Through her portrayal of a tormented nightclub performer, Isabella Rossellini rose to stardom. However, it was by taking on the role of a curious nun that she eventually earned an Academy Award.
Rossellini got her initial Oscar nomination last Thursday, earning a nod in the best supporting actress category for her portrayal of Sister Agnes in the Vatican-set suspense film “Conclave”. She’s up against Ariana Grande for “Wicked”, Monica Barbaro for “A Complete Unknown”, Felicity Jones for “The Brutalist”, and Zoe Saldaña for “Emilia Pérez” in this year’s competition.
Both of Rossellini’s parents were nominated for Oscars – Ingrid Bergman, her mother, was nominated an astonishing 7 times and won the award for Best Actress three times, while Roberto Rossellini, her father, received a nomination for screenwriting in 1950. However, it wasn’t until nearly 40 years later that this ‘nepo-star’ turned her sudden fame into an Academy Award recognition.
(Note: ‘Nepo-baby’ is slang for a celebrity child who benefits from their family connections in the entertainment industry. In this context, it’s used humorously as Rossellini had her success before receiving an Oscar.)
In the memorable performance of Rossellini as tormented singer Dorothy Vallens in David Lynch’s 1986 film, Blue Velvet, she earned an Independent Spirit Award for Best Female Lead. However, the controversial and unsettling nature of the movie was deemed too intense by the Oscars, resulting in only a nomination for best director for Lynch. Oliver Stone won that category for Platoon instead.
Over the subsequent years, Rossellini has built a distinctive film career, transitioning between major productions – such as Robert Zemeckis’ “Death Becomes Her” (1992) and Peter Weir’s “Fearless” (1993) – and independent films by notable directors like Peter Greenaway (“The Tulse Luper Suitcases”, 2003), Guy Maddin (“Brand Upon the Brain!”, 2006), and Alice Rohrwacher (“La chimera”, 2023). She ventured into directing herself for the amusing short series “Green Porno”, “Seduce Me”, and “Mammas”, where she portrayed various animal characters, including a nurturing worm and an amorous firefly.
A month ago, the European Film Academy honored the 72-year-old filmmaker by bestowing upon her a Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of her significant impact on international cinema.
Rossellini’s Oscar glory has been decades in the making and 2025 might just be her year.
