2022 Thriller ‘Fall’ Has Become a Top 10 Hit on Streaming

The psychological horror-thriller “Fall,” featuring Grace Caroline Currey from “Shazam!” and Virginia Gardner known for the “Beautiful” movie series, has been a streaming success. The movie continues to rank among the most viewed on Hulu, indicating it’s not slowing down its ascent towards the peak of popularity. Quite ironic given the film’s suspenseful storyline.

At this moment, the movie “Fall” is holding the fifth position in Hulu’s Top 10 Movies. This film was directed by Scott Mann, an emerging director who collaborated on the script with Jonathan Frank. The main characters are played by Currey and Gardner alongside Jeffrey Dean Morgan from “The Walking Dead”, Mason Gooding from “Scream”, as well as Darrell Dennis and Jasper Cole in supporting roles. Essentially, “Fall” tells the story of two friends, Becky and Shiloh, who end up stranded at the summit of a towering, rusty broadcasting tower, with no means to reach someone or descend.

On a budget of just $3 million, this film turned out to be a significant success at the box office, raking in more than $21 million. Critics appreciated it as well, giving it a 79% rating on Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer. The audience score, or the Popcornmeter, also stands high at 79%.

When it first came out, critics admired the acting of the two main actors, who chose not to use stunt doubles and performed all their own stunts instead, despite having a rather simplistic storyline. However, Currey and Gardner deliver outstanding performances, particularly as the plot takes an unexpected turn that will leave you in awe. You won’t believe it!

In making the movie, it was crucial for the production team to find a way to make it appear genuine without endangering the actors or over-relying on stunt doubles. Initially, green screens seemed like the best option, but they ultimately decided that approach would look unconvincing. Instead, they constructed the tower’s peak and the small living space where the women reside atop a mountain. This setup provided an illusion with wide shots, ensuring the actors were never in danger.

The movie’s popularity, noticeably after it was streamed on Netflix, caught the interest of producers who perceived a chance for a follow-up. In fact, as early as 2023, not just one but two sequels were officially announced! Several cast members from the original film will be reprising their roles, and they planned to begin filming in 2024.

No Green Screens But…

Fall
was one of the first Hollywood films that went through a fairly controversial post-production process. The film looked great, but VFX shots were necessary to tweak a few things. Nevertheless, distributor Lionsgate Films requested more changes:
the film had to go from an R rating to PG-13

. The only way the MPAA would change the rating was if the profanity was taken down a notch. The F-bombs were excessive, and Mann decided that reshoots were not an option.
He decided to use technology
, and his own company was in charge of it.

Mann’s joint venture, Perfect AI, excels in applying advanced deepfake techniques to modify media content. It’s through this method they ingeniously inserted colloquial expressions like “freaking” into the actors’ dialogues, thereby rescuing the project. This technology isn’t limited to English productions; it allows actors to deliver lines in their native tongues, creating an authentic feel despite the multilingual approach.
