'3B Collective: Highway Hypnosis' Embraces the Artisan and Artist in Equal Breath

As a seasoned gamer with a keen eye for art and a deep appreciation for cultural narratives, I must say that the 3B Collective: Highway Hypnosis exhibit at Craft Contemporary has left me spellbound! The fusion of traditional craftsmanship with contemporary themes resonates deeply with my own journey as a global wanderer, hopping from one digital world to another.

3B Collective’s “Highway Hypnosis” exhibition, currently being showcased in Los Angeles by Contemporary, delves into the cultural narrative of the 3B Collective, a versatile group of Los Angeles natives. They creatively interpret themes of migration and assimilation using cultural symbols. A variety of murals, pottery, masks, and textiles serve as a retrospective of their work, shining light on previously untold stories about indigenous roots, labor, and commodities, making these tales the focus.

Working hand-in-hand with gifted artisans in Oaxaca, Jalisco, El Salvador, and Baja California, the pieces of “Highway Hypnosis” represent adaptable cultural strength that transcends geographical boundaries and time periods. For the project titled “Freeway Weaving”, 3B unites with Tallerocoho8, an Oaxacan textile studio founded by Beto Ruiz. Using dyes derived from local flora, the tapestry depicts a road segment stretching into a vibrant pink sunset sky. This collaborative effort paves the way for the cultivation of ancestral connections in the cityscape of Los Angeles, as the team envisions a world that challenges traditional Western notions of individual authorship.

Originally, members of the 3B Collective got together during their college years at UCLA. Since then, they’ve adorned Los Angeles with a variety of murals, exhibitions, and grand public art installations. Being both natives and newcomers to the city, these artists from 3B express their homeland pride powerfully through their skillful creations.

3B Collective: Highway Hypnosis is now on view at Craft Contemporary until September 8.
