13 Cult Classic Movies to Stream for Free

As a cinephile who’s spent a good chunk of my life navigating the labyrinth of film history, I must say these three movies have certainly left their mark. Each one offers a unique blend of charm and cheesiness that makes them stand out from the crowd.

For many years, the big screen has presented moviegoers worldwide with a variety of acclaimed cult favorites, which have held audiences spellbound regardless of their critical or financial success at the ticket counter. Not every film that garners a fervent cult audience is universally adored by critics, and some of the most beloved movies were even met with scathing rejection by the general public (such as the notorious flop Showgirls).

Despite repeated criticism, these supposedly flop Hollywood movies continue to draw interest from intrigued viewers, who often categorize them as so-bad-they’re-good productions. However, there are cult films that have garnered even more respect and admiration since their initial release, such as David Bowie’s legendary fantasy musical Labyrinth. Notably, these films often star some of the most renowned talents in the entertainment industry, including Jake Gyllenhaal, Keanu Reeves, and Sandra Bullock.

Here are 13 cult classic movies you can stream for free.

In 1986, music legend and cultural icon David Bowie gave an extraordinary performance as Jareth the Goblin King in Jim Henson’s fantasy musical film “Labyrinth.” This tale follows Sarah, a resolute 16-year-old portrayed by Jennifer Connelly, who finds herself on a perilous and thrilling journey after wishing her baby brother away with goblins from her beloved book. As the clock ticks, Sarah must outwit the powerful Goblin King, navigate his magical labyrinth, and keep her senses sharp to complete her mission before time runs out.

Bowie Steals the Show

Henson took ideas for the iconic ’80s production from well-loved movies such as “The Wizard of Oz”, “Alice in Wonderland”, and Maurice Sendak’s “Outside Over There”. He aimed to cast a prominent actor who would revolutionize the film’s music. Famous musicians like Sting, Michael Jackson, Mick Jagger, and Prince were considered, but eventually, Bowie was chosen for his extraordinary performance and magnetic appeal. Bowie captivated audiences with his unique portrayal, contributing significantly to “Labyrinth” achieving cult classic status.

Jake Gyllenhaal was on the verge of dominating Hollywood when he starred in the 2001 sci-fi psychological thriller “Donnie Darko,” set in October 1988. The story revolves around a troubled teenager named Donnie, who experiences strange encounters with a six-foot-tall, anthropomorphic rabbit figure named Frank. Frank predicts the end of the world and gives Donnie only 28 days, 6 hours, 42 minutes, and 12 seconds to occur. As Donnie’s faith in Frank grows, he finds himself committing crimes during his sleepwalking episodes as time ticks away.

Kelly’s Complex & Thought-Provoking Thriller

In approximately one month, screenwriter and filmmaker Richard Kelly penned the screenplay for the movie titled “Donnie Darko“. His goal was to craft a science fiction tale that mirrored the growth of a young person within the context of 1980s suburban America under Reagan’s administration. He aimed to create an amusing and heartfelt reminiscence of this era.

In its initial release, Donnie Darko made only $517,375, but eventually developed a devoted fanbase that contributed to its total U.S. video sales exceeding $10 million. This earned it a spot on Empire magazine’s list of “The 50 Greatest Independent Films of All Time.”

11 Clerks (1994)

Free on Pluto

As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but reminisce about the time when Kevin Smith, a multitalented director, writer, and comedian, first graced our screens with his groundbreaking debut, “Clerks,” in 1994. This black-and-white comedy kicked off his captivating View Askewniverse and introduced us to the unforgettable duo Jay (played by Jason Mewes) and Silent Bob (Smith himself). This independent film was more than just a movie; it was a launchpad for a unique fictional universe.

Smith’s Memorable Quirky Characters

In a comedy movie, Smith plays the role of Silent Bob, while his longtime friend and partner-in-crime, Jason Mewes, is known for his portrayal of Jay. This was their debut in a series of nine films they would star in together.

Kevin Smith’s low-budget film, “Clerks,” was filmed at a convenience store where he had previously worked, with a production cost of only $27,575. Upon its release, it generated $4 million in earnings and received critical acclaim for its eccentric and entertaining characters, absurd script, and zany humor. The comedy won the “Award of the Youth” at the Cannes Film Festival and remains an essential indie film to watch.

10 An American Werewolf in London (1981)

Free on Freevee

Renowned director John Landis created an innovative blend of comedy and horror with the 1981 release of “An American Werewolf in London“. This movie revolves around friends David Kessler (played by David Naughton) and Jack Goodman (Griffin Dunne), who are American graduate students on a backpacking trip through Europe from New York City. In Yorkshire, England, they come face-to-face with a horrifying werewolf in the North York Moors. Following their encounter with the beast, David finds out that he will undergo a transformation into a vicious monster by the next full moon.

Landis’ Brilliant Blend of Horror & Humor

Landis initially conceived the concept for the image while working as a production assistant on the 1970s film “Kelly’s Heroes” in Yugoslavia. There, he encountered a group of Romani people performing a ritual to prevent a deceased person from rising again from their grave.

At first, it was challenging for the director to secure funding, as potential investors felt the script combined elements of horror and comedy in a way that was either too frightening for a comedy or too amusing for a horror film. However, An American Werewolf in London is now widely praised for its skillful fusion of genres and has become an undisputed classic, earning the first-ever Academy Award for Best Makeup.

Without a doubt, one of the most overlooked treasures from the ’80s is the 1989 fantasy comedy “Teen Witch,” starring Robyn Lively as fifteen-year-old Louise Miller. Upon turning sixteen, she unexpectedly uncovers her magical abilities, learning that she’s actually a witch! With this newfound power, she strives to gain popularity and win over her longtime crush. The wise psychic Madame Serena (played by Zelda Rubinstein) helps Louise navigate her unique life and identity in this fun and nostalgia-filled movie.

A Campy ’80s Classic

Originally envisioned as a gender-swapped adaptation of the 1985 hit “Teen Wolf,” the initial script for this fantasy film leaned heavily towards the raunchy and risqué style of the teen comedy “Porky’s.” However, due to changes made for a PG-13 rating, it incorporated musical numbers instead. Unfortunately, “Teen Witch” struggled at the box office with tough competition from films like “Field of Dreams” and “Pet Sematary,” leading to its dismal $27,843 earnings.

It performed exceptionally well on home release and eventually turned into a required viewing, earning the title “a cult film that transcends categorization due to an unusual mix of music, magic, and sensuality,” according to the New York Post.

8 Phantasm (1979)

Free on Freevee

In the initial chapter of the chilling science fiction horror series that debuted in 1979, titled Phantasm, audiences were introduced to the ominous villain known as the Tall Man, a malevolent supernatural figure disguised as a mortician who resurrects the dead as grotesque zombies, causing chaos in a peaceful rural town. After observing the Tall Man’s suspicious activities at a funeral, a 13-year-old boy teams up with his hesitant older brother Jody and their friend Reggie to confront this terrifying entity.

A Dazzling Cinematic Feat for Coscarelli

In the movie “Phantasm”, many of its actors and production team were beginners or aspiring performers. The film’s director and writer, Don Coscarelli, primarily financed it himself, along with assistance from his father. The budget was relatively small, estimated to be approximately $300,000.

As a passionate filmmaker, I wore multiple hats – cameraman and editor – because I didn’t have the budget to hire anyone else. My dedication proved fruitful when Phantasm, my creation, earned a staggering $22 million worldwide. It was lauded for its chilling special effects, terrifying antagonist, and poignant portrayal of death and sorrow. This horror classic has cast a lasting spell on the genre, paving the way for countless imitators. Remarkably, its success spawned four direct sequels, though none could quite match the fear factor of the original masterpiece.

7 Tommy Boy (1995)

Free on Pluto

In the hilarious 1995 comedy “Tommy Boy”, the unforgettable duo Chris Farley and David Spade teamed up to bring laughter to audiences everywhere. This film tells the story of Tommy Callahan (played by Farley), a man who is not exactly bright or socially adept, as he strives to show that he’s got what it takes to succeed after the passing of his kind-hearted industrialist father. Faced with the challenge of saving his family’s struggling auto parts factory from bankruptcy, Tommy must collaborate with the uptight and sarcastic accountant Richard Hayden (portrayed by Spade).

Farley’s Wonderfully Wacky Performance

Previously known SNL actors showcased their hilarious abilities to perfection, seamlessly bouncing jokes off each other in this amusing skit. Notable figures such as Dan Aykroyd, Bo Derek, and Rob Lowe also graced the production with their comedic talents.

Despite earning $32.7 million during its initial cinema release, the movie “Tommy Boy” was considered a box office letdown due to Chris Farley’s star power. However, it gained renewed popularity on home video and eventually became a beloved cult classic. The ’90s favorite showcased Farley at his zaniest and highlighted his endearing friendship with David Spade.

6 Masters of the Universe (1987)

Free on Tubi

Following the remarkable portrayal of Ivan Drago in Rocky IV, Dolph Lundgren embarked on a new adventure in 1987, delving into the realm of superheroes by leading the cast of Masters of the Universe. This film is an adaptation from Mattel’s media franchise, featuring Lundgren as the strong and formidable He-Man. In his quest to find a cosmic key essential for defeating his arch-nemesis Skeletor (portrayed by Frank Langella), he encounters teenagers Kevin (played by Robert Duncan McNeill) and Julie (Courteney Cox) on Earth.

A Cherished Gem By ’80s Fans

In an exciting turn of events, the film titled Masters of the Universe served up a generous helping of humorous, screwball antics. The movie spotlighted Lundgren as a valiant and formidable hero that fans of the toy series couldn’t help but cheer for, as he battled against the wicked Skeletor.

37 years ago, I bore witness to “Masters of the Universe,” a cinematic adventure that neither resonated with audiences nor critics, ultimately contributing to the demise of Cannon Films. However, it has since been cherished by ’80s kids as an eccentric, high-camp spectacle deserving of celebration. Despite its initial reception, it’s a film that should be appreciated on its own merits. Now, fast forward to 2026, where the franchise returns with a new live-action installment under the guidance of director Travis Knight.

5 Point Break (1991)

Free on Tubi

In 1991, Patrick Swayze and Keanu Reeves displayed incredible athleticism in Kathryn Bigelow’s action-packed film “Point Break.” Keanu Reeves played Johnny Utah, a new FBI agent who disguises himself as a surfer to investigate a gang of bank robbers. This peculiar group donned masks of past U.S. presidents during their crime spree. As the story unfolds, Johnny forms an unforeseen bond with Bodhi (played by Swayze), the charismatic leader of the team, which muddies the waters regarding his allegiance and complicates the case.

Reeves & Swayze Make Movie Magic

Before Keanu Reeves got the main role of Johnny Utah in Point Break, several promising actors such as Johnny Depp, Val Kilmer, and Matthew Broderick were also considered for the part. Both Reeves and Patrick Swayze underwent rigorous training with renowned professional surfer Dennis Jarvis to master the challenging water stunts. In fact, Swayze shared that he came close to dying up to ten times during filming, but his determination ultimately paid off – Point Break became a box office hit, earning over $83 million and boosting the careers of both Reeves and Swayze as popular leading actors.

4 Practical Magic (1998)

Free on Pluto

1998 saw Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman team up to bring to life the beloved autumn classic, Practical Magic, where they portrayed sisters Sally and Gillian Owens. Hailing from a lineage of distinguished and powerful witches, these siblings were brought up by their nurturing aunts after their parents’ untimely demise due to a heartrending family curse. The duo had to harness their magical abilities to lift the curse and shield themselves against an evil entity from Gillian’s past.

A Spooky Season Fan-Favorite

The captivating chemistry shared by Bullock and Kidman, combined with the mesmerizing ambiance and enticing plot, made “Practical Magic” an essential Halloween viewing for many enthusiasts.

Despite not making waves at the box office or receiving positive reviews from critics initially, “Practical Magic” has continued to captivate audiences over the years, earning itself a devoted cult fanbase that eventually sparked talk of a sequel. Both lead actresses are set to return for this eagerly-awaited follow-up.

3 Showgirls (1995)

Free on Tubi

Without a doubt, one of the most critically panned films ever on the big screen, the 1995 erotic drama “Showgirls” features Elizabeth Berkley from “Saved by the Bell” as Nomi Malone, a drifter and ambitious performer seeking fame and fortune in Las Vegas, determined to become Sin City’s top showgirl. As Nomi ascends through the ranks of the city’s nightlife, she starts to question whether the glamour and glitz are merely superficial.

A Notorious Critical & Commercial Failure

Initially released, the movie “Showgirls” was widely criticized and torn apart, often due to its excessive nudity, which critics found disrespectful towards women. Many felt that both the portrayal of Berkeley’s character, Nomi, and the film’s script were flawed as well.

Despite the initial negative reception, “Showgirls” has evolved into a much-loved “so bad, it’s good” cult film. Over time, it has been reappraised and is now admired for its satirical storytelling style. However, it remains one of the worst movies ever made, which ironically adds to its charm.

2 Attack of the Killer Tomatoes (1978)

Free on Tubi

Another so-bad-it’s-good Hollywood extravaganza is none other than the 1978 parody film Attack of the Killer Tomatoes, a spoof of B movies that focuses on the efforts of a group of determined scientists who are tasked with putting an end to the bloody and murderous spree of mutated tomatoes that have become sentient, with the fruit revolting against their confinements and humanity. When the tomatoes go on a brutal rampage, the government task force and scientists must act quick to prevent a worldwide catastrophe.

A Surprising Parody Franchise Is Born

The low-budget movie titled “Attack of the Killer Tomatoes ” managed to earn $576,000 at the box office despite receiving unfavorable reviews from critics. Even Variety, a well-known publication, criticized it severely, stating that the film “doesn’t deserve sarcasm.

Despite garnering a mere 27% approval on Rotten Tomatoes, I must confess that I’ve always had a soft spot for the zany fun of “Attack of the Killer Tomatoes.” It may not have been critically acclaimed, but it certainly entertained its fans and even managed to spawn three follow-up sequels. One of these, “Return of the Killer Tomatoes!” from 1988, featured a then-unknown George Clooney in one of his early roles. However, just like the original, each subsequent installment received similar criticisms from reviewers.

1 Clue (1985)

Free on Pluto

As a die-hard fan, I’d like to sing praise to the brilliant 1985 black comedy mystery movie “Clue,” starring an all-star cast including Tim Curry, Christopher Lloyd, Eileen Brennan, and Martin Mull. This film magnificently transforms the classic board game into a captivating tale set in a secluded New England mansion in 1954. The dinner party invitees, each with their unique personalities, find themselves assembled under mysterious circumstances as Mr. Boddy, our cunning host and blackmailer, meets an untimely end before the evening’s festivities can truly kick off. Left to unravel this shocking murder, these diverse guests band together, resulting in a rollercoaster ride of laughter and chaos.

A Worthy Adaptation of the Classic Board Game

Curry’s side-splitting portrayal as the butler Wadsworth significantly enhanced the exhilarating cinematic rendition of Clue, leaving fans and critics craving more of the charismatic madness and quirky behavior displayed by beloved characters such as Professor Plum (Lloyd) and Colonel Mustard (Mull).

For over three decades now, the beloved movie Clue continues to be cherished for its hilariously unconventional interpretation of the timeless mystery game, and for Curry’s exceptional performance as the cunning (and spirited) butler, with numerous fans considering it among the actor’s best works.
