2023 is here, and with it comes another wave of movies aiming to dominate the cinematic landscape. Given the impact of last year’s writers’ and actors’ strikes, which pushed back several high-profile films, this year will see the release of postponed blockbusters such as “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning”.
2025 could be a pivotal and thrilling year for the movie world as it faces changes in mainstream Hollywood. To help you get ready, we’ll examine the most anticipated films coming up next year, make predictions about potential blockbusters, and discuss why they might succeed.
James Gunn’s ‘Superman’ Needs to Hit Big
This Will Kickstart the DCU
In 2025, no movie is expected to surpass the anticipated success of James Gunn’s Superman. The once-reliable box office dominance of comic book adaptations has waned, and among these, DC Comics has suffered a significant blow as most of their recent productions have underperformed, with only 2022’s The Batman standing out as a notable exception.
Given that Superman is a fresh start, it’s not an exaggeration to say that it aims to reignite interest in the main character once more. With James Gunn’s reputation in this genre, it remains to be seen if it can combat the growing apathy towards superheroes among the audience. Only time will tell.
Will the Next ‘Mission: Impossible’ Prove a Comeback?
The Franchise Needs a Win
Looking back now, it seems the “Barbenheimer” effect was too strong even for Tom Cruise to overcome; despite Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning performing well overall, its release coincided with a highly anticipated double feature of our generation. However, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning finds itself in a more favorable position this time, enjoying at least two weekends without significant competition to help it dominate.
Of course, we plan to attend on the opening day, because there’s nothing quite like enjoying Tom Cruise’s action-packed stunts or death-defying feats for our amusement. Without a doubt, Cruise revitalized the movie theater experience following COVID with Top Gun: Maverick, but we’ll have to wait and see if that success carries over here too.
What Other Trends Does 2025 Have to Offer?
It’s a Big Year for the MCU and Sequels
2024 had been a quiet year for Marvel on the big screen, but 2025 is set to change that dramatically. Among their three upcoming films, The Fantastic Four: First Footsteps promises to be the most significant, as it aims to deliver long-overdue justice to its title characters following three previous unsuccessful adaptations on screen. Interestingly, the next two Avengers sequels will build directly upon this film’s events. If The Fantastic Four can generate excitement for upcoming stories like Doomsday and Secret Wars, Marvel Studios may be back on a successful trajectory; otherwise, the next few years could prove challenging.
Sequels are poised to take over the upcoming year once more, following the remarkable triumph of Wicked in 2023. The final installment, Wicked: For Good, due out in 2025, appears to be as much a surefire success as any other film. In 2022, Avatar: The Way of Water had to demonstrate that its series was still thriving, but it surpassed expectations spectacularly, leaving little doubt that Avatar: Fire and Ash will follow suit. With the public’s enduring fascination with dinosaurs, it’s only natural that Jurassic World Rebirth will draw audiences back to cinemas.
Independent films often carry a degree of risk due to their non-franchise status, but they can still be profitable. For instance, movies like music biopics continue to earn money, and the upcoming film about Michael Jackson, despite potentially rekindling discussions on his legacy, will likely attract his fans to the cinema. Meanwhile, Joseph Kosinski, director of ‘Top Gun: Maverick’, is venturing into racing-themed filmmaking with ‘F1’. However, its reported $300 million budget raises questions about its financial stability.
Nevertheless, the film by Paul Thomas Anderson, currently without a title, remains uncertain. Despite his impressive body of work, his movies have rarely been box office hits. Warner Bros., however, showed faith in him, allocating over $100 million due to the presence of Leonardo DiCaprio. The question is, will this investment prove worthwhile?
