In recent times, rock and roll biopics have become extremely popular, yet titles like Rocketman and A Complete Unknown aren’t the only fantastic ones available. Filmmakers have been creating outstanding ones for quite some time now. Movies such as The Doors, The Buddy Holly Story, and Sid & Nancy have long captivated audiences. Here is a selection of our favorite rock and roll biopics from the ’70s to the present day.
The Doors
As a movie enthusiast, I can’t help but sing praises for Oliver Stone’s “The Doors.” It’s undeniably one of the most mind-bending rock ‘n’ roll biopics out there, fittingly so, considering the band and its charismatic frontman at the heart of this movie. Val Kilmer breathes life into an exceptional performance as Jim Morrison, a legend and enigma who captivated audiences with his ’60s band that redefined acid rock for music lovers worldwide. Even if you’re not a fan of their music, there’s so much intrigue in this film that will leave you spellbound.

Love & Mercy
In the 2014 film “Love & Mercy,” the unusual narrative style presents both Paul Dano and John Cusack depicting Brian Wilson, the musical genius and leader of The Beach Boys. Cusack delivers a captivating performance as Wilson during his ’80s battle with mental health issues. Meanwhile, Dano shines as the creative force behind Wilson in the ’60s, working on and recording the critically acclaimed album “Pet Sounds,” often hailed as one of the best – if not the best – albums ever made.

Elvis
Austin Butler faced criticism for his portrayal of Elvis Presley in Baz Luhrmann’s film, Elvis, but it’s not fair as he delivers a superb performance in this unconventional biopic. Given how iconic and frequently imitated Elvis is, Butler had a tough task to please all of The King’s fans, yet he managed to capture the hearts of the movie audience and Academy members, resulting in an Oscar nomination.

Sid And Nancy
In a simpler way, the movie about Sid Vicious was not so much about his musical skills but rather focused on his dramatic persona and his tumultuous relationship with girlfriend Nancy Spungen. Actors Gary Oldman and Chloe Webb did an outstanding job portraying them respectively.

What’s Love Got To Do It
Tina Turner was famously known as “The Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll,” a title she truly earned. Spanning over five decades, her extraordinary career was nothing short of remarkable. It might surprise you that her former husband, far from being a paragon, is credited with essentially creating rock ‘n’ roll through his song “Rocket 88” in 1952. The captivating biopic about her life and their relationship received an Oscar nomination for Angela Bassett, another talented actor yet to secure an Academy Award.

Bohemian Rhapsody
2018’s “Bohemian Rhapsody,” a film about the iconic Freddie Mercury and Queen, might not be a textbook representation of history, but it sure is an exhilarating watch that manages to capture the essence of their story effectively. While it may not portray the true events with absolute precision, the music in this movie is nothing short of phenomenal, and the performances delivered by the entire cast are simply extraordinary.

Cadillac Records
Unlike many films on this list, Cadillac Records stands out due to its focus on Leonard Chess (played by Adrien Brody), who wasn’t a performer but the creator of Chess Records – a significant label in the early era of rock ‘n’ roll. The movie offers captivating portrayals of iconic rockers and blues singers, with Mos Def as Chuck Berry, Beyonce as Etta James, and particularly Jeffery Wright as Muddy Waters delivering exceptional performances.

La Bamba
One of the most heartbreaking tales in the early era of rock music is that of Richie Valens. At only 17 years old, Valens tragically lost his life in the same plane crash that claimed the lives of Buddy Holly and The Big Bopper. The movie “La Bamba” portrays this story and many other aspects of it, with a remarkable performance from Lou Diamond Phillips as the first Mexican-American rock star who rose to fame.

Back To Black
2024’s “Back To Black” didn’t win over critics or audiences, but that doesn’t mean justice was done. While it may not be an entirely accurate portrayal of Amy Winehouse’s tragically short life (Marisa Abela delivers a compelling performance as Winehouse), the movie is still exceptional and includes many of the singer’s most memorable songs from her career.

Ray
Ray Charles holds an immense place in American music lore, and the biographical film titled “Ray” serves as both an enlightening journey into his legend for newcomers and a heartwarming tribute for longtime admirers. Jamie Foxx delivers an outstanding performance as Charles, capturing not only his highest achievements but also his deepest struggles.

A Complete Unknown
Over a long period of time, many have attempted to depict Bob Dylan’s life on both film and in literature. However, it appears that A Complete Unknown, featuring Timothee Chalamet as the elusive icon, may have come closest to providing an accurate portrayal of his story.

The Buddy Holly Story
If you primarily know Gary Busey from recent years, you might be surprised to discover that he was once an Academy Award nominee. In the movie “The Buddy Holly Story,” Busey played the lead role as the groundbreaking rock artist, delivering a performance and portrayal that are both exceptional. Released in 1978, this film is one of the pioneering works in its genre, playing a significant role in shaping it.

Rocketman
Taron Egerton plays a stellar role in making the movie “Rocketman” exceptional. Interestingly, the narrative, while captivating, does have a slightly polished edge, as Elton John’s legendary partying exploits were indeed quite noteworthy. The film, produced with Elton John’s approval, doesn’t entirely avoid the challenging phases of his career, but it does tone down some aspects. Undeniably, the music is fantastic, and the portrayal of the relationship between John and Bernie Taupin on screen is truly enchanting.

Great Balls Of Fire!
Jerry Lee Lewis was known as one of the most contentious figures during the early era of rock and roll, often referred to as the first rebel rocker. In the film “Great Balls of Fire,” Dennis Quaid plays the role of Lewis, who faced significant backlash for marrying his 13-year-old cousin (depicted by Winona Ryder in the movie) when he was 22 years old. This event actually occurred, and the movie provides a comprehensive account of the story.

The Dirt
As a die-hard fan of rock ‘n’ roll, I can attest that Motley Crue stands out as legends due to their wildly extravagant life, and the book “The Dirt” delves deep into this madness, offering one of the most outrageous reads in the world of rock. Now, while the 2019 Netflix movie adaptation, based on that book, leans a bit towards the animated side, it’s still an absolute blast to watch!

Control
Ian Curtis, the lead vocalist of Joy Division, was one of rock music’s most tormented figures. The film depicting him and his band doesn’t shy away from showing the harsh reality of his life. Over the years, Joy Division has achieved near-legendary status following Curtis’ death, and this movie will shed light on why that is.

The Runaways
Back in the late ’70s, all-girl bands were relatively scarce, but The Runaways broke through this scene with their unique style. In the movie bearing the same name, viewers get a taste of how hip and trendy the band was. It boasts an impressive cast featuring Dakota Fanning portraying Cherie Currie and Kristen Stewart as Joan Jett. Although it didn’t garner as much acclaim as some other films on this list, music enthusiasts will find it captivating.

Beyond The Sea
Bobby Darin didn’t fit the mold of a typical rock ‘n’ roll artist; instead, he served as a link between the jazz vocalists of yesteryears and the initial rock celebrities. He occupied a unique position, straddling both worlds, and his poignant life story forms the basis for the biopic Beyond The Sea, with Kevin Spacey portraying Darin. Notably, Spacey also performed most of the singing himself in the film.

I’m Not There
The film “I’m Not There” doesn’t follow a traditional biographical format, and it doesn’t explicitly refer to Bob Dylan by name. Instead, it’s an innovative take on a biopic, with various actors portraying fictionalized versions of Dylan, including a striking performance by Cate Blanchett as one such representation of the icon.

Nowhere Boy
There are several biopics about The Beatles and their individual members, some of which have been well-received while others have not. “Nowhere Boy” falls into the latter category. This movie focuses on the adolescence of John Lennon (portrayed by Aaron Taylor-Johnson) and his family conflicts, as well as depicting the early days of The Beatles and Lennon’s first band, The Quarrymen. The narrative is heartfelt, and Taylor-Johnson effectively captures the essence of the iconic figure. Overall, it provides a fairly accurate portrayal of Lennon’s early life.

24 Hour Party People
Not every remarkable rock biography must focus on rock stars themselves. Occasionally, the unsung heroes behind the curtain have a tale as compelling. This is evident in the 2002 film “24 Hour Party People,” which delves into the early years of the “Madchester” movement in 1980s Manchester, England, giving birth to bands such as The Happy Mondays and The Stone Roses. The movie centers around Tony Wilson, the owner of The Hacienda nightclub where these bands first emerged, and the record label that gave many of them a platform.

Backbeat
The majority of Beatles movies concentrate on the group’s initial phases, and “Backbeat” follows suit. Despite being somewhat corny, this film uniquely explores the bond between John Lennon (Ian Hart) and the original bassist of the band, Stu Sutcliffe (Stephen Dorff). This friendship played a crucial role in the formation of the band before Sutcliffe departed (and eventually passed away prematurely), paving the way for the dominant Lennon/McCartney collaboration.

Last Days
Similar to several other entries on this list, Gus Van Sant’s Last Days is a dramatized portrayal of Kurt Cobain’s final days. While the lead character, portrayed by Michael Pitt, bears a striking resemblance to the iconic musician, his name is distinct, as are the names of all main characters in the narrative. In essence, it’s a rather gloomy, yet skillfully crafted film that didn’t necessarily require the veil of a “true” account for its presentation.

Jimi: All Is by My Side
Jimi: All Is by My Side, a film about legendary Jimi Hendrix, isn’t an exceptional motion picture. The main flaw lies in the fact that the producers failed to secure the rights to use Hendrix’s music, making it a biopic on a musical icon without its crucial element. However, it’s noteworthy because Andre 3000 delivers an outstanding performance, effectively embodying Hendrix’s spirit.

Jersey Boys
Reframing the statement in a more conversational style: “Jersey Boys, inspired by its hit Broadway musical namesake, focuses on Frankie Valli’s original band, The Four Seasons. If you’re a fan of musicals, this one is a must-see as it features an abundance of their chart-topping songs, and the performances are nothing short of spectacular.

CBGB
This item might seem unusual for the list since it may not appeal to everyone. However, “CBGB” recounts the tale of Hilly Kristal (Alan Rickman) and his renowned nightclub, CBGB situated on Manhattan’s Lower East Side. Music enthusiasts recognize this club as the cradle of punk rock, where bands such as The Ramones, Television, Blondie, and The Talking Heads first emerged. If you’re a fan of that music, you’ll likely enjoy the movie, despite its somewhat exaggerated feel.

Elvis
Austin Butler recently portrayed Elvis Presley, yet it was Kurt Russell who initially took on the role in the first biopic of the Rock and Roll Legend. Although the made-for-TV movie doesn’t compare to Baz Luhrmann’s recent film, Russell’s performance is exceptional and merits viewing solely for his portrayal.

Stoned
Among the most iconic rock bands ever, The Rolling Stones, are not often featured in films. One exception is “Stoned,” which delves into the sorrowful and brief life of Brian Jones, the band’s original lead guitarist. While it may not be the finest film on this list, due to a sense of incompleteness, it merits inclusion because it provides a rare cinematic glimpse into The Stones’ world.

We’re not exactly breaking new ground by combining rock and hip hop, as they’ve been closely intertwined since Run DMC collaborated with Aerosmith on “Walk This Way” in the 80s. Straight Outta Compton stands out as the top biographical movie about hip-hop, focusing on the iconic LA group N.W.A., and it features O’Shea Jackson Jr., who portrays his real-life father, Ice Cube.

Bound for Glory
Without a doubt, Woody Guthrie isn’t associated with rock and roll, yet it’s plausible to argue that his absence could mean no rock and roll. Consequently, the biographical film featuring David Carradine, portraying the life of this iconic folk singer, undeniably deserves a spot on the list.

Telstar: The Joe Meek Story
Among the lesser-known tales in rock music lore is the captivating biography of Joe Meek. Known for being an innovator ahead of his time, Meek achieved fame by penning and recruiting the band to record the hit song “Telstar.” This single marked the first number one rock record by an English group in America, a milestone set more than a year before The Beatles graced the Ed Sullivan Show. The film “Telstar: The Joe Meek Story” delves into the entire, heartbreaking saga of Meek’s life and career.

Bob Marley: One Love
Once more, we find ourselves straddling boundaries, as Bob Marley undeniably belongs to the realm of reggae musicians. However, there is no musician in all of music whose borders he blurs more – or who holds such global appeal – than Marley. The film “Bob Marley: One Love” offers a rather subdued account of his life and music, but it’s a valuable viewing experience for any music enthusiast.
