2025 Oscars: Coralie Fargeat Gets Sole Female Best Director Nod

In the current year, Coralie Fargeat, a woman director, received a nomination from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for her film titled “The Substance“.

On Thursday’s schedule, Payal Kapadia, the director of “All We Imagine as Light“, was unfortunately not included. However, Fargeat did receive a nomination for best original screenplay.

For a considerable time, the Academy has faced criticism due to the scarcity of female directors being recognized for their work. In the past, the Academy had only acknowledged nine women (eight individual women, with Jane Campion receiving nominations twice) in the Best Director category, and just three have emerged victorious. Among these exceptional women are Lina Wertmüller, Sofia Coppola, Kathryn Bigelow, Greta Gerwig, Emerald Fennell, Chloé Zhao, Justine Triet, and once again Jane Campion. These trailblazers represent the few female directors who have been recognized in the one-hundred-year span of the Academy Awards. Notably, Campion, Zhao, and Bigelow are those who claimed the award.

In the previous year, Triet was the sole female nominee for the film “Anatomy of a Fall“. The year preceding that, no female director was recognized with a nomination, while two years prior to that, Campion claimed victory in this category. However, in 2021, both Zhao and Fennell were nominated, with Zhao ultimately winning the award.

2021 saw Fargeat and Kapadia being recognized by the Golden Globes too, but it was Corbet who took home the prize for Best Director this time around. Interestingly, only three women have ever won this prestigious award in the history of the Globes – Barbra Streisand, Zhao, and Campion. Other remarkable directors like Bigelow, Ava DuVernay, Regina King, Fennell, Gerwig, and Celine Song were all nominated but didn’t claim the trophy this year.
