Movies such as “Superbad” follow the conventional structure of crude sex comedies yet infuse it with an additional layer of depth. Unlike many previous sex comedies featuring young characters exploring this new territory for the first time, older films tended to merely pile on more raunchy scenes for humor. However, “Superbad” transforms the sex comedy genre from a mere setup into something profound and meaningful. This film is not just about sexual escapades; it’s a heartfelt coming-of-age tale exploring friendship, letting go of youth, and finding one’s identity in life. Essentially, “Superbad” is a raunchy sex comedy with emotional depth.
As a die-hard movie enthusiast, I’d say, “Starring Jonah Hill and Michael Cera, among others, ‘Superbad’ takes you on a rollercoaster ride of all the misfortunes imaginable, culminating in a night that leaves an indelible mark on their lives. When it comes to top-tier teen comedies like ‘Superbad’, there are numerous choices, ranging from similar films dealing with relationships and humor, to more mature movies featuring many of the cast members. Additionally, there are movies that capture the essence of saying goodbye to high school and everything that comes with it.
25. Forgetting Sarah Marshall (2008)
Jason Segal Attempts To Move On By Going To Hawaii For Vacation
Although “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” is a romantic comedy instead of a teen comedy, it still offers plenty of appeal for anyone fond of “Superbad”. Despite its often crude humor, the film manages to be surprisingly heartfelt by the end, aligning more with comedies like “Knocked Up” or “The 40-Year-Old Virgin”, which revolve around adults navigating love and romance in an unconventional manner.
The story centers on Peter Bretter, played by Jason Segel, who decides to take a trip to Hawaii to move on from his past relationship. However, fate has other plans as he unexpectedly encounters his ex at the same resort. Meanwhile, he finds himself falling for the charming receptionist. This entertaining plot is strengthened by the outstanding camaraderie among its actors, with Jason Segel and Mila Kunis particularly shining. Additionally, Jonah Hill delivers a laugh-out-loud performance in a minor role that leaves a lasting impression throughout the film.
24. Role Models (2008)
Two Men Are Paired With Children To Be Their “Role Models” For Community Service
In the movie “Role Models,” two energy drink salesmen are tasked with 150 hours of community service by working with a program that pairs kids with adult mentors. This comedy is incredibly funny, making full use of its unique concept. Starring Paul Rudd and Seann William Scott, the film sees Scott reprising his Stifler persona and Rudd playing his usual charismatic but slightly obnoxious character.
In contrast to the party-centric, sexually charged narrative of Superbad, Role Models instead highlights the heartfelt relationships among its characters. Notably, Christopher Mintz-Plasse delivers an impressive performance reminiscent of his role as McLovin in Superbad. The film also includes a substantial amount of humor derived from crude language, even though it may not be as edgy. Paul Rudd shines brightly in this production, demonstrating his versatility as a leading actor.
23. Everybody Wants Some!! (2016)
A Spiritual Sequel To Dazed And Confused
Richard Linklater is widely recognized for his mastery in directing films that revolve around casual socializing, and “Everybody Wants Some!!” seamlessly carries on this tradition, serving as something of a spiritual successor to “Dazed and Confused.” As the 1980s commence, a band of college baseball players are seen relishing their final days of freedom before school starts, primarily engaging in attempts to meet women and indulging in parties. This film aligns nicely with what “Superbad” portrays, but at a more relaxed tempo; it doesn’t push its characters into overly dramatic or chaotic situations.
In essence, the character development in the movie “Everybody Wants Some!!”, similar to much of Richard Linklater’s body of work, is widely regarded as one of its standout features. Its humor can be quite crude, rivaling that of “Superbad”, but no one surpasses Seth in this regard. The film concludes with a heartwarming and profound moment, making it an ideal pair with “Superbad”. It also does an excellent job of portraying the 1980s era authentically.
22. Project X (2012)
Three Friends Attempt To Throw The Greatest Party Of All Time
Initially, found-footage films were becoming a significant trend in cinema, and the movie “Project X” endeavored to incorporate that filmmaking technique into the teen comedy genre. Consequently, “Project X” is an uncontrollable rollercoaster ride from start to finish, with the chaos escalating as the party spirals out of control. Akin to “Superbad,” “Project X” follows three friends eager for a memorable night out; however, unlike Seth, Evan, and McLovin, these friends opt to host their own bash.
Although the personalities of the characters in Project X may not be as fully developed as those in Superbad, this movie pushes teen comedy to outrageous extremes, and manages to depict one of the most chaotic parties ever filmed within the genre. The use of found-footage style in Project X adds a unique touch to it, making it stand out from other teen comedies, even though it doesn’t quite match the comedic brilliance exhibited by Superbad.
21. 21 Jump Street (2012)
Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum Team Up In This Buddy-Cop High School Comedy
Jonah Hill’s breakout role in Superbad was well-deserved, with his portrayal of Seth being nothing short of fantastic. His comedic delivery is enchanting, making the movie an absolute delight to watch. In a different venture, 21 Jump Street showcased Jonah Hill’s comedic prowess once again. Partnered with Channing Tatum, they reimagined an 80s teen drama as a hilarious action comedy that became one of the most successful comedies in recent years. The duo share a remarkable chemistry, and their contrasting acting styles create a captivating dynamic throughout the film.
21 Jump Street narrates the story of two police officers who blunder an operation and are relocated to the undercover unit. Assuming the roles of high school siblings, they aim to unmask the culprit distributing a novel drug within the school’s premises. While it may not reach the same level of raunchiness as Superbad, 21 Jump Street remains side-splittingly funny, with Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum delivering performances that are nothing short of uproarious.
20. Bottoms (2023)
Two High School Girls Set Up A Fight Club To Hook Up With Cheerleaders
The film “Superbad” significantly rejuvenated the R-rated teen comedy genre, but eventually saw a decline in popularity. However, the upcoming movie “Bottoms” might serve to reinvigorate the genre once more. Starring Rachel Sennott and Ayo Edebiri, this hilarious cast portrays two high school students who initiate a fight club with the ultimate goal of dating cheerleaders. The audacious and satirical plot establishes a carefree comedy environment that doesn’t shy away from its ridiculous humor, fully committing to its outlandish jokes.
Experiencing a delightful blend of nostalgia and novelty, I find myself captivated by this movie. It’s garnered an impressive response from both critics and viewers, with the South by Southwest crowd even nominating it for their esteemed Audience Award. The GLAAD Media Awards also recognized its excellence, bestowing upon it the accolade of Outstanding Film – Wide Release. Furthermore, the Independent Spirit Awards nominated it for Best Screenplay, while Marshawn Lynch received a nod in the Breakthrough Performance category.
19. Adventureland (2009)
Young Adults Come Of Age While Working At An Amusement Park
In numerous aspects, “Adventureland” appears to be a spiritual successor to “Superbad“, but with a more somber atmosphere. Similar to “Superbad“, it was directed by Greg Mottola and featured actors like Bill Hader and Martin Starr. The story unfolds in the 1980s, following Jesse Eisenberg as a young man who spends his summer before college working at an amusement park.
This film perfectly encapsulates the excitement of young adults on the brink of a significant life transition, filled with partying and blossoming romances. Jesse Eisenberg skillfully employs the same awkward yet endearing comedic vibe Michael Cera exhibited in “Superbad.” The movie’s secondary cast is equally impressive, with Kristen Stewart and Ryan Reynolds delivering standout performances. Additionally, the music was phenomenal, featuring hits from artists like David Bowie, INXS, the New York Dolls, and others that truly captured the spirit of the era.
18. No Hard Feelings (2023)
A Woman Agrees To Help A Guy Lose His Virginity
As a cinephile, I must confess that the plotline of high school students eagerly pursuing their first amorous encounters before college is a trope often seen in adolescent comedies. However, “No Hard Feelings” manages to take this familiar concept and steer it into uncharted territories. In this film, Jennifer Lawrence portrays an aimless and reckless young woman who, surprisingly, responds to an ad placed by parents seeking someone to “date” their socially awkward son. While this premise may be off-putting for some, it results in a side-splitting, R-rated throwback comedy that showcases Lawrence’s exceptional comedic timing and her wholehearted commitment to the outrageous character she plays.
In addition to its success with critical acclaim, “No Hard Feelings” showcases an outstanding debut from Andrew Barth Feldman. The movie is bold and pushes boundaries, with Lawrence fully committing to the narrative. This leads to a film that garnered numerous favorable reviews from critics, even earning Lawrence a Golden Globes nomination for Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical Motion Picture. Moreover, Lawrence was also honored with the Comedy Movie Star of the Year Award at the People’s Choice Awards.
17. The 40-Year-Old Virgin (2004)
Steve Carell Stars As The Titular Virgin
In the realm of comedy films popular during that time, Superbad embodied Judd Apatow’s distinctive comedic style. Interestingly, it was The 40-Year-Old Virgin that initiated this trend and marked Apatow’s directorial debut. Despite the adult setting, the movie revolves around underdogs seeking to inject some thrill into their social circles. Steve Carell plays a middle-aged man who has never had sexual intercourse, prompting his colleagues to assist him in checking that off his life’s to-do list.
This film’s humor, both crude and comical, keeps the laughs flowing continuously, such as the iconic chest-waxing scene from “The 40-Year-Old Virgin.” Yet, Steve Carell’s endearing portrayal adds a significant amount of emotional depth to the movie. Pioneering this genre once more, this particular film paved the way for productions like “Knocked Up,” “This is 40,” “Pineapple Express,” and even the movie “Superbad” itself.
16. The Hangover (2009)
The Aftermath Of A Wild Night Of Partying
In the wave of R-rated comedies that dominated the late 2000s, it was Todd Phillips’ “The Hangover” that stood out as one of the highest-grossing R-rated films ever made. Unlike other comedies that tag along on the boozy escapades with the characters, this movie focuses on the repercussions. For me, as a movie buff, it was a different kind of laugh riot. While movies like “Superbad” journey through the drunken night with the characters, “The Hangover” takes us on a rollercoaster ride of what happens after – a missing groom and a bachelor party gone wild in Las Vegas.
Adding an air of intrigue to the film, the movie became a Golden Globe winner in the Best Comedy category. “The Hangover” surpassed the popularity of “Superbad,” ultimately becoming the highest-grossing R-rated comedy ever upon its release, shattering the record set by “Beverly Hills Cop.
15. The Night Before (2015)
Three Friends Start To Grow Apart At Christmas
In a different yet familiar vein to the comedy “Superbad,” “The Night Before” can be seen as a sort of spiritual successor, infused with holiday spirit. This film stars Seth Rogen, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Anthony Mackie as a trio of friends who embark on their annual Christmas Eve adventure in search of an elusive Christmas party. Much like “Superbad,” the movie revolves around similar themes, with the storyline chronicling one unforgettable night in the lives of these three close friends, where their friendship is put to the test.
In addition, this storyline explores the motif of longtime companions drifting apart and pursuing separate paths, albeit these characters are at a more mature stage in life during the narrative. However, it delves into individuals who come to terms with the necessity of focusing on their personal lives rather than maintaining an overly close bond with friends. Furthermore, it continues to offer R-rated humor and holiday cheer, while Seth Rogen serves as the link between the two movies by performing in both productions.
14. Pineapple Express (2008)
Two Stoners Go On The Run From Corrupt Cops & Hitmen
Seth Rogen often stars in various comedies, and many of them feature characters similar to those found in “Superbad.” In the 2008 film comedy “Pineapple Express,” the main characters were older, but they remained misfit underdogs struggling to find their place in life. This action-comedy revolved around a drug dealer and one of his clients (portrayed by Rogen and James Franco), who had to evade a corrupt police officer and numerous assassins after witnessing a murder while on the run.
The film features several former cast members from “Superbad” in minor roles, preserving its distinctly crude humor. Notably, it was penned by Judd Apatow, Seth Rogen, and Evan Goldberg – the same team behind “Superbad,” who also based the main characters on themselves. This connection is understandable given that Apatow produced “Superbad” as well, linking these two bawdy comedies closely together.
13. Easy A (2010)
A Teen Taunts Her School With Her Sexuality
Easy A demonstrates that one doesn’t need to be male to star in a risqué sex comedy. What sets Easy A apart is that the main character, Olive (played by Emma Stone), though falsely accused of promiscuity by her peers, was actually innocent. However, enraged by these accusations, Olive decided to act out the role publicly as a form of retaliation against her classmates’ expectations. She began dressing suggestively and even paid boys to spread rumors about her alleged promiscuity.
The film drew inspiration from The Scarlet Letter, yet it also acknowledged works that impacted Superbad, notably Sixteen Candles and Say Anything. This tribute is reflected in scenes reminiscent of those movies, like substituting a guy with a boombox for one with a small mobile device, and depicting the new couple riding off on a lawnmower similar to a scene from a riding mower. The movie became financially successful and Emma Stone garnered a Golden Globe award for her acting performance.
12. Knocked Up (2007)
A Slacker Gets A Woman Pregnant After A One-Night Stand
Prior to Seth Rogen directing his own films, he was part of Judd Apatow’s movie and television realm. In 2007, he starred in the comedy “Knocked Up,” alongside Katherine Heigl from “ER.” In this movie, Rogen portrays a laid-back guy who has a one-night stand with someone perceived as out of his reach. However, when she becomes pregnant, they must confront the implications and determine whether they can share a life together or not.
It’s quite fascinating to witness Jonah Hill’s character from “Superbad” mature and find himself in a comparable predicament. Similarly, it’s enjoyable to observe the shift from the aimless, endearing failure in “Knocked Up” to the police officer who wants to ensure McLovin enjoys himself in “Superbad”. It’s almost unbelievable that these two films, “Knocked Up” and “Superbad”, were released in the same year, showcasing the exceptional skill of Rogen (both as an actor and writer) and Apatow (as a director and producer) during their peak in comedy productions.
11. Old School (2003)
Three Middle-Aged Friends Start A College Fraternity
Prior to crafting one of the most financially successful R-rated film series ever, The Hangover, Todd Phillips previously helmed the buddy comedy movie Old School. In this film, Luke Wilson, Will Ferrell, and Vince Vaughn portrayed three old college friends experiencing a midlife crisis. To escape their mundane lives, they establish their own fraternity after Wilson’s character Mitch moves into a property that was rezoned as part of the university campus, eventually making it the most popular party spot on campus.
The film bears many resemblances to “Superbad,” notably in its depiction of raucous party scenes and unforeseen consequences. Unlike “Superbad” where high school students go to parties for fun, “Old School” follows middle-aged men who choose to party with college students, leading to similar mishaps and blunders. Moreover, it’s entertaining to observe Jeremy Piven in his role as a college authority figure after portraying the rebellious college student in “PCU” years ago.
10. Good Boys (2019)
Middle-School Kids Encounter Adult Situations
In essence, “Good Boys” is like if the characters from “Superbad” were a few years younger and found themselves in situations that were too mature for them even to witness in a theater without an adult, as portrayed in this movie. The creators of “Superbad”, Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, are also behind “Good Boys”. The story revolves around three sixth-grade boys aiming to attend a party with their cool classmates, but they encounter difficulties, grow apart, and eventually reconnect.
This film comes incredibly near to emulating the spirit of “Superbad,” yet it features middle schoolers instead of college students experiencing adult predicaments. It’s amusing to watch this band of youngsters encounter various difficulties, especially since they’re on their last hurrah before moving on to high school. However, witnessing pre-teens navigate similar situations can be awkwardly entertaining, making for a surprising R-rated comedy that garnered positive critical acclaim and proved successful at the box office.
9. Booksmart (2019)
Two High School Friends Break All The Rules Before Graduation
What makes Superbad stand out isn’t just its crude and humorously lowbrow humor; it’s the tender and sincere vibe that permeates the film. For those seeking films similar to Superbad, brimming with heart, look no further than Booksmart, directed by Olivia Wilde. This movie is a near-perfect match for Superbad in terms of its narrative structure, retelling the familiar tale of coming-of-age, but with high school girls instead of boys as the protagonists. The story revolves around two high school seniors who have excelled academically but come to the realization that they’ve missed out on the fun aspects of their high school years.
Towards the finale of their high school years, they embarked on a mission to disregard as numerous rules as they could, determined not to miss out on any experiences while maintaining their squeaky-clean images. This tale serves as an apt female reinterpretation of a well-known comedy. The movie garnered the Best First Feature award at the Independent Spirit Awards and is still considered among the top young adult films from the past decade. It also features Beanie Feldstein, Jonah Hill’s sister, in a prominent role, linking it back to Superbad.
8. Blockers (2018)
Parents Set Out To Stop Their Kids From Losing Their Virginity
The fundamental concept of Superbad revolves around three high school seniors aiming to shed their virginity before graduation. In contrast, Blockers follows a similar narrative but presents it from the viewpoint of parents attempting to prevent their daughters from achieving the same milestone. Released in 2018, this movie is another production by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, offering a slight variation on the theme by focusing on the concerned parents instead of the partying high school students.
In one of his initial comedic stints within the WWE, John Cena stars in a film alongside Leslie Mann and Ike Barinholtz, both known for their comedy prowess. Despite their extensive experience, this production was primarily Cena’s, as he skillfully shouldered its weight. His performances in this movie, along with smaller roles in ‘Trainwreck’ and ‘Daddy’s Home,’ demonstrated his comedic abilities, ultimately landing him significant roles in ‘Peacemaker’ directed by James Gunn and the Amazon Prime Video film, ‘Ricky Stanicky.’
7. Dazed And Confused (1993)
The Original High School Party Movie
As a movie enthusiast, I can’t help but reminisce about my favorite coming-of-age film, Richard Linklater’s timeless masterpiece, “Dazed and Confused,” set in the vibrant ’70s. In this nostalgic tale, we follow a group of high school students as they gear up for their last day of freedom before summer, a party that promises an unforgettable night. The seniors are on the verge of leaving, while the freshmen eagerly anticipate their arrival. Matthew McConaughey plays the role of the perennial high schooler who seems to have forever etched his roots in those hallowed halls. The star-studded cast of “Dazed and Confused” is a testament to the film’s prophetic powers, featuring future stars such as Ben Affleck, Jason London, Milla Jovovich, Rory Cochrane, and Adam Goldberg.
As a cinephile who’s always got an eye out for great teenage dramas, I can’t help but recommend “Dazed and Confused” if you’re a fan of “Superbad”. Just like the high school kids in “Superbad”, the characters here are on the brink of leaving their school days behind. However, these kids seem a bit older, but their struggles with the end of school and the impending real world feel strikingly similar between the two films. It’s no wonder that “Dazed and Confused” is still considered one of the best high school movies ever made, even thirty years after its release, cutting across all genres.
6. This Is The End (2013)
Hollywood’s Party Kids Face The Apocalypse
If you’re a fan of the stars from “Superbad”, you’ll definitely enjoy the 2013 comedy, “This is the End”. What makes this movie special is that the actors portray exaggerated, fictionalized versions of themselves, all attending a party when disaster strikes. Notable moments include Michael Cera meeting his grisly end in an obnoxious and arrogant manner, Danny McBride displaying his angry and vengeful side, and James Franco delivering a gloriously over-the-top performance.
The appearances in this film alone make it a must-see for fans of movies similar to Superbad. Both productions share numerous links. Seth Rogen portrays a cop in Superbad, while he plays one of the primary survivors of the apocalypse in This is the End. Michael Cera delivers an amusingly deranged performance, and there’s a clever joke about Jonah Hill being the kindest individual in Hollywood, despite his over-the-top and fake demeanor throughout the movie. Additionally, there are unmissable cameos by Rihanna, Emma Watson, Channing Tatum, and others.
