Yet, there are instances when an actor’s performance in a film is so off-putting that it negatively impacts their career or even destroys it altogether. One moment you might be receiving an Oscar for Best Picture, the next you could be collecting Razzies instead.

The Love Guru (Mike Myers)
Mike Myers shone brightly on Saturday Night Live and became one of the century’s funniest movie stars during the ’90s due to hit comedies such as Wayne’s World and Austin Powers series. However, the new millennium didn’t treat the comedian as favorably. Following a series of flops, Myers appeared in 2008’s The Love Guru, a film so poor, distasteful, and unamusing that it hindered his recovery, with the exception of voiceover roles.
Showgirls (Elizabeth Berkley)
After concluding her tenure on Saved by the Bell in the early ’90s, Elizabeth Berkley appeared to be rising as a star. However, her career took a significant downturn following her role as the lead in Paul Verhoeven’s erotic drama, Showgirls. Although this film about a vagabond discovering her niche in the Las Vegas showgirl world has since gained cult status, it explains why Berkley’s presence on the silver screen diminished significantly afterward.
Batman & Robin (Alicia Silverstone)
In the ’90s, Alicia Silverstone became well-known for her memorable roles in films like Clueless, The Crush, and several Aerosmith music videos. This fame made it logical for her to secure one of the main parts in Batman & Robin. However, the film turned out to be disastrous, leading to a complete overhaul of the franchise. It wasn’t until nearly a decade later with Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins that a new take on the series was introduced.
The Master Of Disguise (Dana Carvey)
In both his time on Saturday Night Live and afterwards, Dana Carvey graced films such as “This Is Spinal Tap,” “Wayne’s World.” These roles brought him significant success, but this momentum seemed to dwindle with the 2002 release of “The Master of Disguise,” a film that highlighted Carvey’s eccentric characters, yet failed to offer much else in terms of quality.
Rollerball (Chris Klein)
Back in the day, I couldn’t help but be awestruck by Chris Klein’s promising acting career after his standout roles in “Election” and “American Pie”. However, that shining moment was somewhat tarnished with the 2002 debut of “Rollerball”, a remake that fell short compared to its original, more compelling ’70s counterpart.
Norbit (Eddie Murphy)
In some of Eddie Murphy’s finest films, he excelled at portraying multiple characters. However, the movie “Norbit” from 2007, which featured Murphy as an unhappy married couple, was not on par with classics like “Coming to America” or “The Nutty Professor.” Critically panned and commercially underperforming, “Norbit” has left a lingering doubt among audiences that it might have affected Murphy’s chances of winning an Oscar for his role in “Dreamgirls.”
Superman Returns (Brandon Routh)
Brandon Routh didn’t entirely disappear from acting after his role as Superman, but it’s fair to say that his career didn’t soar to extraordinary heights following “Superman Returns” in 2006. He delivered an impressive performance as Todd Ingram in “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World,” but since then, Routh hasn’t quite matched the success he initially experienced.
Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace (Ahmed Best)
It’s not Ahmed Best’s fault Star Wars Episode I – The Phantom Menace was so bad. It’s not Ahmed Best’s fault Jar Jar Binks has become one of the most detested characters in the galaxy far, far away. And it’s not Ahmed Best’s fault his career was ruined by the 1999 prequel film.
In The Cut (Meg Ryan)
In the early 2000s, Meg Ryan was well-known for her roles in classic romantic comedies. However, she decided to challenge herself by playing a more serious part in the 2003 thriller, “In the Cut,” directed by Jane Campion. Unfortunately, this film about a woman involved in a string of murders didn’t resonate with audiences as expected.
Battlefield Earth (John Travolta)
The movie “Battlefield Earth,” characterized by its off-kilter camera angles, cheesy dialogue, and exaggerated acting, was so poorly made that it erased almost all the positive impressions John Travolta had created with his role in “Pulp Fiction” less than a decade prior.
Soul Man (C. Thomas Howell)
In the 1980s, films like E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, The Outsiders, and Red Dawn helped establish C. Thomas Howell as one of the most promising young actors in Hollywood. However, his career took a controversial turn with the release of the movie Soul Man, where he used blackface. Since then, he’s appeared in numerous movies, but many are either direct-to-video or considered lower budget productions.
Son Of The Mask (Jamie Kennedy)
An unwanted follow-up, “Son of the Mask” attempted to recapture the zest of Jim Carrey’s performance from over a decade ago by introducing Jamie Kennedy. However, even with his best attempts, Kennedy failed to deliver (perhaps the script was problematic), and he never fully recovered from this setback.
Sahara (Matthew McConaughey)
While not the poorest film in Matthew McConaughey’s career, the movie “Sahara” certainly doesn’t rank among his finest. Released long before his acclaimed performances in “Dallas Buyers Club” and “True Detective,” which earned him numerous accolades during his “McConaissance” period, this 2005 flop was one of the factors that contributed to a decline in his career.
Abduction (Taylor Lautner)
Back in the day, Taylor Lautner was a global superstar, but then he suddenly fell out of the limelight. It’s likely that his 2011 action thriller, “Abduction,” played a significant role in this decline. Although he appeared in some films after the end of the Twilight series the following year, movies like “Grown Ups 2” and “The Ridiculous 6” essentially continued the downward trend that “Abduction” had started.
John Carter (Taylor Kitsch)
John Carter was expected to be a blockbuster film, with Taylor Kitsch predicted to rise as a leading action star. However, these expectations failed to materialize following the 2012 box office debacle. In the years that followed, the former Friday Night Lights actor made appearances on television, including a role in True Detective’s second season and the eccentric Waco limited series.
The Godfather Part III (Sofia Coppola)
Prior to achieving fame as a renowned filmmaker responsible for movies such as “Lost in Translation”, “Marie Antoinette”, and “Priscilla”, Sofia Coppola initially pursued acting, featuring in numerous films produced by her father, Francis Ford Coppola. However, her acting career took a turn after the premiere of “The Godfather Part III”, where she replaced Winona Ryder; this move was met with harsh criticism from critics, effectively ending her acting career.
Josie And The Pussycats (Rachael Leigh Cook)
In the late ’90s, Rachael Leigh Cook rose to immense stardom with her portrayal of Laney Boggs in “She’s All That.” However, the 2001 adaption of “Josie and the Pussycats” proved to be a flop that left few unscathed in its wake, except for Rosario Dawson and Parker Posey.
The Postman (Kevin Costner)
In 1997, Kevin Costner felt like he was on cloud nine when he chose to both direct and act in “The Postman.” However, unlike his critically acclaimed and award-winning film, “Dances with Wolves,” this sci-fi production failed to leave a lasting impression and even put a slight dent in the actor’s success. Though he has since bounced back, it’s not hard to ponder what could have been if things had gone differently for “The Postman.”
After Earth (Jaden Smith)
In films such as “The Pursuit of Happyness” and “The Karate Kid,” Jaden Smith demonstrated potential as the next rising star in Hollywood’s second generation. However, his performance in the mediocre (at best) sci-fi thriller “After Earth,” alongside his father Will Smith, seemed to dim that promise.
Pinocchio (Roberto Benigni)
For some time, it appeared that Roberto Benigni could hardly make a mistake in his roles as an actor and director. However, this changed dramatically with his 2002 adaptation of Pinocchio, particularly the English dub, which received a dismal 0% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Since then, he’s only been involved in a limited number of films, including the 2019 adaptation of Carlo Collodi’s timeless story.
The Passion Of The Christ (Jim Caviezel)
Despite becoming widely recognized for his portrayal of Jesus in Mel Gibson’s “The Passion of the Christ,” Jim Caviezel’s acting career did not continue at the same high level as it was before the historic film. He has continued to act, but his roles have not been as prominent as those in films like “The Thin Red Line,” “The Rock,” or “G.I. Jane.” However, his performance on the series “Person of Interest” was particularly notable.
Cutthroat Island (Matthew Modine)
Prior to the phenomenal rise of the “Pirates of the Caribbean” series, which revolutionized the pirate genre in the late 90s, Matthew Modine played a leading role in the 1995 movie “Cutthroat Island”. Unfortunately for him, this film turned out to be a career setback that lasted for years. However, he eventually regained success through his work on television shows such as “Weeds” and “Stranger Things”, though it took quite some time before he achieved that level of recognition once again.
Catwoman (Halle Berry)
Halle Berry played the lead role in the movie ‘Catwoman’, which is frequently deemed one of the poorest superhero films ever made. Despite the negative reputation, she seemed to enjoy the process and even received a Razzie Award for it, a recognition given for films considered poorly made. The aftermath lingered for some time, but eventually faded away.
The Lone Ranger (Johnny Depp)
It’s surprising that The Lone Ranger, a film that arguably hindered Armie Hammer’s rise as a leading action star and slowed down Johnny Depp’s box office streak, managed to secure an Oscar nomination. Apart from Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Depp has seen limited success since then.
The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen (Sean Connery)
Sean Connery, renowned for his role as James Bond, chose to end his acting career following his part in The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. It’s unfortunate because Connery’s final performance, though not without its flaws, was less than harmonious. This less-than-stellar adaptation of the classic graphic novel is frequently overlooked more than two decades since its debut, and it’s likely for the best.
Welcome To Mooseport (Gene Hackman)
Gene Hackman, with an illustrious career in Hollywood spanning many years, saw his acting tenure conclude following the debut of “Welcome to Mooseport“. Currently living a tranquil, secluded existence, Hackman has been absent from the silver screen since 2004, when he starred alongside Ray Romano in this comedy. While not the most dismal film ever produced, it was neither a financial nor critical success, failing to benefit anyone involved.
Howard The Duck (Lea Thompson)
In the ’80s, the movie “Howard the Duck” is an example of a comic book adaptation that didn’t manage to maintain its relevance over time. This film was produced prior to Hollywood mastering the art of making successful movies within this genre. Although Robin Williams successfully switched projects and revived his career, Lea Thompson faced challenges and experienced a difficult period before eventually bouncing back.
Freddy Got Fingered (Tom Green)
The film “Freddy Got Fingered” was never intended to be a high-quality production, but after Tom Green’s outrageous big-screen comedy filled with crude humor, many viewers lost interest in the idea of him receiving substantial funding again. Those who have watched it understand why, and those who haven’t should be cautioned about its content.
Chairman Of The Board (Carrot Top)
Despite Carrot Top’s continuous performances as a prop comedian, he hasn’t landed the main role in a film since the flop of “Chairman of the Board”. The movie, which even fell short by ’90s standards, was essentially tailored for its lead actor, who seemed to have been its only intended viewer.
Boat Trip (Cuba Gooding Jr.)
In the ’90s, I was a force to be reckoned with, starring in classics like “Boyz n the Hood,” “A Few Good Men,” “Jerry Maguire,” and “As Good as It Gets.” But then came the 2000s, where movies like “Rat Race,” “Snow Dogs,” and “Boat Trip” were made. That last film was a misstep, cringe-worthy, and it seemed to take a toll on my career and reputation as an Oscar winner.
Corky Ramano (Chris Katan)
While not all Saturday Night Live (SNL) performers may achieve fame akin to Will Ferrell, Kristen Wiig, or Bill Murray, it appeared that Chris Kattan might find some success beyond Studio 8H. Nevertheless, he chose to star in “Corky Romano,” a comedy that is likely the least successful from their collective works.
The Great Dictator (Charlie Chaplin)
The film “The Great Dictator” is exceptional and may well be one of Charlie Chaplin’s finest works. It carries an enduring legacy, as it satirically mocks Adolf Hitler when the Nazi leader was brutally murdering millions of innocent people in Europe.
