14 Years Ago, Andrew Scott Gave Us Chills as Jim Moriarty in ‘Sherlock’

As a longtime fan of captivating performances, I must say that Andrew Scott has been a consistent delight to watch over the years. From his chilling portrayal of Jim Moriarty in Sherlock to his heartwarming turn as the “hot priest” in Fleabag, he’s shown an incredible range that leaves me eagerly anticipating his next role.

As a longtime fan of British television, I must say that Andrew Scott has left quite an impression on me with his chameleonic acting skills. From his Emmy-nominated performance as the titular antihero in Netflix’s “Ripley” to his memorable role as Jim Moriarty on BBC/Masterpiece Theatre’s “Sherlock,” it is clear that Scott has a knack for portraying complex, multi-dimensional characters.

Moriarty played mind games with Sherlock Holmes, setting him on a high-stakes detective chase through London, culminating in a near explosion at a swimming pool that also put John Watson in danger. The plot thickened as Moriarty tried to steal the Crown Jewels and Scott’s acting skillfully portrayed the volatile nature of his character’s insanity. The thrilling narrative didn’t end with the 2012 season-two finale “The Reichenbach Fall,” where Moriarty faked his own death as a trick to force Sherlock to leap off a building, supposedly to save his companions.

THR‘s review of the third season highlighted that fans were eager to unravel the cliffhanger’s conclusion with an excitement akin to children on Christmas morning. The reviewer concluded: “It does not disappoint.” In addition, the season finale left viewers stunned as Moriarty, who was believed deceased, reappeared on screens nationwide teasing, “Did you miss me?”

Following his successful portrayal in ‘Sherlock’, which garnered nine Emmys in the limited series/movie categories, Scott’s acting roles have expanded beyond the villainous characters that initially catapulted him to fame. In a recent Roundtable discussion with The Hollywood Reporter, the actor expressed his intention for this diversified career, stating, “The most valuable aspect is being able to play as many different notes as possible.” As a result, there are fans who remember him as Moriarty, but also those who know him from his role as the ‘hot priest’ in Fleabag, or the grieving rideshare driver in Black Mirror’s “Smithereens” episode (earning his first Emmy nomination), or as the lead in 2023’s feature All of Us Strangers, or as Tom Ripley. It’s fortunate that he’s kept himself occupied, or we might have overlooked him altogether.

As a long-time fan of The Hollywood Reporter, I was thrilled when I stumbled upon an article from their August standalone issue. Having been subscribed to this magazine for years, I can attest to its unparalleled insights into the entertainment industry. Intrigued by the tantalizing headline, I immediately clicked on the link to read the full story.
