4 Iconic Actors Return for MCU’s Avengers: Doomsday Reveal

Four notable actors portraying superheroes will step into the Marvel Cinematic Universe for the first time when Marvel Studios’ “Avengers: Endgame” premieres in 2026. In March 2025, Marvel officially announced the initial 27 cast members of the film during a five-hour live stream broadcast, hinting at only a portion of the numerous characters who will feature in the upcoming Avengers movie.

On May 1, 2026, Doomsday is scheduled to premiere, where we’ll see the Avengers, X-Men, Fantastic Four, and other notable characters join forces for an epic interdimensional fight against Robert Downey Jr.’s version of Doctor Doom. This star-studded cast will have many familiar faces from the Marvel Cinematic Universe taking center stage, with some actors returning to their iconic roles under the Marvel Studios label – a departure from their previous appearances.

4 MCU Newcomers Debuting in Avengers: Doomsday

Ian McKellen – Magneto

In most parts of the initial X-Men series, Sir Ian McKellen portrayed Erik Lehnsherr, more famously known as Magneto. He embodied the villainous character in all three films from the original trilogy, then made a brief appearance in 2013’s The Wolverine and played a substantial role in 2014’s X-Men: Days of Future Past.

As an Omega-class mutant, Magneto possesses the power to manipulate metal objects and generate magnetic fields as weapons. He is also a strong advocate for mutant rights, though he sometimes collaborates with the X-Men when it serves the common good.

In the upcoming movie “Doomsday,” Magneto’s part remains unclear, but fans anticipate he might team up with Charles Xavier (played by Stewart) as the mutants make their grand entrance in Earth-616. McKellen, who is currently the oldest cast member of “Doomsday” (as of now), boasts a rich history of over two decades working within the Marvel universe, contributing his expertise to the storyline.

Alan Cumming – Nightcrawler

I was pleasantly surprised to learn that Alan Cumming, the beloved actor, is returning to the big screen as Nightcrawler in Avengers: Doomsday. Known by his full name Kurt Wagner, Cumming originally portrayed this fan-favorite mutant in X2 back in 2003. Since then, Kodi Smit-McPhee stepped into the role for X-Men: Apocalypse (2016) and Dark Phoenix (2019). It’s going to be exciting to see Cumming reprise his role once more!

As a die-hard movie fan, I can’t help but be captivated by the enigmatic figure of Nightcrawler, with his heart as warm as the summer sun and skin as blue as the deepest ocean. What sets this hero apart is his extraordinary ability to teleport, a power that leaves me in absolute awe every time I see it on screen. He moves at breathtaking speeds across any terrain, showcasing an agility and athleticism that’s simply unparalleled. To top it off, his prehensile tail serves not just as a means of locomotion but also as an additional weapon in his arsenal when facing off against adversaries. It’s these unique traits that make Nightcrawler one of the most fascinating characters in the Marvel universe.

Although his character’s part isn’t yet clear, Cumming has hinted at a fight scene between their characters in “Avengers: Doomsday” opposite Pedro Pascal’s Reed Richards. Fans are excited to witness him engaging with numerous other Marvel superheroes, especially since this is Cumming’s debut in the Marvel universe after 23 years.

Rebecca Romijn – Mystique

In the upcoming movie “Avengers: Doomsday,” Raven Darkhölme/Mystique, portrayed by seasoned actress Rebecca Romijn, will make her second appearance as a new blue-skinned mutant. She previously had a supporting role in all three original trilogy films and made a brief reappearance in “X-Men: First Class” in 2011. This marks a span of fifteen years since her last appearance in the Marvel universe.

Known for her dual role as both a hero and a villain, Mystique’s unique ability to transform into any individual makes her a versatile character. With this talent, she can mimic and replicate anyone she desires. In combat, she proves herself to be an adept fighter and possesses an extraordinary healing factor, giving her an edge in battles against her adversaries.

As a die-hard comic book fan, I can’t help but marvel at the enigmatic character that is Mystique. Her unique bond with Professor X and Magneto sets her apart, making it plausible for her to straddle two factions in the imminent conflict against Doctor Doom. The intriguing conundrums here lie in unraveling her origin – which universe she hails from – and predicting how her interactions with her fresh supporting cast might shape her actions.

As a movie enthusiast, I must say that in the initial X-Men franchise, I stepped into the role of Mystique, the shape-shifting mutant. Fast forward to 2011, I even made a brief appearance in X-Men: First Class.

James Marsden – Cyclops

James Marsden’s Cyclops, frequently recognized as one of the X-Men’s leaders, is set to make a long-anticipated comeback to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Avengers: Doomsday. He played a central role throughout the original trilogy and made a brief appearance in X-Men: Days of Future Past. This spanned an 11-year period between his appearances, marking a significant gap for his renowned character.

Known as Cyclops, this character, Scott Summers, possesses a unique ability to emit powerful beams from his eyes – optic blasts – without needing goggles for aim or timing. He has control over when and where these blasts are released. Moreover, he can harness solar energy and has taken on leadership roles in battles alongside mutants across various media platforms.

At minimum, supporters are eagerly anticipating Marsden donning the famous blue and yellow costume that Cyclops is recognized by (much like Wolverine’s yellow suit from Deadpool & Wolverine). Furthermore, it’s expected that he will take a leading role among the X-Men in Doomsday, which could pave the way for even more thrilling storylines ahead.
