Five months remain before the premiere of Danny Boyle’s movie titled “28 Years Later“, and yet, star Ralph Fiennes continues tantalizing fans with hints about his character, Dr. Kelson. Contrary to appearances, it seems that this character has layers not immediately apparent in the eagerly awaited sequel set for release on June 20th. In other words, don’t make assumptions based solely on first impressions regarding Dr. Kelson.
In a conversation about the third installment of Boyle’s post-apocalyptic trilogy, Empire magazine discussed the role of Fiennes, who co-stars with Jodie Comer and Aaron Taylor-Johnson. When asked about his character Dr. Kelson, Fiennes advised viewers not to jump to conclusions about whether he’s an ally or a foe, but instead to watch the movie unfold before making assumptions.
He has some rather unconventional perspectives on the world, which might lead people to make certain assumptions about him initially, but they’ll have to wait and see how things unfold.
28 Years Later marks the reappearance of director Danny Boyle and screenwriter Alex Garland in the franchise following their hiatus spanning over two decades, as they stepped back for the 2007 sequel titled 28 Weeks Later. In this installment, those who survived the Rage Virus have learned to coexist with the infected, albeit in a world that still faces its own set of challenges.
For nearly three decades, the Rage Virus has been loose in the world, breaking free from its confines within a medical research facility. In a harshly imposed quarantine zone, certain individuals have managed to survive among the infected. One such community of survivors inhabits a small island linked to the mainland by a heavily guarded bridge. When one member of this group ventures off the island on a perilous journey into the heart of the mainland, they uncover hidden truths, marvels, and terrors that lie beyond their sheltered existence.
Ralph Fiennes Will Have a Bigger Role to Play in ‘The Bone Temple’
28 Years Later marks the beginning of a fresh trilogy of movies, with The Bone Temple set to continue in 2026. Nia DaCosta (known for Candyman and The Marvels) steps into the director’s role for this installment. As before, Garland takes care of the scriptwriting, and Boyle will serve as executive producer. Excitingly, Fiennes’ character will have a more expansive role in the following films, according to Boyle, who hints that the first film is merely the beginning of the storyline for this character.
In a grand manner, he confidently moves ahead in the sequel, as all questions regarding his motives and actions are thoroughly answered.
For those anticipating Cillian Murphy’s return in the upcoming movie “28 Years Later”, it’s important to note that, as per producer Andrew Macdonald, he won’t be appearing in the film. In an interview with Empire, Macdonald mentioned that Murphy wasn’t part of the original movie and expressed hope for a possible reappearance of the character Jim at some point. “28 Years Later” is set to release in cinemas on June 20, 2025, while “The Bone Temple” is expected to premiere in 2026. If you’d like to refresh your memory on the series before the new release, both “28 Days Later” and “28 Weeks Later” are now available for rental or purchase on all Video On Demand platforms.
