As a devoted fan who’s spent countless hours immersed in the world of television, I must say that the lives of these talented individuals from Dunder Mifflin have been nothing short of captivating! Their journeys beyond the paper company walls are a testament to their versatility and adaptability.
Currently, it’s almost certain that “The Office” will be remembered not just as one of the greatest sitcoms ever produced, but also as a comedy series beloved for repeat viewings and a showcase that catapulted several actors to fame due to their performances in the nine-season phenomenon.
Hey there fellow gamer! You know how much I’ve enjoyed watching the hilarious antics of the Dunder Mifflin crew from The Office, right? Well, did you know that many of these talented actors have graced our screens in other awesome movies and shows too? So, if you’re curious about what more they’ve been up to, let me guide you on where to find them!
Foxcatcher
Steve Carell, who was previously recognized primarily as a comedic actor prior to his portrayal of Michael Scott on The Office, experienced a significant leap in his career following his work there. This boost led to him exploring new avenues, one of which was his chilling performance as the lead in the drama Foxcatcher, a critically acclaimed biographical sports thriller that earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Actor in 2015.
Inside Out
2015 appears to have been a successful year for the cast of The Office, as it marked the release of the highly-acclaimed Pixar film Inside Out. In this movie, Phyllis Smith lent her voice to the character of Sadness. The story revolves around the anthropomorphized emotions of a young girl facing challenging times and became popular enough to warrant a sequel, which is scheduled for 2024.
Away We Go
Among the characters from “The Office,” it’s quite likely that Jim Halpert, portrayed by John Krasinski, is the one most adored by fans. This popularity propelled him into the 2009 romantic road trip movie titled “Away We Go.” This comedy-drama revolves around a couple in their early thirties who are trying to decide where to establish their home before the arrival of their first child. If you haven’t watched it yet, I would strongly recommend giving it a try.
Blades Of Glory
It’s clear that your mind is wondering about Pam. Many people believe that Jenna Fischer’s character, Pam Beesly Halpert, was the soul of the sitcom. Interestingly, she also played a significant role in the ice-skating comedy “Blades of Glory” released in 2007.
The Mindy Project
Though Kelly Kapoor is undeniably a standout character with her over-the-top antics at Dunder Mifflin, Mindy Kaling’s OB/GYN character, Mindy Lahiri, from The Mindy Project, doesn’t share the same level of ridiculousness (completely). Despite being intelligent, amiable, and proficient in her profession, Mindy Lahiri is also brash and superficial, which makes her an enjoyable character to follow.
Bridesmaids
Due to the numerous funny acts by the ensemble cast in the comedy “Bridesmaids”, filled with one-liners, it’s possible that you may have overlooked Ellie Kemper’s role – she played Erin Hannon, the receptionist, but was also Becca, a newlywed member of the bridal party. The eccentricities of the group caused Becca to shed some of her innocence.
Parks And Recreation
Hey there! I’m reminding you about Rashida Jones, remember? The character she played in ‘The Office’, Karen Filippelli, who eventually figured out Jim’s feelings for Pam when they all started working together. But let me tell you, she had a much more substantial role in ‘Parks and Recreation’. Her character, Anne Perkins, was a pretty balanced addition to the eccentric group, often adding a dose of reason to their madness.
Super
It’s unlikely that many people who watched the NBC workplace sitcom thought of any of the characters as superheroes, which is why it’s intriguing that Rainn Wilson, who played Dwight Schrute, has taken on a reading role in Super. This dark comedy tells the story of a short order cook transforming into a masked vigilante, making it worth giving a try at least once.
The Hangover
One time-honored comedy that likely has caught your eye at least once is the 2009 film “The Hangover,” featuring Ed Helms, famously known as Andy Bernard. It’s quite possible that you’ve watched this film not just once but several times, along with its two subsequent sequels.
This Is The End
Infrequently, you’ll encounter apocalyptic horror comedies with an edge of insanity that’s hard to find, and one such example is the 2013 movie “This Is The End“. This film features several well-known personalities playing their own characters, among them is Craig Robinson as Darryl Philbin, attempting to endure a Biblical catastrophe.
Leatherheads
In addition to his work, John Krasinski was involved in the George Clooney-directed football comedy set in 1925 titled “Leatherheads“. Although it wasn’t a major box office success, it provided an early glimpse into Krasinski’s potential on the big screen.
Fresh Off The Boat
As a gamer, I’ve noticed that some characters from my favorite shows sometimes make appearances on others. This is what happened when Angela Kinsey, who played Dwight’s girlfriend Angela in The Office, showed up in Fresh Off the Boat, an ABC family comedy. In Seasons 4 and 5, she appeared as Amy Chestnut, a rival for Jessica Huang.
The Lost City
It’s surprising that Oscar kept working at Dunder Mifflin Scranton, given how he was so professional and free of silliness. Yet, the actor who plays him, Oscar Nuñez, surprisingly took on a quirky role in the 2022 film The Lost City, which brought about much laughter.
The Morning Show
After bidding adieu to “The Office,” I found myself gravitating towards more profound roles. Maintaining my newfound passion, I stepped into the shoes of a disgraced former co-host for the initial two seasons of the captivating show that forms the core of this Apple TV+ series.
The Giant Mechanical Man
So far, none of our cherished “Office” cast members have been involved in what may eventually be recognized as one of the top romantic comedies ever made. However, Jenna Fischer did act in a sweet romantic comedy titled “The Giant Mechanical Man.” In this film, she portrays a zoo employee who finds love with a struggling street performer who is also financially strapped.
Family Switch
Occasionally, all you crave is a light-hearted, enjoyable film for the entire family, and Ed Helms played a part in providing just that with “Family Switch“. This movie, accessible through your Netflix subscription, takes its cue from the classic tale of “Freaky Friday” by interchanging bodies between two parents (alongside their family pet) and their teenage children (including the youngest member of the household).
Galaxy Quest
As a passionate gamer, I’ve often found myself wishing for more crossovers between sci-fi and comedy genres. However, they don’t mix too frequently, but when they do, we’re treated to marvelous films like the timeless “Galaxy Quest.” This iconic piece showcases Rainn Wilson as a charming, somewhat bumbling octopus-like character named Thermian, who almost convinces us he’s human.
Gone Baby Gone
Amy Ryan, who had been an established actor for numerous years, became widely recognized by many due to her Academy Award-nominated performance in the 2007 film “Gone Baby Gone” as the mother of a missing child. This role presented a stark contrast to her beloved character, Holly Flax.
The Bold Type
It’s a bad idea to get involved with your boss; that is, if your boss is like the domineering Jan Levinson, as played by Melora Hardin. However, if your boss is tough but fair and an all-around good human like The Bold Type’s Jacqueline Carlyle, then maybe things won’t go as badly for you as they did for Michael.
Silicon Valley
In the hit series The Office, Zach Woods added an extra dose of quirkiness in his role as Gabe from seasons 6 to 9. However, when it comes to HBO’s Silicon Valley, he provided a sense of security and stability within the comedy’s tech team.
Ocean’s Eight
Apart from “The Mindy Project,” there have been other avenues to see Mindy Kaling’s talent, especially after 2018. She took on the role of jeweler Amita in the crime comedy “Ocean’s Eight,” where she was part of an ensemble cast planning a grand jewelry heist.
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
Ellie Kemper consistently embodies innocence, kindness, and unwavering optimism. She further showcased this trait with the character Kimmy Schmidt, a former member of an underground doomsday cult, who was trying to adjust to life in New York City following her rescue. You can catch all four seasons and one interactive movie featuring her on Netflix, one of the top streaming services available.
The Blacklist
If you found James Spader’s portrayal of the enigmatic and intriguing character Robert California captivating, regardless of his quirks, then it is likely that you would find him equally compelling as Raymond “Red” Reddington – a mysterious, intimidating, and charismatic criminal mastermind/FBI informant/potential sociopath in the NBC drama, The Blacklist, which concluded its 10-season run in 2023.
The Wire
The Wire” is a fantastic drama that concluded satisfactorily and played a significant role in establishing Idris Elba as a well-known figure, thanks to his prolonged portrayal of the suave criminal Stringer Bell. If it weren’t for this series, we may not have had him play Michael’s stern (and later adversarial) boss who left quite an impact on the female characters, Charles Miner. Interestingly, Amy Ryan also appears in this show starting from Season 2.
Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness
Initially, it might seem unlikely to many followers of our beloved mockumentary that John Krasinski, recognized for his floppy Jim hairstyle and frequent amused expressions toward the camera, would one day be chosen to embody Marvel’s Mister Fantastic (also known as Reed Richards). However, Disney eventually granted their wishes in an unexpectedly brief manner when he made a cameo as a rendition of the Fantastic Four leader in the 2022 movie, “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” which explores various universes.
Six Feet Under
Once again, an HBO drama from the ’00s has offered a fresh perspective on a familiar face from “The Office.” Among the few family series that tackle death authentically, “Six Feet Under” provided Rainn Wilson with an opportunity to showcase a character who is both joyful and oddly peculiar – Arthur Martin, the mortuary intern – during Season 3. From my perspective as a fan, it was fascinating to witness this different side of him.
Hot Tub Time Machine
Among the more peculiar time-travel films that have surfaced lately, one that readily comes to mind is “Hot Tub Time Machine“, a movie where the time travelers embark on a journey through different eras by using an energy drink-powered hot tub. In this timeless comedy and its sequel, you can witness Craig Robinson as he navigates the pros and cons of time travel.
The Daily Show
Several contributors have stopped by the news desk on Comedy Central’s politically astute pop culture show, The Daily Show. Between 2002 and 2006, Ed Helms contributed to segments such as Digital Watch, We Love Showbiz, and This Week in God. What’s more, this series kick-started Steve Carell’s early career, as he was a correspondent from 1999 until 2005, and has reappeared on the show numerous times since then as a guest.
Inglourious Basterds
Previously, we’ve encountered some unexpected characters among our eccentric office employees, and fans were delighted with another such character upon the release of Quentin Tarantino’s Academy Award-nominated film “Inglourious Basterds” in 2009. Although B.J. Novak’s character Smithson “Little Man” Utivich was just a devoted soldier and clever smart-alek, the setting he functioned in was significantly more pressure-filled than anything Ryan could have coped with.
Upload
Fans of movies and TV shows often recognize characters from Scranton when they appear in various other popular productions. Yet, Creed Bratton’s appearance on Season 1 of Amazon Prime’s ‘Upload’ stood out as the shortest, funniest, and most grotesque guest role ever played by a former Scranton resident.
Doctor Who
Among television shows, none has been as consistently graced by appearances from rising stars in various roles as the long-running series “Doctor Who,” spanning over 60 years and 40 seasons. Remarkably, an entire season (the fourth modern one) along with six specials features Catherine Tate portraying Donna Noble, a companion to The Doctor.
The White Lotus
To wrap things up, let’s introduce you to “The White Lotus.” This Emmy-winning HBO series, which might be where to catch your old “Office” colleagues, delivers a wealth of unforgettable characters and performances. In Season 1, Jake Lacy, known for playing Pete “New Jim” Miller in Season 9, slipped into the role of the rather unsympathetic, pompous rich guy Shane Patton.
As you can see, The Office cast has thrived outside of the comedy that made so many of them famous!
