As a devoted fan of the enchanting world of Scooby-Doo, I must say that the roster of illustrious personalities who have graced our beloved cartoon with their presence is nothing short of extraordinary! Among these luminary figures, three stand out as beacons of talent and charm.
The beloved Scooby-Doo series, initially conceived by the pioneering Hanna-Barbera animation team, is famed for its diverse and entertaining guest stars spanning various fields such as musicians, authors, and even scientists. In just its animated run, the franchise has nearly a century of celebrity appearances, with this number still expanding as more innovative and unique cameos are added.
Several celebrities from the list often reappear in the Scooby-Doo series, showcasing the enduring appeal and the diverse collection of eerie mysteries that Mystery Inc. solves in each episode. While shows like “Scooby-Doo And Guess Who?” were built around guest appearances, there are still many celebrity performances that tend to be underappreciated. Given the expansive history and rich lore of a franchise like Scooby-Doo, some voice actor cameos can be quite unexpected.
11 Steve Buscemi
Scooby-Doo and Guess Who? Season 1, Episode 19 – “Fear of the Fire Beast!” (2020)
In the cartoon “Scooby-Doo and Guess Who?”, Steve Buscemi’s character, who usually portrays quirky villains, finds it challenging to keep a low profile in Sicily, Italy, as people think he truly embodies the roles he often plays. Amidst the townsfolk’s fear of him, he is also chased by a fire-breathing monster.
In my humble opinion as a film critic, “Fire Beast: A Tale from Mount Etna” unveils an intriguing twist where we discover the Fire Monster is none other than Nana, a relative of Steve Buscemi’s character. Nana, who hails from the same family tree as our beloved actor, transforms into this fearsome creature as a test to prove that Steve Buscemi is not just another stereotypical gangster, but a true hero.
10 Sonny & Cher
Multiple Appearances
During their honeymoon on Shark Island, iconic pop duo Sonny and Cher find themselves stranded when the resort they’re staying at, Pescado Diabolico, turns out to be rundown and deserted. Just as things seem hopeless, a group of detectives, known as the mystery gang, arrive in time to rescue them and investigate the abandoned resort. As they delve deeper, Sonny and Cher uncover a monstrous shark lurking on the island grounds. This thrilling adventure became one of the most-watched and critically acclaimed episodes of “The New Scooby-Doo Movies” series.
In the “Scooby-Doo and Guess Who?” series, Cher reprised her role, making another appearance as herself in an episode called “Cher, Scooby And The Sargossa Sea!” This time around, sharks with a villainous streak were causing trouble for Cher’s yacht. It was Scooby and Cher who teamed up to drive those sharks away. The episode featuring her second appearance on the show aired about 50 years after her initial appearance alongside Sonny in 1972.
9 “Weird Al” Yankovic
Multiple Appearances
In the movie “Scooby-Doo and Guess Who?”, “Weird Al” Yankovic doesn’t just make a brief appearance; instead, he plays his own character. In the episode titled “Attack of the Weird Al-Osaurus,” the Mystery Gang encounters him conducting an accordion workshop in the Rocky Mountains. Strangely enough, the music from these sessions triggers a landslide, awakening a dinosaur from its cave slumber. The dinosaurs that terrorized “Weird Al’s” accordion camp turn out to be animatronic creatures controlled by phony archaeologists working on a dig site.
In season 2 of “Batman: The Brave and the Bold,” Al, or rather “Weird Al” Yankovic, makes an appearance in a crossover episode with Scooby-Doo. The storyline commences when the gang goes to one of Al’s concerts, only to find that the venue is mysteriously haunted. The Footlight Phantom, a ghostly figure, begins to terrorize the theater and its guests. However, they eventually uncover that this entire ordeal was orchestrated by the Joker and the Penguin.
8 Jim Belushi
Multiple Appearances
In a brief cameo during the Christmas special of “What’s New, Scooby-Doo?”, actor Jim Belushi, known for his roles in “According to Jim” and “SNL,” takes on the character Asa Buckwald, an innkeeper outside a town that dislikes and doesn’t celebrate Christmas due to a ghostly Headless Snowman. Initially, it appears that Asa is the antagonist because his business thrives from the chaos, but it turns out that the real villain is Professor Higginson, driven by his insatiable desire for the town’s gold.
In the year 2008, Jim Belushi reappeared in the animated film “Scooby-Doo and the Goblin King” portraying the character of Glob. Glob served as the soldier under the command of the Goblin King, who was attempting to be pacified by the group. However, they later discovered that the Goblin King and his efforts to save his daughter were surprisingly noble.
7 Christian Slater
Scooby-Doo and Guess Who? Season 1, Episode 25 – “The High School Wolfman’s Musical Lament!” (2020)
Previously, during his high school prom at a performing arts institute, Slater refused to dance with his fellow student Maryanne Mulrooney. This awkward moment led him to seize control and disrupt the event by donning a werewolf costume. Later, at their reunion, Christian Slater repeated this behavior, causing havoc in his werewolf attire. This drew the attention of Mystery Inc., where he deceived them by rescuing the group from what appeared to be his own demise.
In my role as an ally, I orchestrated a ruse by feigning injuries and leading them astray, ultimately setting the stage for a trap. Little did we know, it was Christian Slater who had been unleashing the terror as the werewolf all along. Remarkably, Mulrooney found it within himself to grant forgiveness, not only for his past outbursts but also for this hidden identity.
6 Smash Mouth
What’s New, Scooby-Doo? Season 3, Episode 13 – “Reef Grief!” (2005)
Smash Mouth, known for their hit “All Star,” also appeared on the animated series “What’s New, Scooby-Doo?” In an episode titled “Reef Grief!”, the band is featured as they prepare and perform at the Australian Beach-A-Palooza Blast. In this show, there’s a lot of tension between the band members and other competitors in a sand castle building contest, among them Rama Yam.
In the midst of rumors about a Coral Reef Monster wreaking havoc, destroying sandcastles, the team encounters various rivalries while they hunt for this supposed beast. However, it turns out that the real culprit behind the sabotages at the festival was none other than Rama Yam, not some mythical monster all along.
5 Don Knotts
The New Scooby-Doo Movies Season 1, Episode 9 – “The Spooky Fog of Juneberry” (1972)
In a different phrasing: Famous for portraying Barney Fife in The Andy Griffith Show, Don Knotts takes on another lawman role in the town of Juneberry, which mirrors his previous character. The Scooby-Doo gang, while traveling along an abandoned road, are seeking a place to dine. They arrive at Juneberry, only to find a thick fog enveloping the town, particularly its cemetery.
When Don Knotts, the lawman, found them, he led them to a secure location. As the story unfolded, it became apparent that Don Knotts was believed to be responsible for the fog. However, as events progressed, they realized it wasn’t Don Knotts, but a ghostly figure known as the Skeleton Man who had taken over the area. But upon further investigation, they found out it was Gene Haultrey, attempting to steal cattle amidst the foggy conditions. In the end, Mystery Inc. managed to expel him from the town of Juneberry, causing the fog to lift and restoring light to the town once more.
4 Cass Elliot
The New Scooby-Doo Movies Season 2, Episode 7 – “The Haunted Candy Factory” (1973)
In one of the episodes of “New Scooby-Doo Movies,” the renowned singer Cass Elliot, who was a key vocalist with the Mamas & Papas, portrayed a character resembling herself, named the proprietor of the Sugar Plum Candy Factory. When her security guard vanished and strange apparitions started haunting her factory, she enlisted the help of the mystery team to safeguard her business.
In the story, spheres colored green start dominating the factory, persistently bothering both the woman and her business. The plot has sparked a bit of debate because the writers had Cass Elliot make humorous comments about weight and diet culture. Sadly, she died just months after the episode’s broadcast. Despite this tragic end, she remains remembered fondly as one of the most significant guest stars in the Scooby-Doo series due to her portrayal of the cheerful and caring new proprietor of the Sugar Plum Candy Factory.
3 Harlan Ellison
Multiple Appearances
Known science fiction author Harlan Ellison, famous for writing “I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream”, makes an appearance in the cartoon series Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated. In his debut role, Harlan Ellison is introduced as a visiting professor at Darrow University.
The group known as the Mystery Gang heads to a university following the unsettling revelation that the mythical creature from Hatecraft’s stories, Char Gar Gothakon, has sprung to life. It was Harlan Ellison who initially encountered this beast, being assaulted by it on his path to his parked vehicle. Towards the end of the series, Harlan Ellison reemerges as Mr. E, a crucial adversary within the franchise’s narrative.
2 Tim Curry
Scooby-Doo! and the Witch’s Ghost (1999), Scooby-Doo! and the Goblin King (2008)
In the chilling tale of “Witch’s Ghost“, it’s none other than Tim Curry who portrays Ben Ravencroft, a horror novelist with an intriguing twist. He invites Mystery Inc. to his Oakhaven residence as his honored guests. Little do they suspect that the quaint town is actually tormented by the spectral presence of Ben’s ancestor, Sarah, who was known for her dark arts. What remains a secret to the group is Ben’s sinister intent: he yearns to exploit Sarah’s haunting powers for global domination, along with the aid of the Hex Girls.
In “The Goblin King,” Tim Curry portrays the enigmatic character of the Goblin King. Shaggy and Scooby find themselves at a Halloween fairground, mysteriously drawn into a magical realm governed by a Goblin King. Initially perceived as wicked, he is actually on a quest to rescue his daughter, Fairy Princess Willow.
1 Mark Hamill
Multiple Appearances
In the second season of “The New Scooby-Doo Movies,” Corey Anders was introduced as one of the early voice acting roles for Mark Hamill. Originally, this character hailed from another series titled “Jeannie,” which debuted in 1973. This show centered around a man named Corey who stumbled upon a genie named Jeannie in a peculiar fantasy setting. Interestingly, Mark Hamill’s part was a creative blend of the two shows, as both he and Jeannie made guest appearances.
In addition to this instance, Mark Hamill has made multiple appearances within the franchise. Notably, he portrays more than six characters, such as himself, his iconic DC villain roles as The Joker and The Trickster in “Scooby-Doo and Guess Who?”.
