As a connoisseur of art, I find myself in awe of cinema’s youthful vigor, born barely a century ago, while literature boasts an ancient lineage spanning millennia. The vast ocean of narratives that exists, many with devoted fan bases, has been a treasure trove for film studios, who have secured the rights to numerous literary works. Among their preferred genres for adaptation is the crime novel. Despite intricate plots and characters, these films often prove more economical in production, boasting lower budgets compared to genre heavyweights like sci-fi or action blockbusters.
Crime dramas brim with intrigue and enigma, featuring unforeseen plot twists and reversals. They can be a traditional whodunit murder mystery or an exhilarating chase between predator and prey. Regardless of the specific scenario (and we emphasize this, as these movies often revolve around a detective and investigation), crime films usually keep audiences at the edge of their seats, eager to uncover more secrets. Here are five upcoming adaptations of crime novels, both in film and television, that you should keep an eye on.

‘Long Bright River’
March 13, 2025
As a movie enthusiast, let me share with you that “Long Bright River” is a captivating limited series, adapted from Liz Moore’s novel of the same name. The story unfolds in the gritty streets of Philadelphia, where I find myself immersed as a police officer navigating a crime-plagued neighborhood. Compelled by personal tragedy, I take it upon myself to unravel the mystery surrounding the murder of three women and the disappearance of my drug-addicted sister – a journey that tests my resolve and challenges the boundaries of family loyalty.
This story is said to be just as much a narrative about sisterhood as it is a thrilling crime drama. Amanda Seyfried, praised for her acting skills in the TV series, “The Dropout,” will portray the role of the police officer. On the other hand, Ashleigh Cummings has been cast as her character’s sister. If this sounds intriguing to you, mark your calendars! This show is set to debut on Peacock on March 13, 2025.

‘The Stolen Girl’
April 16, 2025
A British television series titled “The Kidnapped Child” follows a widespread search across Europe after a young girl is abducted during a play date. The story is based on the novel “Playdate” by Alex Dahl, who shares no familial connection (apparently) with the renowned Norwegian children’s author, Roald Dahl.
In an unexpected twist, this crime drama, scheduled for release on Disney+ on April 16, 2025, features a predominantly British cast headed by Holliday Grainger. You might recognize her from Bong Joon-ho’s recent sci-fi comedy, “Mickey 17.” Surprisingly, this gripping story revolves around a child’s kidnapping.

‘Crime 101’
TBA 2025
Crime 101″ refers to an upcoming film adaptation from Don Winslow’s novella of the same name. This renowned crime author’s work will be brought to life on the big screen, telling the story of a detective pursuing a skilled jewel thief who operates under a set of principles he calls “Crime 101,” a strict rulebook for executing the ultimate heist.
The highly anticipated movie titled “Crime 101” boasts a stellar cast, featuring the reunion of Marvel Cinematic Universe co-stars Chris Hemsworth and Mark Ruffalo. Joining them are up-and-coming talent Barry Keoghan and seasoned actress Halle Berry. In 2023, Amazon secured the rights to “Crime 101” following a fierce bidding war. While an official release date hasn’t been announced yet, it is expected that the film will hit screens later this year.

‘Thursday Murder Club’
TBA 2025
I found myself utterly captivated by “The Thursday Murder Club” by Richard Osman, which was an unprecedented bestseller in the UK. This phenomenal book has since grown into a beloved series, with a forthcoming fifth installment slated for 2025. Excitingly, Netflix is set to transform the original novel into a delightful blend of crime and comedy – a classic crime dramedy! As a supporter, I eagerly anticipate following the journey of this group of sharp-witted elderly sleuths as they delve into a murder mystery.
The movie boasts an experienced group of actors like Helen Mirren, Pierce Brosnan, and Ben Kingsley in its lineup. Notably, it will be helmed by renowned director Chris Columbus, who previously directed the initial two “Home Alone” and “Harry Potter” films. Given its star-studded cast, veteran director, and streaming on Netflix – a giant in the industry – this film is bound to spark curiosity among older viewers and possibly younger ones as well.

‘Kill Your Darlings’
Likely 2026
Kill Your Darlings” – A New Crime Drama Coming Soon
Contrary to the 2013 movie with the same title, this upcoming production is a distinct crime drama that hasn’t hit the screens yet. Interestingly, it’s based on a book that has not been published as of now. The novel “Kill Your Darlings” by Peter Swanson is slated for release on June 10, 2025. Amazon MGM Studios and United Artists have already secured the rights to adapt this intriguing story, with work well underway. Notably, Julia Roberts will not only co-produce but also star in the film. Known for his work on “Ad Astra” in 2019, James Gray has been appointed as the director of this promising project.
I can’t help but wonder why there’s such an exciting anticipation surrounding this upcoming book. It seems that its captivating and unusual concept might be the reason. This isn’t your typical murder mystery; instead, it unfolds backwards, revealing a marriage spanning twenty-five years to expose the chilling secret hidden within. The narrative structure somewhat echoes that of Memento, although it remains unclear how its story will play out on the big screen. As for when we’ll be able to catch Kill Your Darlings in theaters, speculation points towards a late 2025 release. However, it appears more plausible that we’ll get to see it in 2026.
