Characters in action films typically possess specific occupations or histories. It’s quite predictable that the protagonist (or anti-hero) could be a former special forces member, military personnel, martial artist, spy, super cop, or a hardworking individual who keeps to themselves until someone crosses their line. Occupations like contract killers are frequently depicted in action movies. Interestingly, directors often portray characters who take lives for a living, yet manage to keep audiences rooting for them.
I find movie assassins captivating because their profession is rarely straightforward. The allure lies in their skill to infiltrate heavily fortified locations and execute their targets, or eliminate them from a distance using precision rifles. Some, however, are not killers by choice; they’re seeking retribution against those who drew them into this world. Whether they’re heroes or villains, they keep us hooked. Here’s a list of the top action movies featuring assassins in pivotal roles.
10
‘The Killer’ (1989)
In the movie “The Killer,” assassin Jeffrey (played by Chow Yun-Fat) decides to retire after nightclub singer Jennie (Sally Yeh) loses her sight during an incident related to his last assignment. However, he feels remorseful and vows to make amends, taking on one final task to fund her operation that could restore her vision. Will the outcome of this last job proceed as planned?
Hong Kong Cinema at Its Finest
I’ve just learned that John Woo decided to revisit an ’80s classic which played a significant role in launching his Hollywood career. While I appreciate the modern rendition, I strongly recommend you watch the original instead. It’s a power-packed action thriller, enhanced by catchy Cantopop soundtracks, profound symbolism, and visually stunning action scenes. Quentin Tarantino, Johnny To, and Robert Rodriguez have all acknowledged its brilliance, making it hard for anyone to doubt its quality.
9
‘Wanted’ (2008)
In the movie ‘Wanted’, character Wesley (played by James McAvoy) finds joy when a secretive organization proposes he become an assassin, much like his father. Truthfully, his previous office job was monotonous. However, unbeknownst to him, the enigmatic individuals behind this offer, including the stern Julia Fox (Jolie), prove to be unreliable.
When the Deal Is Too Good…
In a unique twist of action-packed cinema, the movie “Wanted” stands out with characters who shoot insect wings and curve their bullets. Filmmaker Timur Bekmambetov, previously a cinematographer and commercial director, showcases his artistic vision beautifully in this film. Grand shots of buildings and intricate details like items on furniture are emphasized. The narrative is interwoven with stunning action sequences, and Angelina Jolie infuses her character with energy and life.
8
’13 Assassins’ (2010)
In the film titled “Thirteen Assassins“, Lord Matsudaira Naritsugu, portrayed by Gorō Inagaki, is on the verge of being granted a position in the influential Shogunate Council. However, some individuals are opposed to this appointment. Consequently, 12 samurais from the Edo period and a hunter are assigned with eliminating him. Yet, achieving this goal won’t be straightforward.
Breathlessly Paced
In the movie “13 Assassins,” Director Takashi Miike doesn’t play around with a light-hearted approach. Instead, he delivers an epic final battle that spans an impressive 45 minutes – a rarity in filmmaking. Remarkably, amid this prolonged fight sequence, Miike skillfully incorporates insightful subplots. This blend of intense action and thoughtful storytelling is a sight to behold. What’s even more remarkable is that the film used very little CGI. Fifteen years after its release, “13 Assassins” continues to shine as one of the most outstanding cinematic achievements of the 21st century.
7
‘La Femme Nikita’ (1999)
In Luc Besson’s movie titled “La Femme Nikita,” Anne Parillaud portrays the character of Nikita, a woman facing a life sentence for killing policemen during a robbery gone wrong. A covert government organization, sensing her capabilities, orchestrates her apparent demise and rebrands her as a skilled assassin. However, complications arise when she encounters romantic feelings.
The Conflict Between Love and Work
Benson skillfully breathes fresh life into the common “join our team” narrative with a smart, zesty screenplay and authentic, compelling characters. He subtly reveals Nikita’s vulnerability beneath her tough facade and sprinkles numerous thought-provoking dialogues throughout the plot. The action sequences are also impressive, which is one of the reasons why the movie was successfully remade into two TV series.
6
‘Collateral’ (2004)
Max (Jamie Foxx) finds being a cab driver in LA tiring yet fulfilling as it allows him to care for his ill mother. However, his tranquility is shattered when Vincent (Tom Cruise), a smooth-talking killer, commandeers his taxi and demands he be driven to various killing spots. So, what does their unwanted partnership become by the end of ‘Collateral’?
Max, a cab driver in LA, finds his job tiring yet rewarding due to caring for his mother. However, his peace is disrupted when Vincent, a slick assassin, hops into his taxi and makes him drive him to various murder locations. What will this unintentional partnership between them be like at the end of ‘Collateral’?
A Terrible Day in the ‘Office’
In a different role, Cruise has portrayed villains, but none with the unbridled, intense ferocity seen in this film. Unlike a typical hostage thriller, however, Michael Mann adds depth to the human aspects, stirring our empathy for Max so profoundly that it seems our own liberty is on the line. The chemistry between Foxx and Cruise is palpable, with the latter’s performance being exceptional enough to secure an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
5
‘Kill Bill: Vol. 1’ (2003)
Kill Bill: Volume 1
In this movie, The Bride – played by Uma Thurman – is shown exactly as the title suggests. She emerges from a four-year-long coma and sets out on a mission to seek revenge against her former lover, Bill (David Carradine), who attempted to end her life on her wedding day due to his jealousy. Anyone involved in her misfortune will face the consequences.
Bill Messed with the Wrong One
In this gritty action movie, Tarantino garnered a cartload of trophies, eliciting remarkable acting from Uma Thurman, Lucy Liu, and Vivica Fox. Simultaneously, he paid tribute to notable films in the genre. Martial arts movies were becoming scarce in the early 2000s, but Tarantino infused the film with heartfelt emotion and enthusiasm, reigniting our interest. The sequel is equally impressive, offering a welcome change of pace with more swords than guns on display.
4
‘Hitman’ (2007)
In the movie “Hitman,” Timothy Olyphant’s character, Agent 47, was raised and trained by the Diana organization to be a ruthless assassin from a young age. At the beginning of the story, we learn that his current mission is to eliminate the Russian president. However, as he prepares for this task, he comes to the realization that he has been deceived by those who employed him. That was a serious mistake on their part.
Sparing No One
With stunning landscapes, catchy melodies, and impressive martial arts sequences, Hitman delivers excitement similar to its video game origin. However, it’s the violence that should primarily capture your attention. Disregard other aspects if you want to fully appreciate the investment of time. You’ll find Olga Kurylenko particularly captivating as the seductive villainess commonly found in movies such as this one.
3
‘The Bourne Identity’ (2002)
As a cinephile, I find myself engrossed in the thrilling tale of “The Bourne Identity,” where the protagonist, played by Matt Damon, experiences a chilling rescue from fishermen in the vast expanse of the Mediterranean Sea. With no recollection of his past, he embarks on a quest to unravel his identity, only to be pursued relentlessly by assassins. In my pursuit for answers, I unearth the shocking truth that this man, like me, was once an elite assassin, serving a covert CIA program known as “Operation Treadstone.
As Good as the Ludlum Books
The Doug Liman movie is frequently recognized for significantly altering the spy film genre. Prior to this, James Bond dominated the cinemas. However, in this movie, we were offered a more serious portrayal that mirrored Robert Ludlum’s book style. Interestingly, when Bond returned, the franchise had to adjust its tone to match this new approach. The action and plot twists are what make “The Bourne Identity” stand out, but without Matt Damon’s presence, none of it would have made an impact.
2
‘The Villainess’ (2017)
From the movie “The Villainess,” Sook-hee (Kim Ok-vin) is an exceptionally proficient assassin who always finishes her tasks without fail. However, during her latest mission, things take a turn for the worse as she is apprehended by law enforcement after slaughtering numerous individuals within a building. Instead of imprisoning her, South Korea’s intelligence agency proposes enlisting her services. Yet, it’s inevitable that some troubles will crop up.
Korea’s Finest Action Movie
In a skillful manner, Director Jung Byung-gil crafts an edge-of-your-seat action-thriller with a deeply resonant emotional heart. Kim Ok-vin’s outstanding portrayal beautifully encapsulates the yearning for independence that many professionals can identify with. Moreover, all adversaries are portrayed as complex characters, making each act of retribution against them hit hard. The action sequences in this film surpass those seen in Hollywood productions.
1
‘John Wick’ (2014)
In a way that echoes the plot of John Wick, even for those who haven’t seen the movie, Wick (played by Keanu Reeves) is grieving over his wife when a heartless mobster named Iosef Tarasov (Alfie Allen) and his henchmen intrude. They not only kill his beloved dog but also steal his car. Given the circumstances, it’s no surprise that he doesn’t let this go unpunished.
Gun-Fu Masterpiece
Among the John Wick films, the first one stands out as the strongest because it’s more straightforward. In this movie, John Wick is primarily focused on seeking revenge, without the intricate complexities of the Higher Table. At first glance, it might seem like a series of intense fights with little depth or structured narrative. However, it is a masterpiece of cinema, rich in memorable visuals and characterized by bold directorial decisions. It’s important to note the exceptional performance delivered by Keanu Reeves.
