.
Without a doubt, many people might wonder what most of these pictures and symbols represent. However, if you possess exceptional vision, coupled with being a dedicated fan of Star Wars, then you can likely interpret one of the hieroglyphs on the pillar. The image in question shows C-3PO and R2-D2, the beloved droid duo from Star Wars.
