The Gravedigger first appeared in season two’s “Alien’s In A Spaceship.” The elusive killer had been known for kidnapping victims and burying them alive, only releasing them if she received a massive ransom. And even then, she wasn’t always honest about their survival.
A Miserable Monster
Taffet leveraged her position as a U.S. attorney to manipulate the case against herself, but even with her strategies, it wasn’t sufficient to evade Brennan’s discovery. It didn’t take long for Brennan to piece together the clues, and soon they were able to prosecute the infamous murderer. The Gravedigger made appearances in four episodes of the series before meeting a dramatic end in season six’s “The Bullet In The Brain,” where she was fatally shot by another antagonist from Bones, Jacob Broadsky.
14 Jacob Broadsky aka Hand of God

Jacob Broadsky, also known as “The Hand of God” (portrayed by Arnold Vosloo), is initially depicted as a world-class marksman and assassin who serves as a self-appointed judge, executing those he perceives as wicked. 13 The Gormogon

In the third season, the enigmatic figure known as Gormogon, along with his followers, gained notoriety for the gruesome bite marks found on their victims’ remains. This terrifying cannibalistic serial killer haunted people’s nightmares as he accumulated more and more victims. He was a mastermind of evil, who trained his sinister apprentices to aid him in his wicked deeds. Although he was seldom seen and ultimately met his end, the trail of deaths he left behind stretches long, with the exact number of his victims remaining a mystery.
Crazy Cannibal
The search for The Gormogon persists until the end of season 3, during which the team manages to gather clues about his location from one of his trainees, Dr. Zack Addy. Booth locates him at his residence and ultimately succeeds in eliminating the enigmatic cannibal, thereby concluding another intricate case for Bones.
12 Christopher Pelant
Portrayed by Andrew Leeds
Andrew Leeds, known as Pelant, is widely considered one of the craftiest serial killers throughout the entire series. Interestingly, he didn’t make his debut until season 7. Despite his late introduction, his influence has made him a terrifying antagonist, with Emily Deschanel herself admitting that he leaves a particularly chilling impression. This self-styled “hacktivist” eventually becomes one of the show’s most evasive villains, remaining uncaptured until Temperance Brennan finally apprehends him in season 9.

At first, the antagonist, Pelant, set out to uncover government corruption, but ironically, he fell prey to it himself following his conviction for hacking. Over two seasons, Pelant showcased an uncanny intellect, continually eluding the Jeffersonian team while even concocting a plot to frame our protagonist, Brennan, for murder. This treacherous act forced Brennan into hiding and disrupted her engagement to Booth. Determined to bring Pelant to justice, Brennan swore vengeance and pledged to put an end to his reign of terror once and for all. In the climactic finale, Pelant, a ruthless criminal responsible for numerous deaths, met his match when he was fatally shot by Brennan – finally delivering her long-awaited retribution.
11 Howard Epps
Portrayed by heath Freeman
In the first season of Bones, I found myself introduced as Epps, the chilling serial killer who made his debut in the episode “A Man on Death Row.” As a brilliant, yet twisted individual, I initially caught the attention of Booth and Brennan when my attorney tried to save me from execution. Regrettably, this merely served to highlight the trail of lives claimed by this ruthless murderer.
Killer on the Run
In prison, Epps orchestrated crimes through an accomplice, demonstrating his capacity for wickedness even while in confinement. Upon escape, he planted perilous hints that threatened several members of the Jeffersonian team. It wasn’t until the end of season two that Booth and Brennan tracked down The Manipulator on the roof of Brennan’s apartment. With no alternative left, Epps chose to jump, almost being rescued by Booth before letting go, plummeting to his demise.
10 Stephanie McNamara aka The Ghost Killer
Portrayed by Kelly Rutherford
Stephanie McNamara, also known as The Ghost Killer (played by Kelly Rutherford), is a secretive murderer whose killings spanned over decades until they were exposed by fellow serial killer Christopher Pelant. Being from a wealthy background allowed her crimes to remain unnoticed for a long time since she could pay off those in power to hide her misdeeds. However, it was Pelant who sparked the obsession within Brennan to identify and bring this new murderer to justice.

The true identity of the Ghost Killer is unveiled following the death of her brother Trent. Before law enforcement could imprison Stephanie, they discovered her own lifeless body. Upon further investigation into her past, they learn that she was indeed the real Ghost Killer. Her family had concealed this grim truth, implicating others for her crimes. However, when the fingernails of her victims were found, it became evident that Stephanie was a far more sinister figure than anyone suspected.
9 Jason Harkness
Portrayed by Andrew James Allen
Andrew James Allen’s character, Harkness, is a young apprentice under the renowned figure, Gormogon, in the celebrated series. However, after being kicked out of six private schools due to violent behavior, Harkness’ efforts at reform are quickly derailed when he gets entangled with Gormogon.
A Dangerous Disciple
Harkness took his devotion to extremes, having a diamond embedded into his teeth. This detail, however unfortunate, proved crucial in apprehending him since he left distinctive marks on his victims, making it easier to trace him. The grotesque cannibal who had stooped so low as to murder and consume an infant was eventually caught, a remarkable achievement given his heinous acts. During his time at large, he claimed two more lives and consumed them. Upon being incarcerated, he fatally stabbed himself in the heart, a morbid tribute to his first encounter with the Gormogon.
8 Dr. Andrew Rigby aka The Cannibal

As a passionate movie buff, let me share my thoughts about an intriguing character: Dr. Rigby, portrayed by Alex Carter, who earned the chilling moniker “The Cannibal” on our favorite TV series. This was the first time we encountered a real-life cannibal in the show’s history. Dr. Rigby is yet another brilliantly cunning killer, almost escaping justice for his gruesome deeds before being outsmarted by the brilliant minds at the Jeffersonian.
Dr. Death
As a follower, I was horrified to learn that the rogue doctor, who had fallen to such depths as cannibalism, claimed at least two lives – Ann Noyer and Adam Langer. However, his deceitful nature didn’t last long, and Brennan and Booth swiftly apprehended him, bringing an end to his reign of terror.
7 Glen Durant
Portrayed by JD Cullum
Among Bones fans, character Durant (played by JD Cullum) is widely disliked due to his actions. He fancies himself a devoted patriot, upholding values treasured by him and his father. However, this devotion led him to orchestrate several murders, cover-ups, and even blackmail high-ranking government officials. He is another skilled manipulator who knows how to leverage influence to achieve his goals. Yet, it doesn’t take long for the Jeffersonian team to start closing in on him.
Blackmailer
As the investigation begins to close in on Durant, he turns against the Jeffersonian team and commits one of the most heinous acts of the show. He kills the beloved Lance Sweets (John Francis Daly) in a death that will be long remembered by fans. His connection to death even goes so far as to be a link to the notorious Ghost Killer where his father had helped to cover up some of the crimes McNamara and her family committed. Thankfully the crew was finally able to get their man and put him behind bars for life.
6 Mihir Roshan aka The Puppeteer
Portrayed by Ravi Kapoor
As “The Puppeteer,” Ravi Kapoor (Roshan) was infamous for his grisly taxidermy of his victims, earning him a place among the most chilling antagonists to grace the series. It wasn’t until season 11 that viewers were introduced to this menacing figure, who left an indelible mark on the show and its investigative team. Over the course of the show, he claimed at least five lives, causing a palpable sense of dread in every episode he graced with his presence.
Getting Personal
In their chase after The Puppeteer, this villain claims another life and mocks Brennan by making the deceased resemble Brennan. This cruel murderer might have slipped away undetected if not for the team being on the brink of identifying Dr. Zack Addy as the culprit. However, it was Zack who narrowly escaped death at Roshan’s hands, only for Booth to intervene and ultimately end The Puppeteer’s reign of terror forever.
5 Roger Flender aka The Deity
Portrayed by Jason Gray-Sanford
In the TV series’ twelve-season span, Flender (Jason Gray-Stanford), infamously called The Deity, was yet another ritualistic murderer that Bones and Booth successfully halted. This moniker came from the emblem he etched onto his victims’ chests. At first glance, he presented himself as a benevolent baker, even hiring ex-convicts for his bakery. However, beneath this friendly facade, he considered his workers to be his personal disciples. Anyone who dared to defy him or his associates was met with a deadly end.
Evil Baker
The first instance of murder occurred on Flender’s part following his nephew’s death from a drug overdose. In response, he targeted and killed Leonard Barnes, his nephew’s superior. It seemed that Flender perceived himself as acting for the well-being of those dear to him, but as the killings escalated, it was left to the Jeffersonian team to halt his rampage. Fortunately, they succeeded, and he received a life sentence in prison during season ten’s “The Verdict in the Victims.
4 Peter Geller aka The Killer Clown
Portrayed by Nathan Anderson
Peter Geller (Nathan Anderson) makes his appearance in Bones as The Killer Clown. Anderson’s performance includes him in the long line of evil clowns seen on TV and film. A character so harrowing that he can kill his victims through fear alone, it is no question that he deserves to be included in the list of the worst villains to appear on the show.
A Sick Halloween-Inspired Ritual
In a chilling twist, the notorious Clown Slayer went to great lengths, even anesthetizing his unfortunate targets and transforming them into Halloween ornaments, all while they were still alive. The final image seared into their minds was that of him in his terrifying clown getup. This enigmatic clown is said to have taken only two lives before meeting his end at the hands of Booth.
3 Kevin Hollings aka The Keymaster
Portrayed by Greg Ellis
Greg Ellis’s character, Hollings, earned the moniker “The Keymaster” in a chilling manner – he plucked out his victims’ eyes using a key. This gruesome act was just the beginning for Hollings, who went on to commit a brutal double homicide of two women. Fortunately, Jamie Kenton managed to apprehend him before he stood trial for his second murder.
Brought Down by Another Bad Guy
Although Kenton wasn’t entirely a hero, he managed to prevent Hollings from carrying out further gruesome killings. Since Kenton had been found not guilty of his initial murder charge, there was no guarantee he would face imprisonment. Much like Hollings, who considered himself a spiritual assassin, believing the keys held the power to capture souls of victims, he is another vile killer. Despite not being apprehended by Booth and Bones in this instance, Hollings eventually received his final comeuppance.
2 Richard Benoit
Portrayed by Giancarlo Esposito
In New Orleans, Benoit (Giancarlo Esposito) ran a voodoo shop. This character, who was involved in dark and mysterious acts, came close to ending Brennan’s life during an encounter that left her with a broken wrist. Miraculously, she managed to flee. Later, after suffering from amnesia following these events, Benoit exploited his memory loss to falsely accuse Brennan of his initial murder.
Voodoo Killer
On the run, Benoit managed to escape arrest and ended up killing a total of four individuals. However, he was eventually caught and put behind bars. In his final attempt to bring harm to Brennan, Benoit tried to place a curse on her. But as usual, Brennan remained quick-witted, jabbed him in the eyes to halt his actions. Despite nearly losing control of the situation, Brennan managed to keep Benoit at arm’s length throughout the ordeal.
1 Mark Kovac
Portrayed by Gerardo Celasco
Gerardo Celasco’s character, Kovac, harbored a long-standing grudge against Booth ever since he was six years old. Born to a Serbian warlord, Kovac witnessed the moment when Booth took his father’s life. This event marked him deeply, and as he grew older, Kovac swore revenge. In pursuit of vengeance, Kovac honed his skills in the field of explosives, using them to come dangerously close on multiple occasions to taking out both Booth and Brennan.
Getting His Revenge
Kovac took violent actions to the point of explosively attacking the Jeffersonian Institute. The structure had to be vacated immediately, and Kovac came close to eliminating the team. Fueled by vengeance, Kovac later engaged in a firefight with Booth and Brennan. However, Booth’s exceptional marksmanship skills were put to use again when he fatally shot Kovac, ending their confrontation for good. Despite being innocent at the time of his father’s demise, Kovac was far from it as he matured.
