14 People Arrested in Comic-Con Human Trafficking Sting, Authorities Say

As a seasoned Comic-Con attendee for over two decades now, I’ve seen it all – from cosplay to camaraderie, and even some characters that are less than heroic. The recent news of human trafficking incidents during the convention is a chilling reminder that our beloved event has become a target for unsavory activities.

Over the weekend at Comic-Con, I’m sad to report that authorities apprehended fourteen individuals and rescued ten victims as part of an undercover operation against human trafficking.

The San Diego Human Trafficking Task Force, under the California Department of Justice, launched an operation aimed at rescuing sex trafficking victims and apprehending sex buyers during the San Diego convention, which took place from July 25-27.

As a gamer, I was disheartened to learn that unscrupulous individuals often seize the opportunity of massive events like Comic-Con to abuse their victims for financial gain. California Attorney General Rob Bonta made this known in a statement, emphasizing that these arrests serve as a strong warning to potential wrongdoers: your actions will not go unpunished. I’m thankful for our tireless partners within the San Diego Human Trafficking Task Force; their collaboration has been instrumental. Our office stands tall in its dedication to empowering vulnerable Californians, providing them with aid and advice during their most critical moments.

The undercover mission against human trafficking involved police officers posing as clients in the sex trade, aiming to locate and interact with possible victims while apprehending their exploiters. Additionally, authorities created fake ads offering sex services to catch individuals purchasing sex.

After rescuing nine adults who could potentially be victims, along with a 16-year-old minor, professionals from adult and juvenile support services were on hand to offer assistance whenever it was required.

“As a gamer and someone who values humanity, let me emphasize that there’s nothing more underhand than human trafficking. The manipulation and brutality used to force individuals into labor or sexual exploitation is unacceptable. In my role as the Sheriff, I stand with all our justice allies in ensuring we bring these criminals to justice. I commend the attention given during the recent convention aimed at identifying and rescuing victims of human trafficking.”

As a seasoned law enforcement officer with years of experience under my belt, I have witnessed numerous collaborations between various agencies to tackle complex crimes. However, the operation I recently participated in was truly unprecedented. It involved a multitude of entities such as the DOJ, California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, California Highway Patrol, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Homeland Security Investigations, National City Police Department, San Diego City Attorney’s Office, San Diego County District Attorney’s Office, San Diego County Probation Department, San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, San Diego Police Department, Southwest Border High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of California. Even the Naval Criminal Investigative Service lent a hand. The sheer scale and scope of this operation underscored the gravity of the situation at hand and the determination of all involved to bring those responsible to justice. It was an honor to be part of such a dedicated team, working tirelessly towards a common goal, and I am confident that our efforts will make a significant impact in the fight against crime.

Every year, San Diego Comic-Con – an event focused on comics and pop culture – attracts over 100,000 enthusiasts to the region.
