The Marvel Cinematic Universe, in particular, has experienced an unprecedented surge in popularity over the last decade, transforming comic books, muscular actors sporting outlandish spandex, and uninspiring villains into must-haves for even the most casual of cinema enthusiasts. Despite this genre’s decline over the years, with studios seemingly more focused on financial gains than compelling narratives, many still held out hope that 2024 would mark a resurgence for superheroes. Even films like Deadpool and Wolverine, which raked in massive box office earnings, were not immune to criticism from the discerning few.

It’s no surprise that Deadpool & Wolverine was the highest-rated among 2024’s releases, but unfortunately, it seems like this could be the poorest year for superhero movies yet. Remarkably, none of the 2024 superhero films received a ‘fresh’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes, apart from the Deadpool sequel. With Marvel Studios delaying their 2024 release schedule, only six significant comic book movies were launched this year, and most of them failed to impress critics.
In a stellar showdown on Rotten Tomatoes, Deadpool & Wolverine took the crown as the top comic book film of the year with an impressive 78% critics’ score. However, there’s a significant drop-off to the runner-up: Venom: The Last Dance, which scored a mere 41%. If you thought that was underwhelming, brace yourself for the remaining contenders. Joker: Folie à Deux came in third with 31%, followed by the questionable The Crow remake at 22%. Kraven the Hunter clocked in fourth at 15%, but it’s Madame Web that brings up the rear as the worst comic book movie of the year, managing a dismal 11% rating.
