The role of a trailer is twofold: first, it stirs excitement about an upcoming film; second, it tells a compact, independent narrative on its own. Successfully achieving both aspects, this particular trailer has garnered acclaim.
At the Golden Trailer Awards, which celebrate the finest trailers annually, the event took place on Thursday. Among all the nominees, the trailer for “28 Years Later” garnered the most accolades, winning awards such as the Don LaFontaine Award for best voice over, the prize for most original trailer, and the top honor of best in show. It was an impressive night for Buddha Jones, the team behind its creation.
It’s significant to point out that the trailer has achieved more than just success; following its premiere, it generated such immense interest that it became the top-watched horror trailer for 2024 and the second-highest-viewed horror trailer ever, trailing only behind ‘It: Chapter Two’. Leveraging this newfound fan base, Sony decided to release the original ’28 Days Later’ digitally in December, giving viewers a chance to familiarize themselves with the movie before the sequel arrives.
Evelyn Brady, head of the Golden Trailer Awards, voiced her praise for the deserving winner. “What a powerfully impactful trailer,” she said. “From its unexpected beginning on Teletubbies to its rapid, chilling visuals synchronized with the haunting recitation of Rudyard Kipling’s poem, it left us cringing – and the haunting audio that lingers in your mind for days didn’t make watching any easier. This trailer is a true masterpiece, and my hats off to the teams at Sony Pictures and Buddha Jones – it gave me sleepless nights. All this year’s winners deserve recognition for their extraordinary skill and innovation.
The specific Rudyard Kipling poem under discussion is titled “Boots” from 1903, portraying the gradual mental breakdown of a foot soldier as he marches. Coupled with the graphic scenes of zombie carnage depicted in the trailer, this creates a mesmerizing and intense experience.
The 28 Years Later Trailer Got Fans Talking
Following the trailer release, fans found themselves intrigued by one specific detail. A zombie in the trailer appeared to be none other than the protagonist from the original 28 Days Later, Murphy’s Jim. Was it actually him? However, their speculations proved to be unfounded as he hadn’t transformed into a zombie between the films.
In the trailer, it turned out that the zombie character was none other than Angus Neill, a renowned art dealer, who director Boyle had chosen to play the emaciated zombie role. Contrary to widespread speculation, Cillian Murphy did not have a part in the film at all. This news left some fans disheartened, while others were glad that Jim was saved from such a gruesome destiny.
28 Years Later introduces new characters from those we initially encountered in Days. Among them are Jodie Comer portraying Isla, Alfie Williams as Spike, their son, and Ralph Fiennes stepping into the role of the enigmatic Dr. Kelson. The narrative unfolds further into a sequel that was filmed concurrently with its predecessor.
28 Years Later will debut in cinemas June 20, 2025.
