As a dedicated follower of Bollywood and a student of human dynamics, I cannot help but marvel at the anecdotes that emerge from behind the scenes of our beloved films. Today, as we celebrate 20 years of Veer-Zaara, I find myself reminiscing about the charming tale of Shah Rukh Khan’s struggle to call Rani Mukerji “beti” in the film.
20 years ago today, on November 12, 2024, the heartwarming romantic movie Veer-Zaara, featuring Shah Rukh Khan and Preity Zinta as the leads, celebrated its anniversary. This timeless Bollywood film is renowned for being one of the greatest romantic movies ever made. It’s fascinating to look back at the moment when SRK admitted that it was challenging for him to address Rani Mukerji as ‘beti’ (daughter) in the movie, as this upset Yash Chopra.
In an interview with India-West, Shah Rukh Khan shared that his mindset remained youthful even at over fifty, due to his frequent interaction with his kids. He also mentioned that portraying younger characters came more naturally to him than older ones. Khan openly admitted that it was challenging for him to play a 60-year-old man in Veer-Zaara.
In a scene I’m remembering, Shah Rukh mentioned that it took more than ten tries to address Rani Mukerji as ‘daughter’ in our movie because it was difficult for me, her attorney character, to call her that.
SRK explained how Yash Chopra responded, stating, “Rani would chuckle and protest, ‘Shah, don’t address me like that!’ This made Yash Chopra become annoyed and call for a wrap.
Today, Yash Raj Films’ official account marked the 20th anniversary of Veer-Zaara with a unique post. This special occasion was commemorated through a video clip featuring memorable moments from the romantic saga.
