Although discussions sparked by Danny Boyle’s film have primarily revolved around the size of Alpha Samson’s prosthetic penis and the shocking ending referencing Jimmy Savile, I believe that the impressive portrayal of Alfie Williams as the character Spike, who has an uncanny ability to evoke empathy, is equally noteworthy.

Since the movie concludes with a suspenseful cliffhanger regarding Spike’s future journey, I find myself eagerly anticipating the upcoming sequel titled “28 Years Later: The Bone Temple“. It’s scheduled for release in early 2026. Plus, fans can rest assured that the sequel won’t suffer from the “Stranger Things” effect when it comes to Spike’s character development.

Alfie Williams’ Spike Is My Favorite Thing About 28 Years Later

I openly acknowledge that unpolished child acting (to put it gently) can spoil an otherwise excellent film for me. Are they too precocious, immature, or stiff? Either way, I don’t want any of it, not implying any disrespect towards the actors. However, from the beginning, Alfie Williams demonstrated a wide range of talents that never faltered during the chaotic action and tragic emotions.

Despite appreciating the intricate world-building, the presence of Alphas, and Boyle’s unique cinematography using iPhone camera arrays, many aspects could be changed without significantly impacting the final product. However, removing Williams from it would be like trying to save a house of cards with a hose. Remarkably, the 14-year-old character will still appear 14 in the upcoming horror movie.

This version retains the original’s meaning and maintains a conversational tone while providing a smoother readability.

The Stranger Things Effect Refers To Younger Cast Members Aging Out Of Roles Due To Extended Productions Or Hiatuses

Despite the fact that individual views about the narrative of “Stranger Things” may vary, it’s worth noting that its fanbase has expressed frustration over the lengthy gaps between the later seasons. This isn’t only due to the wait for new episodes, but also because by the final season, the younger actors will have significantly changed in appearance compared to their initial roles. As a result, they are made to appear younger for each new season.

As a film enthusiast, I can certainly understand and appreciate the natural progression of time in storytelling. If the plot could skip ahead to reflect the characters’ aging process, it would be perfectly fine. However, since the Duffers have crafted their narrative so intricately within the realm of adolescence, which has a finite timeline, this detail feels somewhat awkward (and potentially confusing) – something that might just end up as fodder for amusing memes when Season 5’s irregular release schedule is taken into account.

As a dedicated fan of “28 Years Later,” I can confidently say that concerns about aging characters aren’t an issue with the upcoming sequel, “The Bone Temple.” This is because director Nia DeCosta began filming it right after Danny Boyle finished his work, making it possible for Alfie Williams’ character Spike to remain unchanged. So when we finally get to see this new movie, assuming that’s the plan, Spike should still look just as we remember him.

Throughout the storyline, Spike’s journey is deeply connected to the loss of his innocence due to multiple factors. He bravely explored the mainland, confronting monstrous creatures, but also grappled with the revelation of his father’s unfaithfulness. Moreover, he endured the harsh realities of learning that his mother was terminally ill, followed swiftly by her mysterious passing. To add to this burden, he placed his mother’s skull among others.

Regardless of whether Alfie Williams appeared older, sporting a less stylish haircut to seem younger, “28 Years Later: The Bone Temple” would still have been an impressive production, given the actor’s undeniable talent. Yet, the emotional impact his character arc has on me is significantly connected to the fact that Spike endures these hardships at a youthful age. The advantage of Alfie not having to physically transform to look young maintains my excitement about the role.
